The Ultimate Guide to All Things Ultra Space: Shiny Hunting in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon~☆

Yes, you read that right. You can finally put those adrenaline orbs to rest. Thanks to a wicked discovery from Reddit we have confirmed that Ultra Space has blessed our timeline with infinite shinies. Thank you #BasedHelix. Here’s how it works:

Before you start please note that this section is only available post game. To optimize efficiency it is recommended you bring a utility team designed to catch Pokemon. Examples include a False Swiper/Spore/Hypnosis Pokemon as well as a Synchroniser for a guaranteed nature of your choice.

- Step One. Disable motion controls

The game allows you two methods of navigating Ultra Space: movement through motion controls where you tilt the DS up, down, left, and right; or movement through the circle pad. Circle pad gives you the most control and accuracy. To disable motion control you need to visit the 2nd floor of the Game Freak office on Akala Island (bottom center of the map) and speak to the scientist in the corner. 

He will show you a quick guide on how to navigate Ultra Space and then ask which method you prefer- select Circle Pad to confirm your choice.

- Step Two. Use Charizard Glide to fly to The Altar of the Sunne (Ultra Sun)/ Altar of the Moone (Ultra Moon) on the top of Poni Island.

Once there you will see a wormhole appear. Touch the wormhole and select “Return to the Ultra Wormhole.” From there the cutscene will play of you riding Solgaleo/Lunaala through the vast world beyoooond the beyooond.

☆ Guide to Recognizing Wormholes ☆

In this section we will break down the different types of wormholes encountered within Ultra Space and what to expect from each one.

There are 4 types of wormholes: normal, one ring shiny, double ring shiny, and double ring shiny with aura. Each wormhole has something different to offer so here’s a good idea of what you can expect to happen when you enter one.

▪ Normal wormholes, i.e. wormholes without a ring, hold the least chance to encounter shiny Pokemon. They come in 5 different colors and lead to different areas:

- Red wormholes lead to cliffs where flying Pokemon can be encountered.

- Blue wormholes lead to lakes where water Pokemon can be encountered.

- Green wormholes lead to flat caves were certain types can be encountered.

- Yellow wormholes lead to deeper caves where certain types can be encountered.

- White wormholes will always lead to an Ultra Beast. While other normal wormholes may not contain a shiny Pokemon, white wormholes can always be used to Soft Reset for a shiny Ultra Beast.

▪ One ring shiny wormholes have an increased chance for a shiny Pokemon to appear. However, the farther you travel in Ultra Space, the greater chance you have of a shiny Pokemon appearing within these wormholes. The exact odds are unknown at this moment.

▪ Double ring shiny wormholes also have an increased chance for shinies and also have a chance for a Legendary Pokemon to appear. This does not necessarily mean the Legendary Pokemon will be shiny on your first encounter, but you can use the area to Soft Reset for its shiny form to appear.

▪ Double ring shiny with an aura emanating from it is 100% guaranteed to grant you a Legendary encounter. The Legend you can expect to appear will depend on the wormhole’s color. As stated above, you can Soft Reset for a shiny Legend within these wormholes.

☆ How to Soft Reset for a Shiny Legend/ UB☆

- Enter the wormhole

- Immediately save the game

- Run to the encounter spot

- If the Legendary/UB does not appear as a shiny, press “L”, “R” + “Start” at the same time. This will cause the game to restart itself without using the Home menu, ergo “Soft Reset”

- Repeat as many times needed until the shiny appears

☆What to Do When You’ve Encountered A Wild Shiny☆

- Wild shinies found in Ultra Space are set shinies. (PLEASE NOTE: This does NOT include Legendary and UB encounters!)

- This means that if you save before encountering and then restart the game, the Pokemon waiting will still be shiny. This will only change if you defeat/faint the Pokemon or leave the area.

- This also means that you can Soft Reset for desired traits such as nature, gender, and IV’s.

- Utilize your utility Pokemon for best results.

Some things I love about Wonder Woman (2017)

Even though Diana did fall in love with the first man she met, her and Steve’s relationship does come across as sincere and rather well-developed. It started with Diana saving Steve’s life and then Steve helping defend Themyscria from the Germans ensuring that there is not a “I’m in debt to you” element present, and Diana having extensive knowledge about sex helps prevent a “Born Sexy Yesterday” trope. Also, although it is a rather quick romance, it is based on mutually learning about each others’ worlds, personal beliefs, and personalities. Plus Diana never had to sacrifice her opinions or her strength while interacting with him, and it was Steve who had to change by learning to trust Diana as a fellow fighter in the war. 

There was never a single comment about Beverly’s (Steve’s secretary) appearance in comparison to Diana’s, and she was never used as target of a joke. She also scolded Steve for thinking that making Diana wear glasses would make her less attractive. She even contributed to Steve’s and Diana’s mission by locating their position in relation to the German High Command.  

Diana being the only one able to translate Dr. Poison’s notebook becuase she knows like a hundred languages and then a few minutes later she’s yelling at the British General for treating soldiers like disposable pawns and out-right calling him a coward for sitting at his desk instead of fighting alongside his soldiers.  

Charlie’s PTSD not being demonized or treated like a weakness and instead everyone helps him cope and Diana making sure he feels useful outside of his sharpshooting.

Diana, a half God, fighting Ares the God of War while simultaneously trying to decide whether humans are inherently selfish and cruel and will only lead to their own self-destruction or inherently good and coming to the conclusion that it isn’t so clear-cut and that humans have both good and evil inside them and that she will believe in the love they can have for each other instead of the hate they can have for each other.

I feel like one of the most ironically sexist things that happened to women heroes for so long was that they had universal storytelling taken away from them. So, male superheroes could have Lois Lane. They can have love, they can have vulnerability, they can have complexity. But women superheroes or strong women characters had to be, ‘I don’t need anyone, I’m the toughest person in the world.’ That’s not fair to anybody. No human being is an island like that.

Why Wonder Woman was so Important to Me

I had the opportunity to see Wonder Woman recently, and I was left awestruck.  Wonder Woman is such a timeless character, and I feel this story and the way the film was made really captured the heart of the original character.  With DC’s track record, it had a high chance of being lazy and bad.  But it wasn’t.  It was original. Refreshing. I cried a lot, and here’s why.

1. Women Are Strong 

I’m not one to loudly complain about the misrepresentation of women in media (though we often are).  We’ve had some really awesome and strong female characters over the past couple years.  But somehow, Wonder Woman took this in a completely new direction.  Watching the Amazons fight the invaders on the beach nearly brought me to tears.  It was so special for me to see women take on roles we rarely see them in.  They were the fighters, the protectors, the providers.  There are many women out in the world right now who are fighting their own battles, much like the Amazons.  They’re providing for their families or serving their countries through the military.  It was a pleasant reminder that while men and women have differences, they are equally strong and skilled.

(Also yay for a female director!)

2. Actions Speak Louder

Many times, Wonder Woman is questioned.  She’s scoffed at for being a women (which would have been very common during that time).  She’s underestimated.  But what’s so amazing here is that she never has to prove herself to the men.  It would’ve been so easy for the movie to fall into that common trope.  She never argues with a man and she focuses her attention on others instead of herself.  She wants to kill Ares and stop the war. And in the end, her actions speak louder then her words ever could.  What I took from this is to rise to action.  Stop talking and start doing.  Ignore what others say, because you know what you can do.  Hold your head high and rise above.

3. Mutual Respect Brings the Most Success

As I said before, it would have been easy for the film to fall into certain tropes.  A trope we often see nowadays is a woman proving that she (or all women) are better then men.  That’s never a point of conflict in this film.  Her love interest, Steve, fights as her equal.  He isn’t clumsy or weak to make Wonder Woman look stronger.  He believes in her and helps her to the best of his ability. When they become interested in each other romantically, they both hold their own.  They love each other but are not dependent on one another.  We see the rest of the men in their gang react the same way later on.  They all eventually come to love and respect Diana.  It’s a great reminder that feminism is about collaboration and equality, not one gender being better then the other.  We each have something to bring to the table and our differences are what makes us stronger. 

4. It’s Okay to not be Okay

There’s a really interesting character in Wonder Woman’s gang named Charlie.  He’s supposed to be the world’s top shooter, but time and time again he fails.  He seen some things that have damaged him pretty heavily.  What’s really interesting about this character is that we never see this issue resolved.  He doesn’t have his big “hero moment” where he is suddenly able to shoot and save the day.  This is so much like real life.  We’ve all been hurt, and it’s ok to be damaged.  You have nothing to prove, but your great efforts will help everything to turn out right in the end.  At one point, Charlie even says to Diana “You don’t need me, you’re better of without me.” To this she replies “No, Charlie, if you’re not here, who will sing?” This implies that Charlie is still a valued member of the group, despite his shortcomings.  His friends are able to recognize his other strengths when he cannot.  

5. There is Much Darkness in the World, But Love Will Save the Day

Not much to say here, as Diana said it all in her own monologue:

“I used to want to save the world, to end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learnt that inside every one of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves - something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know… that only love can truly save the world. So now I stay, I fight, and I give - for the world I know can be. This is my mission now, for ever.”

Often times love is portrayed as a great weakness. But it isn’t.  To love is to truly see beauty in the world.  To love is to be brave and strong.  Love is the greatest power of all.  

Additional Notes:

We must learn to forgive.  Diana had the opportunity to kill the chemist responsible for Steve’s death.  And she chose not too, instead focusing on the larger problem at hand and in turn leaving the past in the past.

There were not gratuitous or sexualized shots of the women in the film.  The framing was based around the action.  The women were all beautiful, but the film relied on it’s story and the strength of it’s lead rather then her beauty. 

There will always be hardship. There isn’t always one bad guy to fight.  We all will have to continue to fight our demons and endure through our trials.  But it’s the light and the love, those precious moments, that we fight for.

Thanks Wonder Woman.  You inspired me, and I’m so grateful.  I don’t think I’ve seen a superhero movie with more heart.  There will be many days ahead where I think “What would Wonder Woman do?”
