Welcome!

I’m Madeleine Huie (or “Maddie” is fine), a current Computer Animation student at Ringling College of Art and Design with an interest in storyboarding and traditional animation. I love creating humorous and heartfelt stories in magical settings, featuring characters from mermaids to ghosts to swords-in-the-stone.

Four quick illustrations I did to pitch story prompts to my class:

A proper flower boy must seek the aid of a humble trash ferrywoman to take him down the river to the beautiful pond where he belongs.

A rebellious jukebox son and traditional record player father engage in a dance battle to prove once and for all which is the superior dance style: breakdancing or swing.

A shy cactus boy has to survive a dance with his crush without accidentally stabbing her in the process.

Two competitive sisters engage in Rock, Paper, Scissors, Anything, their childhood game which summons fighters to battle for their honor, to win the right to ride shotgun.

Meet Nicole, a fantasy heroine who slayed the dragon, won the day, married the princess... and then found herself completely unequipped to deal with the mundane day-to-day responsibilities of actually running a kingdom. This character was designed for an animation assignment focusing on lipsync. I had a ton of fun pushing her expressions to really emphasize her stress.

This illustration was inspired by three randomly generated words: nuclear, archer, and ocular. With those guidelines, an apocalyptic, sci-fi style aesthetic called to me. I emulated 50s horror movie posters to emphasize the horror of the monster the hero is facing.

These value illustrations came from my visual development class. The design in the middle was inspired by 1920s swimwear, while the two on the ends were designed from scribbles we made in Photoshop and photos of nature we took! I enjoyed expanding my usual subject matter and tackling something new.

Ellery recounts his beginnings as an investigative assistant. Building on Ellery’s story through a lip sync was an interesting challenge, but it was nice to not have to let go of the character just yet. My professor said that the depiction of Ellery’s nerdiness reflected that I must be a giant dork, which I have to admit is probably accurate. December 2020

Ellery Reyes faces an exciting issue when he identifies a suspect on his first stakeout as an investigative assistant. There were a bunch of gags related to classic detective/spy things that I thought up for this assignment, but I’m happy with what I decided to go with. Disguises are a really fun visual. Meet Ellery Reyes, an investigate assistant who LOVES everything about classic detective work, from the stakeouts to the costumes. His fanboy nature often reaches the point where he takes it too far... I share that love of mysteries with him, which is why I was super excited to be able to animate a detective character for class! September 2020

A siren and sea serpent fight over the perfect snack -- the corpse of a pirate-- using the special abilities of their creature types. This project, a wild west-inspired showdown, was super fun to work on and develop. My favorite to draw was definitely the siren, but I might be biased because I voiced her as well. December 2020

The story of a salamander who obsesses over the undead finding a supernatural frog one spooky night. We were asked to come up with a story where somebody threw something at an instrument-playing frog, and I seized the opportunity to listen to violin and develop a creepy aesthetic. October 2020

The shortened version of Calibourne’s story, told through computer animation. This was my first time building my own character, from the models to the textures to the rigs! Definitely confusing, but enlightening nonetheless. December 2020

It was difficult to think of a character with no arms, but thankfully inspiration came to me in the form of Arthurian legend. Calibourne is a walking sword in the stone who’s grown tired of waiting for a true king to arrive. Therefore, he’s set out to find his champion himself, no matter what obstacles stand in his way. November 2020

The bouncing ball assignment, but in computer animation! Even a simple animation assignment like this in Maya was fascinating to learn about, and fun to make. October 2020

This is the resulting animation of my Bessera character design. We were asked to animate a turn, a take, and a jump, but I had fun breathing a little life into the background as well. April 2020

A character sheet for my first animated character, Bessera the Badger. After being assigned an animal, we had to come up with a character and a fitting design, and I decided to go cute. Her design is partially inspired by Felix the Cat, considering that I was learning about him at the time. March 2020
