Historical Gas Stations (in Malmö)

Purpose of this sideblog is to use pictures, from the Malmö City archives, of gas stations and to see if they are still there or not.

Mack (Västanväg/Högerudsgatan, Limhamn)

Here is a Mack gas station in 1974. Mack Petroleum was the first Swedish company in 1972 to only offer automated pay-at-the-pump facilities, which meant that they could charge less than their competitors! A few years later, they were owned by Swedish BP and other competitors opened similiar automated facilities. In 1989 BP sold all 207 Mack stations to UNO-X which in turn rebranded them.

Since at least 2009 this has been a trailer rental business. The old structure from the gas station is still standing, it's unknown when it ceased to be one.

Uno-X (Ola Hanssonsgatan, Malmö)

This gas station was combined with the mechnic’s workshop of Egon Hanevik. Originally built in 1954 as a BP gas station (unfortunately I could not find any images from that era), it was in february 1996 a Uno-X gas station.

In 2009 the gas station is shut down and the pumps are long gone. However the company of Hanevik Service and Garage seems to be still around, not using the tiny kiosk though but rather the underground garage (entrance out of image).

Today the former gas station and mechanic’s workshop is completly closed down and not in use. The kiosk stands, empty and the company of Hanevik Service and Garage is long gone.

Esso (Holmgatan/Davidshallsgatan, Malmö)

An Esso station that probably opened in the 1940s as the building was erected. This image was taken after 1971 as the neighboring pub Sir Toby’s is there, but before the end of the 1970s.

Today the gas station is gone, it was closed down somewhere in the late 1970s or early 1980s and Sir Toby’s took over the area, building it into the already established pub.

Esso/BP (Mariedalsvägen/Kramersvägen, Malmö)

Built in 1954, this cool-looking gas station was originally an Esso gas station. It later became an IC gas station.

By 1974 however it was a BP gas station, which it probably was up until 1993 at most.

In 2009 the gas pumps are long gone, however the building itself is still in use as a car service place.

Today the gas station is still around, still a car service place. In 2010 it became the first gas station in the city to become a historical landmark, thus being protected due to its unique architectural design.

Statoil (Djäknegatan/Rundelsgatan, Malmö)

To the right you can see a sign for a Statoil gas station. It was situated in the parking garage of the building. Date is unknown, but it’s likely it’s 1989. It’s possible that before 1985 this was an Esso gas station.

The gas station survived until 2011.

Today the space where the gas station store used to be is empty. For a while a smaller corner store was located there, but it is now gone. The parking garage is still in use.

Gulf (Södra Förstadsgatan, Malmö)

A classic Gulf station in a picture dated 17th of March, 1967. It’s unknown for how long it has stood here and when it was closed down, however the whole area was razed around 1970, so probably not long after this picture was taken.

Something that is funny is that the billboards behind/above is actually advertising a competiting gas station company.

Here is the area today. Most of the block were the gas station was located was torn down around 1970. The red area marks were it used to be. The green-marked buildings can be seen in the above picture for comparison.

OK (Rudbecksgatan, Limhamn)

Here on the left you can see an OK gas station. The picture is probably taken at some point during the 1980s. Maybe 1989.

In 2009 the gas station is a Preem station with a store which it has been since 1996, when Preem came on the market.

At some point the store closed down and the building is no longer tied to the gas station itself and houses instead a paint store.

BP (Linnégatan, Limhamn)

Here is a BP gas station. You can see the line 4 for the now defunct streetcar line. The photo is undated but the year is at latest 1973 since that was the year line 4 was shut down.

In 2009 this gas station is an automatic Hydro gas station. It’s been completly remodeled and the surrounding buildings tied to the old BP station are now gone.

However Hydro sold all their stations to St1 in 2009 and today it’s an automatic St1 station.

Uno-X (Klågerupsvägen, Malmö)

A radio/tv store that was neighbor to a car workshop/dealership and a Uno-X gas station. It is possible they were run by the same person. The picture is undated but it’s earliest 1959 when the Uno-X brand was introduced in Sweden, looking at the car it’s probably 1960-1970s.

Today both the radio/tv store and the car dealshiper still stands, although looking a bit different. The Uno-X gas station is since long gone, probably removed when the street was remodeled.

Shell (Limhamnsvägen, Limhamn)

A Shell gas station in 1977 out in the urban area of Limhamn in Malmö. It got a building tied to it was well, a kiosk, garage and probably car wash.

In 2009 the gas station recently closed down.

Today the lot is empty and is instead a dog daycare. The industries you can see in the back of the original picture are long gone and have instead been gentrified into apartments.

Shell (Drottninggatan/Västra Kanalgatan, Malmö)

On these four pictures, all taken in 1968 you can see a Shell gas station beside a large brick building. The large brick building belonged at the time to the Swedish Telephone Agency (Televerket) and was until 2020 office for Massive Entertainment Ubisoft. Not sure when the gas station or the apartment building it’s part of was built, but probably 1940s and as early as 1939 when Shell came to Sweden.

Today the building is a nail salon. It’s also been various other businesses, such as a photo store. It’s unsure when the gas station closed down but it was at some time after 1974 but before 2002.

BP (Smedjegatan/Södra Förstadsgatan, Malmö)

A BP station in 1953. It’s probably been around for a while.

Today the lot is a grocery store and residental building. The building to the right with the windowed balconies is still there.

Gulf (Norregatan/Stora Kvarngatan, Malmö)

A classic Gulf station in an undated pictures but it is 1961/1962 at earliest. The Gulf station is still there in 1968. It’s unknown for how long it has stood here and when it was closed down, however the whole area was razed between 1968 and 1972, so probably not long after this picture was taken.

Same gas station, this is probably mid or late 1960s around the time the buildings are about to be torn down.

The current building was built here between 1988 and 1991.

Esso (Möllevångsgatan-Nikolaigatan, Malmö)

Another Esso gas station built into a newly built apartment building. Picture is taken after 1939, but probably during the 1940s.

Today the area of the gas station has been built into an office. It’s unclear when this was done and when the gas station ceased to exist. It’s also unknown if the gas station survived the change to Statoil in 1985 but it’s unlikely.

Esso (Sallerupsvägen, Malmö)

A newly built Esso station, probably built as part of these new apartments. It’s probably around 1939/1940.

In 2009 the lot looks like this. You see that there’s been a gas station here before. This structure is a remnant of an older Statoil station (compare with here and here), so we can say for sure that it survived the 1985 change from Esso to Statoil.

Today there is no gas station here, but a car care center. Compared to how it looked in 2009, there’s now been some additions on the structure itself. It’s unsure when the gas station closed down but it was definitely before 2009.

Texaco (Bergsgatan, Malmö)

A tiny Texaco station, 1930s. Unsure for long it was there and if it was ever rebranded CalTex in 1947.

Today the building still stands, but is a fruit and vegetable store. Judging by how it looks, I doubt it has been a gas station for many years.

BP/Shell (Trelleborgsvägen, Malmö)

Picture is undated but a guess is 1940s. Here is a BP station and it tells us that this picture was taken at least before 1947, as it was then BP switched over to their more known classical green and yellow logo. In the background you can see the Esso station from an earlier post. However this BP station did not live for long...

A picture dated March 1956 shows that in its place we now have a completly different building with a Shell logo on it. The reason why is probably because while the BP gas station was located on the corner lot, the Shell station is not. In 1953, the apartment building seen below was built and with it, probably, the Shell station. The BP station was probably torn down as result of the construction.

Today there’s no trace of the Shell building that can be seen above. However the old garages are still there, now as a tire shop. It’s unknown when the Shell station did close down, but it was before 2002.
