(Belated!) Malora Week: Day 5 - Reincarnation
Happy very belated Malora Week! I kicked my exams in the ass and I’ve begun to catch up on all the lovely malora-ness I missed out on. I’m writing out of order, but I doubt it matters now because I’m so late. So, here’s the first one that I got inspiration for: the Day 5 prompt.
This is the perfect place I thought to expand the little blip of dialogue between Mal and Aurora in The Frozen Star (FF.net & AO3) concerning the fae belief of life after death.
Hopefully this’ll hold everyone over while I catch up with all the other prompts. Have fun reading, beasties!
Even though Maleficent was immortal, Aurora saw a death in her eyes.
It rested there, behind the swirling gold and green. It was a creeping, invasive thought, a shadow of worry, a lingering, darker creature. It first started as a small thing, a flash across glowing irises, a fleeting whisper that exposed itself for only a moment, and then hid behind something intangible.
It was a seed, carried by the wind of Maleficent’s thoughts before finally settling in fertile soil. The soil was Maleficent’s heart. Aurora once heard a saying among humans that the eyes were the windows to the soul. When Aurora looked into the faery’s eyes, she saw a brambly, thorny thing taking root, something black and twisted and unwelcome.
There were some nights in the tree that Aurora felt Maleficent hold on to her tight, tighter than she had ever been held, as if she were to let go, Aurora would be lost forever. She would place a reassuring hand over the faery’s, then, hoping that in due time Maleficent would open up and tell Aurora what was bothering her, assisted by all the tentative prodding Aurora gave the matter.
Decades passed, and the day never came.
