I have this headcannon, for no reason, about Harry and Ginny’s relationship after the war and into their adult life:
I picture that, maybe at 21-22 years old, Ginny has to leave for 3-4 months to do some training or some other Quidditch related thing. During this time Harry misses her immensely and it’s one of the hardest periods of his adult life. Ginny also misses him, and starts realizing how much she wants him in her life. It isn’t a dark depressive period in their life, just something that changes their relationship and pushes it forward.
In this time apart (physically) I imagine that both of them mature separately and very profoundly. Even if Harry had known how much she meant to him since before the war, I believe it’s in this time that he realizes he’s ready to actually start a life with her and potentially start a family. I think he might’ve been ready for marriage since before Ginny left for the trip, and bought the ring. Although, the opportunity of that training came up and Ginny decided to go. She had been playing with the Harpies for maybe 3 years and this was another step in her career. In short, Harry got to the marriage point before her, she still needed some time.
Time. Not to decide if she actually loved him, because that had already been a certainty for her since he left her to go hunting horcruxes. Time not just to reach some personal goal. Just time she didn’t know she needed. During that period I imagine her being so so happy training, but always having him on her mind. Getting to her room at night and getting so giddy writing letters to him. Laughing and blushing reading his. Feeling such ease between them. With all the distance between them, without seeing him for maybe 6 weeks straight, and yet she didn’t feel insecure at their future. She didn’t feel any tension in his letters. All the trust she somehow felt, she knew he felt too.
They had always understood each other, they got and trusted each other, but then the foundation of the relationship became rock solid. And not only that, they felt somehow something was becoming larger. Their love for each other deepening, and at the same time so simple and natural.
After the war rekindling their relationship, I imagine, must have been hard and painful. So much trauma in both of them. So many questions that needed to be answered, not only about each other but about life, death, the war, the meaning of it all…
Harry free from his doom, free to now picture a future, to realize he wasn’t just his mission. To realize he wasn’t just “the chosen one”, nor “the boy who lived (again)”, he could be Harry. And that’s someone he had to figure out and learn about…
Ginny now dealing with the heavy pain of having lost a brother. Of dealing with the fear of her family breaking. Wondering how everything could continue. Also, with so many memories from all year and keeping the DA together and fighting. Overcoming many many obstacles, one after the other…
Such difficult and complex circumstances after the war. And to face each other and feel so much love and respect for the other, but being so lost individually to just get back to normality. They need time. They get together but in their own terms. Figuring little things out. Helping each other.
Even if Harry thinks of Ginny as his first priority and Ginny thinks of him as the love of her life. I don’t think they are ready to do something about that right after the war. That’s why time needs to go by, to solidify that love. I know that canonically they get married very very young (at 21-22 Harry and 20-21 Ginny?). I, too, think they tie the knot before they’re 25. Although, I reckon there has to be transformation, a “click” in both of them, that makes them both dead set on the other. And this comes in this time Ginny is apart. More so, when she comes back.
I do not mean that they weren’t sure about each other! I mean that they get from figuring out how to live, what to expect from life after the war, who they are; to just knowing that what they want is to have a family together and be happy. To “settle down” as some say.
In short words:
- after the war and until they are 21-22 (4/5 years): a lot of figuring everything out. Starting their careers. Harry buying a flat and living maybe with Ron or alone. Ginny living with her parents and dealing with Fred’s death and the meaning and consequences it has on the family. (Many many more things, I know I’m not getting to the thick of it)
- 22: Ginny goes away for a few months. Something starts to click to her. What she wants in life. Who she is as a person, as a woman… And it’s clearer to Harry that it’s her who she wants to spend all his life with.
- Ginny comes back. Everything settles. Something just switches and they have such trust, such respect, and some harmony between them that they get engaged and married one year (or less, it doesn’t matter how much time it actually was) after.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I believe that before they get married and have their children I imagine Harry and Ginny have to go through a lot and then get set on each other. Not only do they need to figure out their respective trauma and questions, but also have to build a solid, strong foundation. Then, also, some moment of acknowledgement and realization and then they can devote themselves to each other.
I should also add that I imagine this to be specially hard for Harry because this would be the first time he stays and she leaves. Him, being and auror and going on missions, leaving Ginny. Her having to be strong and to trust he would come back. (By the way, I think this should be more explored, how much strength it takes to wait, to trust the other will come back..). And in this case it’s Ginny leaving, and him having to stay. I think that would definitely have a lot to do with him getting so ready to be with her.
Again this is only something I randomly imagine. No hate. No intention of discouraging anyone’s own opinions and thoughts. Also, this is all about a fictional world, so… We’re very free to imagine different things.
Hope you liked it!
