every year there are apparently a bunch of people who are vehemently against cishets being within 20 feet of a pride parade, and these people are apparently numerous and influential enough that their viewpoint needs to be addressed and opposed constantly
personally I have never encountered one of these people. but from the plethora of defiant responses to them that one reads each June, surely they must exist
#and tumblr users would never make up a guy to get mad at. that just doesnt happen
being a kid and hearing adults say stuff like "woah 2011 was 4 years ago haha" didn't really convey the fucking horror of a youtube video crossing my recommended labelled "9 years ago" and it's from 2017. that's not true. 9 years ago is 2010 or something. don't lie.
when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist
anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
if it’s called house of leaves why don’t they just “leave” the “house?” are they stupid? ¹
¹ “Is He Stupid? / Is She Smart? / Are They Stupid?” Know Your Meme, March 16, 2023. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/is-he-stupid-is-she-smart-are-they-stupid. The phrasal template "Is he stupid?" was popularized in February 2023, when reddit.com user "Encajado" posted an image to the subreddit r/BatmanArkham with the caption "Why doesn't Batman just call the Justice League for help? Is he stupid?"
there should be coming of age stories for people turning 30
Sorry to be Mr woke-a-tron 3000 and i doubt im the only person to have this grievance but it is so frustrating how every slightly progressive suggestion to make the world less shitty aside from voting (boycotting, recycling, not participating in fast fashion, not overconsuming, hell even slightly reducing meat intake, etc.) gets shut down as a personality attack against individual consumers because you cant blame individuals for broader societal issues. "If you ask me to stop littering youre basically saying im as bad as land fills which isnt fair its my coping mechanism." And so on is a common type of sentiment you see in response to even the nicest posts about about mildly shifting consumer habits
But when it comes to voting suddenly its a group project and we need to do our part for the greater good and if elections dont go the preferred route then its personally you and your political affiliates faults it went wrong and all of thats before you get to the many logistical barriers that make voting a challenge but those are just excuses
Like what is the logic of "collective action doesnt work and won't change anything. Except for this one specific thing"
“but what if you abort the baby who’ll cure cancer?!” sir the baby who will cure cancer is an organic chemistry major who works at a Home Depot because you use AI to go through your resumes
"I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." - Stephen Jay Gould, The Panda's Thumb: More Reflections in Natural History
the Good Place really nailed it when they said that the point of morality is just to try. To try and be better today than you were yesterday.
these days you can call the US an empire and nobody will bat an eye, but the way some people get worked up when you start talking about acts of US imperialism. empire doesn't just mean powerful lmao, it means you're exploiting foreign populations
my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
i understand that it's unreasonable to expect a band on world tour to play in every country in the world but i do think they should only be allowed to call it a world tour if they play in every continent. we need to make it embarrassing to say world tour and then not even step foot in africa
this is how new yorkers @ mamdani
today we're going on a journey. we will need to bring certain items with us. the sage's instructions are clear: gather your identity papers, your coin, and your key of power to pilot the electric carriage to the supply depot and purchase pickles
project hail mary is a touching and poignant film that leaves you asking questions about humanity like, "wow what if all mainstream media was genuinely good" and "what if book adaptions actually gave a shit about the book in question" and "what if studios hired actors that could actually act, and then let them get a lil wacky with it"
