As far as some people are concerned, a family is supposed to operate like a gang. No matter what else, the highest virtue is being loyal to the group, and the only truly unforgivable sin is betraying the group. it doesn't matter whether you think whatever they've done is right or wrong, you're supposed to side with them and defend them and their actions against outsiders. Whether or not their actions are wrong is utterly irrelevant, only loyality matters. You're supposed to defend and side with members of your group because they are members of your group, and that's the beginning and the end of it.

And that attitude enables these families to be willing to put up with almost anything in the name of being loyal to the family. Like covering up a known abuser in the family and protecting them from any consequence while silencing their victims, and completely disowning and never forgiving the evil family traitor who sided with the victims and snitched to the cops.

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.

for the sake of this thought experiment, let's ignore actual real-world alliances between countries. it can be london, or paris, or athens, or barcelona, or rome, or berlin, or even an american city like new york or new orleans or los angeles or honolulu. this is all a hypothetical after all.

really consider it. if you're gonna bother to yap in my notes, at least try to engage with this question in good faith. imagine opening up the news, and you see that a bomb was dropped on this city, and then the bombs never stop. imagine you had a friend there. imagine you'd had a trip planned to meet them and see the sights. imagine every museum, every historical monument, every theatre, every university destroyed. imagine that one day, you lived in a world where this city existed, and the next, it has completely ceased to be. it's effectively been pompeii-ed out of our world entirely. there is no longer a big ben, or a parthenon, or a colosseum, or what have you. there is no longer that foreign musician you loved from this city. there are no longer sweet old grannies to share old family recipes from this part of the world. there is no longer the online friend you wanted to visit. there is no longer your vacation plans.

don't hit me with, "but it's netanyahu doing this," because israel would literally run out of ammunition in weeks without the US. don't hit me with, "but trump!" because that quite literally is not the fucking question.

if you are still planning to vote for biden, then either a) biden could drop a nuke on any city on earth and it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for you, or b) in your mind, people and places are divided into ones that are acceptable to destroy and ones that are not. or at least, there are ones that are more acceptable to destroy than others.

come up with your answer and either realize you sound like a fascist and work to change it, or embrace that you are a fascist and stop lying to us about caring about people of color.

a thought experiment doesn't work with a loaded question. 'how many babies would @mamenchisaurus1717 have to kill before it's justified to chop his head off' is not a thought experiment. it feels like you're just trying to say "i am right and people who disagree with me are wrong" instead of fostering a genuine intellectual debate (which is what a thought experiment is supposed to do).

but fine. i'll play ball. as to which city would have to be destroyed before i wouldn't vote for biden, and if i ignored alliances and borders... i'd probably say my hometown (no, i am NOT doxxing myself), maybe one of the bigger cities right next to it. i am inherently selfish, and think about the community i actually live in before anyone outside of it.

of course, we don't live in the thought experiment you described. alliances and borders exist. it is netanyahu doing this, and biden is putting pressure on him to sign a ceasefire. trump is literally saying he'll arrest pro-palestine protestors if he gets re-elected. and in the first past the post voting system that the us has, it's either biden or trump for president, and one will become president regardless of who you choose. the real world is complex, and you can't just simplify it and then return to the real world and say "see? that's why you're a fascist for not agreeing with me"

speaking of fascism, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as a political ideology involving a) nationalism above personal identity, b) a social and economic pressure to conform to said nationalism, c) an autocratic regime led by a dictator, and d) a suppression of opposition. b and d are very much not the case in the US, with how vocal and cynical people can get about the government, and the fact that democracy and separation of powers exist make the nation not, in fact, led by a dictator. with that in mind there's no way that a is possible because b, c, and d are not available. you know who is a fascist in ideology (as in, supports a, b, c, and d)? donald trump. you know whose campaign you are indirectly helping by making this post? donald trump. it would be funny if it weren't so dangerous

As someone who was recently in Fukui, this isn't even scratching the surface of how mad the town is for dinosaurs.

For example, here is the outside of the train station:

Never use Surfshark VPN

I just wanted to make this post to warn yall about it, I am not a tech genius but I wanted to get a vpn and surfshark was one I knew about so i subscribed to them because it seemed ok, that was where I fucked up.

fast forward a year and now I am trying to cancel my yearly auto-renewing subscription which costs 70 fuckin bucks, didnt find much use in surfshark as it was too laggy when using its vpn services so i go to billing and try to cancel.

there was no cancel button so that was odd, and you cant turn off auto-renew so i figure ill just get rid of my card info so it cant charge me.

i cant or at least i cant figure out how.

I go to help and find the cancellation area after scrolling past why you should keep the subscription and it tells me to contact their live support to cancel, It requires my name and gmail, I know for a fact my gmail is correct but it says its wrong and that my name is wrong no matter how many ways I enter it and I cant find a possible username anywhere on the site i could use. Its for all practical reasons impossible for me to cancel, not just the fact I cant even talk to customer support, but the people on reddit that do, talk to a bot and then the agents take months to actually turn off the subscription so it charges again and there is no refunds.

I think there's no greater indication that disco elysium is sympathetic towards communism when it literally says "communism is failure" and then the literal gameplay itself rewards trying and failing. The most obvious one being the Shivers check at the FELD mural, which is an Impossible 20 check BUT opens itself up again and again the longer you spend in the world doing things, but even just looking at sheer probabilities, for any given white check, rolling first and THEN putting a point into that skill upon failure is more likely to grant you success than putting a point first and then rolling, but that would require failing first.

Other things too: Precarious world saying you'll 100% fail red checks no matter what (not necessarily a bad thing, btw!! throwing the boule into the sea is a success but like. in some other ways one would want a perfect petanque throw instead. but people wouldn't typically assume that failure is desirable sometimes from the start) persuading you to accept that you'll fail some things that is irrevocable, for a world where everything is just a tiny bit easier.

The faux game over screen when you faint after reading Dora's letter— emulating a sense of failure on the scale of the entire game. When it rolls up most people go "What?? Game over?? No way, what did I do wrong!!" and waking up after that, with no huge or lasting impact on Harry's health or morale really tells the player, "Sometimes things will seem so bad that it all seems like it's coming to an end, but it's not the end, it's really not the end, go drink so water, you can still go on despite this failure"

I'm sure there are other things as well that are eluding me but like. The literal gameplay rewards failing and succeeding far more so than simply succeeding every single time, and I think you get a fuller experience of Elysium that way too
