The dino benches are super cute. The angle is a little weird, though. And there's other seating if you're scared of dinosaurs. Looks like there's non-dino flat benches in the back on the right and a raised stone bench / retaining wall area on the left with grass and trees. I'm a little worried that there's no arm rests on any of the seating areas, though. It might be difficult for people with mobility issues to stand back up. Super cute for in front of a dino museum, though! And I totally want one.

福井・八坂神社　木造牛頭天王座像（重文）

2024年に国重文として答申されたばかりの仏像。

牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）はインド・祇園精舎の守護神で、日本では素戔嗚尊（すさのおのみこと）と神仏習合した疫病除けの神として祀られています。

薬師如来を師と仰ぎ、疫病神を追い払い、東北の鬼門を警備する牛頭天王は、仙人・東王父、仙女・西王母の息子として生まれ、天竺で8万4654の眷属神を従えています。

京都の八坂神社、兵庫の広峯神社を総本社とする祇園信仰の象徴的な霊神です。

こちらの牛頭天王座像は内刳（乾燥による干割れを防ぎ、軽量化するために内部を刳り抜いて空洞にする技法）は使われていない榧の一本造りで制作されています。

虎座（虎の上に跨る姿）で表現され、三面十二臂、頭上には牛を戴、明王のような憤怒の表情で手には蓮華、宝弓、宝箭、鉞斧、如意宝珠、羂索、念珠、宝剣、三鈷杵、宝輪、薬壺などを持っています。

この仏像は通常非公開の秘仏ですが、同時に答申された頭部に十一面観音が乗った木造女神坐像と合わせて廃仏毀釈以前の神仏習合時代における貴重な仏像彫刻の作例です。

〈祇園牛頭天王御縁起より〉

7歳にして身長が7尺5寸、3尺の牛の頭を持ち、3尺の赤い角もあった。

太子は王位を継承して牛頭天王を名乗り、后を迎えようとするものの、その姿形の怖ろしさのために近寄ろうとする女人さえいない。

そのため牛頭天王は酒びたりの毎日を送るようになった。

ある日、3人の公卿が牛頭天王の気持ちを慰安しようと山野に狩りに連れ出すが、そのとき一羽の鳩があらわれ、人間のことばを話すことができる山鳩は、大海に住む沙掲羅龍王（八大龍王）の娘のもとへ案内すると言うので牛頭天王は娘を娶りに出かける旅に出た。

旅の途中、大金持ちで強欲な弟、古単将来に宿を求めたが断られた。

それに対し、貧乏な兄の蘇民将来は喜んで宿を貸し、なけなしの食料の中から粟飯をふるまってくれた。

蘇民将来の親切心と情けにいたく感動した牛頭天王は、願いごとがすべてかなう牛玉を蘇民将来に授け、のちに蘇民は富貴の人となりました。

豊饒国への帰路、牛頭天王は八万四千の眷属を差向け、古単将来への復讐を決意。

強欲な古端将来は千人の僧を集め大般若経を七日七晩にわたって読誦させたが、ひとりの法師が居眠りしたために失敗し、古単の眷属五千余はことごとく蹴り殺された。

牛頭天王は古単の妻だけを蘇民将来の娘であるために助命して、「茅の輪をつくって、赤絹の房を下げ、「蘇民将来之子孫なり」との護符を付ければ、末代までも災難を逃れることができる」と除災の法を教示した。

以上が牛王天皇と蘇民将来伝説を記した室町時代以降の物語である「祇園牛頭天王御縁起」の要約です。

余談ですが、龍宮へ赴いた牛頭天王は、沙掲羅の三女・頗梨采女を娶り、七男一女の王子（八王子）をもうけました。

東京にある八王子の名前の由来は平安時代の高僧・妙行が当時、深沢山（現在の城山）で牛頭天王と8人の王子を祭ったことから付けられたことはあまり知られていませんので、何かのタイミングで知り合いに教えてあげれば一目置かれる事があるかもしれません。

伝説では牛頭天王は天災や戦乱による社会の混乱の世に垂迹（仏が仮に神の姿をとってこの世に現れ、厳罰をもって人々を教化し救済をすること）するといわれていますが、それは正に今なのかもしれません。

Fukui Prefecture is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, and is probably most famous for the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Fukui is also the birthplace of Echizen pottery and home to Eiheiji Temple, the birthplace of Zen Buddhism. There is also Maruoka Castle, one of twelve remaining original castles in the country, and spectacular geology and coastline at the precipitous cliffside of Tojinbo.

I can't talk about Fukui Prefecture without talking about the dinosaurs. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is recognized as one of the top dinosaur museums in the world, and is the largest of its kind in Japan. The museum spans four floors, with the main floor housing the Dinosaur World exhibit where more than 40 dinosaur skeletons are on display (including English explanations). They include examples of the local Fukui-raptor and Fukui-saurus, which were found nearby, as well as several life-size (!) animatronic dinosaurs, including a life-like Tyrannosaurus Rex that greets visitors at the entrance. Other exhibits extend to the other floors, including other fossils and the history of life.

Are dinosaurs found in Japan? Yes! The Kitadani Formation (北谷層) is a unit of Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rock within the Tetori Group, which crops out near the city of Katsuyama in Fukui Prefecture, is only found in Fukui Prefecture, and is the primary source of Cretaceous-aged non-marine vertebrate fossils in Japan. Dinosaur fossils have been recovered from the formation, but it also preserves a diverse assemblage of plants, invertebrates, and other vertebrates. The fossils collected from this formation can be found at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. The Kitadani Formation is significant not only for the dinosaur fossils, but also for the representation of Japan's unique position along the northeastern margin of Eurasia during the Early Cretaceous. The area of Katsuyama City is known as a national geopark, Dinosaur Valley Fukui Katsuyama Geopark.

Bonus: Throughout Katsuyama City and Fukui Prefecture, dinosaur sculptures, art, and little dinosaur Easter eggs abound.

Regional Cuisine - 郷土料理 Echizen oroshi-soba (Buckwheat noodles) - 越前おろしそば

Echizen Oroshi Soba is a local delicacy from Fukui Prefecture that features cold soba noodles topped with a soy sauce-flavored broth, grated daikon radish, shaved bonito flakes, and chopped green onions. Spicy daikon radish is used for the grated daikon, adding a little kick to the dish. The name “Echizen Oroshi Soba” gained national recognition when Emperor Showa (1901–1989) visited Fukui Prefecture. He tasted Echizen Oroshi Soba during his visit and praised its flavor, remarking, “The soba from Echizen was truly delicious.” This praise significantly contributed to the dish’s popularity spreading across the country.

Fukui Dialect・Fukui-hougen・新潟方言

Fukui has two prominent dialects - Fukui-ben (福井弁) in the north (嶺北) and Wakasa-ben (若狭弁) in the south (嶺南). Because Fukui is close to Kansai in the south, Wakasa-ben resembles Kansai-ben closely, while Fukui-ben exhibits changes in pronouncing the sounds of words to make the pronunciation more convenient.

Note: Some words below are used in both dialects, and some in one or the other.
