October is both Adhd Awareness Month AND LGBT History Month so if youāre both then prepare to be extremely powerful
people understand that Spanish speakers speak different dialects of the Spanish language but donāt understand that black people speak a dialect of the English language
saw a variation of this conversation on twitter earlier
I just want to state for the record that this is completely uncontroversial among linguists. Itās the first day of sociolinguistics class.
I majored in Communication Disorders to become an Speech Language Pathologist and am currently and Assisstant. When we were in class we were taught about this as well as other dialect. Under no circumstances do you treat a client for what is considered a dialect. So as a speech therapist when I hear AAVE I move on. It is a real language with real rules.
Thats why it was outrage in the speech community post Katrina when teachers began to recommend students for speech, when it was simply the New Orleans dialect.
āIt is a real language with real rules.ā

See that picture above? Thatās a close up of my great grandmotherās immigration papers when she first came to the US back in the early 20th century. But my great grandmaās information isnāt the important part here. The important part is that line in the middle there about how they arrived in the country.
And how āstowawayā is a legitimate, valid option to select.
So yeah. They absolutely just showed up, and that part of immigration history needs to be talked about a lot more.
REMINDER THAT TRAVEL VISAS AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY WERE INVENTED IN THE 1930S TO KEEP JEWISH REFUGEES OUT OF COUNTRIES THAT DID NOT WANT ANĀ āINFLUXā OF THEM, THEREBY FACILITATING THEIR GENOCIDE :)))))
read What is A Refugee for more history. Educate yourselves.

literally every sleep advice pamphlet and website: donāt do things before bedtime! no reading! no video games! donāt watch tv! nothing stimulating at all within two hours of going to bed! :)
me, an adhd: you fools. you buffoons. i canāt even manage one minute without stimulation. i will die before following this advice and that is a threat
Has anyone ever seen that picture of the horse in the pool with the sunglasses wearing dog in its back and the āDā from the Hollywood sign thrown in the bushes?

Iām getting fed up with this whole āfeminism as an identityā thing. Time for āfeminism as an action.ā
So instead of asking ācan a feminist do x?ā ask āis doing x a feminist action!ā
Can a feminist take her husbandās last name? Mu. Null. Question un-valid, please un-ask question.
Is taking your husbandās last name a feminist action? No it isnāt. It doesnāt challenge the patriarchy in anyway, it is the status quo thing to do, it is what is expected of women, and it carries a lot of historical baggage about ownership and shit like that.
But thatās okay, your life choices donāt have to be 100% dictated by your politics unless you want them to. And itās okay to really want to take his name while recognizing that you also want to do the feminist thing and keep your own, and itās okay to feel conflicted and have a hard time making the choice. But no more of this enabling āas long as I made the choice myself it is a feminist choiceā -bullshit. Own your choices, even the ones that arenāt informed by your feminist politics. You are still a human being and people do shit that contradicts their politics and even interests all the time. Just stop pretending that everything you do is feminist because you are a feminist, thatās not how it works.
^^this is why bell hooks challenges us to sayĀ āi support feminist movementā orĀ āi support feminist actionā rather than āi am a feminist.ā she says that once we say āi am a feministā and make āfeministā an identity rather than a political movement or a set of beliefs and the actions resulting from those beliefs, we can become complacent and think the battle is over.Ā
