For several months Iâm at school to get a diploma (I wonât get into what Iâm studying because anonymity) and a few weeks ago someone from a company working with secular organizations but also christians (because the founder are christians) showed up to talk about his work and if weâre interested in joining in someday.
So I personnaly felt bad while listening to him because pls, I come from a christian cult, live with my parents who are still in it and I donât want to have to listen to christian and religion stuff when Iâm outside too!!
And felt very alone because the other people in my class listening seems normal with the topic. But when he left I was relieved because they all werenât feeling it at all, the christian aspect was too much for them too. (For context maybe, I live in a European country very attached to secularity even if there are religious people, idk the radio between religious and atheists tho)
Btw, someone asked him if we had to be christian to get into the company and he said, and I quote the best I can
Oh no donât worry, itâs just that the founders are christians so we work a lot on christianity but we also have a bhudist colleague and she do her weird stuff with the moon but sheâs nice
We talked about it when he left like how condescending he was, what would he think if his colleague said something like âYeah Iâm in a weird company full of christians with their weird crosses and angels and allâ???
So anyways weeks passes and we have to work on a group project and guess what it is about?? The christian company!!
So it wasnât easy for me, like, one evening some schoolmates started talking about religion and christianity and I was just listening. The discussion was very interesting but itâs just too overwhelming for me. I felt stressed out. People were talking about their beliefs or lack of, someone said his dadâs family is full of radical christians and I almost let out a âWell I was born in a cultâ but decided not to drop the bomb and my heart was beating too fast and my breath was shaky. Fortunately the day was almost done so I was able to left quickly the room without anyone noticing my discomfort (the mask helped too!).
Something similar happened to me like a year ago, with muslims and other people talking about muslim beliefs and I felt also very uncomfortable even if the discussion was normal.
If itâs not religious trauma idk what it is.
Do you also have this problem? How do you overcome it?
