Design Lab Reviews

As part of their Silver Arts Award portfolio our Design Lab students wrote their own art and media reviews, and we liked them so much we wanted to share them here!

First up, Alex gives us her review of Yorkshire Sculpture Park...

“I visited Yorkshire Sculpture Park with my school. I didn’t realise how large it was and how much ground it covered. Walking round the countryside seeing different 3D models made us feel connected with the work. Exploring to find the next model made our trip interesting. I enjoyed having an abstract piece of art and questioning what it could be. The freedom of interpretation and walking wherever for miles and miles meant we could get lost in our imagination. The photography opportunities were never ending as photographing work from different angles changed your perspective of what it could be. Overall the trip was really good however we did get tired of walking about very quickly.”

This week we visited another School of Art project, Design Lab, at Stockport’s Marketplace Studios. As part of their Silver Arts Award preparation the young people taking part in Design Lab organised and delivered a day of activities and an exhibition, featuring screenprinting, a cafe and lots of great art work.

This weekend was our Saturday Club Masterclass, and we were very lucky to welcome filmmakers Wriggles and Robins to Manchester School of Art!

We worked with them to create Pancake Day animations, using batter as our media for stop motion animations.

We had an amazing time this weekend at Yorkshire Sculpture Park! We visited the Arts Council Collection’s Revolt and Revolutions exhibition, and learned about textiles and protest.

This week we followed the d.school Virtual Crash Course in Design Thinking, learning how empathy and human-centered design can lead to surprising outcomes. Some were very surprising indeed!

On Saturday 27th January we had a wonderful masterclass session with Womenswear designer Sara Nash, turning unwanted garments into unique new creations!

This year we started Saturday Club with two weeks of animation, lead by our Saturday Club Tutor, and illustrator/animator, Rachel McMahon. In week one we rotoscoped a clip of our visit to Plant NOMA, and in the second week we made our own stop motion Lego movie!

A visit from the Arts Council Collection!

Our third guest blog from Saturday Club ambassador Freya...

This week we were visited by Natalie Walton from the Arts Council Collection. She started off by telling us a bit about the collection and talking about any collections that we might have. She told us that Arts Council is a huge collection, spread across a number of warehouses throughout the country, and that every item is donated by different artists. She also told us that the Arts Council lends artwork to whoever wants it as long as they agree to look after it.

She then gave us the task of creating a protest banner about something we feel strongly about, which we would then carry on a protest through Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We produced lots of banners about lots of different subjects from mental health to Brexit.

We learnt that the Arts Council Collection belongs to everybody and that collections are everywhere, even if we didn’t realise it, we probably all have a collection that we look after and keep safe.

We also learnt that art can come in a lot of different forms, including bedsits flooded with copper sulphate, rooms filled with clay people and bobbin wound with hair.

Ceramics work with Charlie Manthorp 25.11.17

How exciting, our second guest blog from Saturday Club Ambassador Freya!

This week we went on a trip to Plant Noma, where we took part in a ceramic workshop with Charlie Manthorp. Charlie bases his work on the personal belongings of ex-homeless people, he focusses on telling the story behind it.

We were told to bring a personal item of our own. First, we drew parts of the objects, mainly textures and parts that caught our eye. Then we started working with the clay to make the objects and to begin to tell their story. Before we go back in a couple of weeks, Charlie will fire our work in the kiln, ready to be glazed and completed when we return.

London Trip Autumn 2017

Please welcome our first guest blog, from Saturday Club Ambassador, Freya! Freya came with us to London a couple of weeks ago, and has shared her experiences below.

Last week we went on a trip to London to meet with all of the other National Saturday Clubs. We met at Manchester Piccadilly Station at 10.00 to board a train at 10.30.

After a two hour journey we arrived at Euston station and we walked a short way to Central Saint Martin’s college, where we would meet the other Saturday clubs. After a Lunch break we had a photo with our exhibit and had a look at the other Saturday clubs work. There were lots of very interesting portraits with lots of different medias from bacteria to craft knives. We then listened to a short talk from a Lego designer and went into groups for the activity. In the activity we had to build a transient city, each of us creating a tracing paper building. When we had finished the activity we placed our buildings with all of the others. We worked in mixed groups from other Saturday clubs, this taught us to work with other people that we hadn’t met before.

After that we set off to Wellcome place. At the Wellcome collection we visited their current exhibition, “Can graphic design save my life?”, which was all about how graphic design can help us become aware of illnesses, symptoms and medicines etc. This taught us a lot because we had not really thought about graphic design saving lives. Everyone enjoyed it and learnt something new.

Last week we made collaged self-portraits, which we’ll send down to London to be displayed at Central Saint Martins university! We’re looking forward to seeing self-portraits by Saturday Clubs from across the country.

On 28th October we had the opportunity to visit Wythenshawe Forum to take part in lots of exciting activities as part of Manchester Science Festival and the Crafts Council’s Make:Shift:Do conference.

We learned about the health benefits of herbs, made our own robots and even did a bit of monoprinting!

This Saturday was our first Saturday Club session of the new year! We took part in a Design Manchester workshop all about Play in design, run by students from MMU.

We were challenged to build some salt-supporting-structures, then created prototypes for tools to change our lives!

We’re so excited to see the film The Saturday Club Trust made of our masterclass with Sophie Thomas! It really captures a sense of what a dynamic day it was!

This weekend we had the opportunity to join Saturday Club’s from across the country at the Saturday Club Summer Show. It was amazing to see our work exhibited at Somerset House, and great to see Sophie Thomas, our Masterclass leader, again.
