DDJ 6 - Week 1

Five years ago I participated in the first Dream Diary Jam, making the first version of Manda no Yume. This year I decided to participate again, but with an entirely new Yume Nikki fangame.

Instead of a Manda update, I thought it would be fun to start from scratch with a new entry. Its been five years, so I'm wondering how it will compare to the first entry.

In 2018 I entered the jam but didn't get very far. If I don't end up finishing it this year then I'll either finish it later or port some of the content over to Manda in the future.

The protagonist of this game is Aubriette. I don't have much to add on her yet, but she clearly likes books.

Aubriette's room is a green refuge from the everlasting rain outside. Will it ever stop? Thunderstorms are said to take out the power from time to time, maybe we should sleep through it.

Along the railroad track is a mine field, thankfully it has already been swept.

I wonder where these pipes lead. Or are they lead pipes?

I didn't get as much done in this first week as I wanted, but I'm further along than I ever was in 2018. I started planning back in January, so I have a bunch of ideas and world sketches written down to get through. I have most of the effects planned out, but I'll be posting about those in a later week.

Manda no Yume v0.04 Update

Manda no Yume v0.04 has been released!

This update turned out to be another refresh of the entire game. Without a time constraint I was able to put a lot of work into the game's foundation.

This version is light on content so that I'm not spread too thin on fixing issues. Once a stable build has been reached, I plan to add some more content.

Four Years

Today is Manda no Yume's 4 year anniversary.

The v0.04 update is codenamed 'Redream', because its effectively a remake/remaster of the previous version.

A lot of things have been added, scrapped, and retooled in the two years since v0.03, remaking the game over and over is an exhausting process but this time I think I've finally achieved my vision.

I want to add more content and make a complete experience, with plenty of worlds, effects, music, and eventually an ending. I have plenty of ideas, but I think with how sweeping this update will be under the hood I'll have to keep it shorter than I'd like for now.

Its wild to see any enthusiasm over what I make, when I get burned out I go back and read comments and it gets me going.

I stopped posting progress because I had a tendency to show something and then remove or change it. With this coming update I'd like to 'finalize' many parts of the game, so going forward I can make new stuff and share it without feeling any guilt.

I have things in store for v0.04, and some more stuff I'll probably push back into further updates.

Effect Painting

All effects now share the same alternate color palettes, in the form of paint.

Finding paint in the dream world will allow every effect to be recolored with that color. Some effects have multiple color layers, allowing different parts of the effect to be painted.

The ability icon and keys previously at the top left of the screen are now displayed on the phone at the bottom. Effects in the 4 'functional' effect slots (Head, Body, Accessory, Feet) can be cycled between with 'S', and their respective abilities used with 'SHIFT' and 'A'.

Pressing 'Q' will switch the effect in the currently chosen slot, allowing to switch effects on the fly - without opening the effect menu. The effect menu will still be needed to paint effects, and to switch effects in the non-functional slots (Hat, Hair, Shirt, Pants).

The clothing for each effect will flash when cycling to that slot in the phone, so the phone won't need to be looked at when switching.

Nexus Doors

An ever-changing mechanic of the game has been one of the simplest: the nexus. Ver 0.01 had a traditional nexus, albeit not the greatest looking one. Ver 0.02 switched to a laptop with worlds selected with a cursor. Ver 0.03 combined both of these, a traditional nexus accessed through a laptop with world icons instead of doors. I've experimented with the bedroom as a nexus with movable furniture as the doors, a telescope to view constellations where each world is a different star, a corkboard with pictures of each world where choosing the pin changes where the bed takes you, ...

Now I've decided to combine many of these ideas into a simpler, but powerful, new nexus.

Familiarly, sleeping in the bed will take you to the dream balcony, where entering the dream bedroom will have a door that takes you to the nexus. The nexus is a night sky, filled with stars. Some small faint stars are scattered amongst the scene, indicating spots for doors. Every world is planned to have a door, not just the few.

These doors can be found in their worlds, and when activated will immediately appear in the nexus. Each door can be entered to quickly return to the world on the other side. Upon traveling between two connected worlds, a line will be drawn in the nexus connecting the two door's stars. If one of the world's doors has not been found, the line won't be as bright.

Activating a door will also reward that door's pin for the collection.

Maps of each world can be viewed in the phone under 'worlds'.

Collecting Pins

Pins are the new collectible in Manda no Yume. Various objects have pins that can be obtained through a variety of methods, similar to wallpapers in other fangames.

The collection can be viewed in the phone under 'Pins'. There are multiple types of pins: Normal, Rare, Effect, Cosmetic, and World.

Normal and Rare pins represent various things in the game, from mushrooms to chasers. Acquiring these could require taking pictures, interacting with certain characters, or finding them in specific places.

Effect pins are pins of each effect, and are acquired when the effect is found. Cosmetic pins are pins for each cosmetic effect in the game.

World pins represent each world in the game, will be shown more in another post.

Some pins can be found in the dream world, but are so small that you can't see them. To pick these up, you'll need to know where they are. Some hints may be left in the dream world, such as a picture of exactly where it is.

Some pins need to be made from the other pins, somehow.

Collecting pins can reward you with cosmetics.

A few purple pins can be found that seem as if they originated from another world, so be on the lookout for those rare pins.
