I was applying for PhD funding. The guy in charge (whose name I had already forgotten) told me they were going to give £90k a year. He told me it was a lot but you’ve gotta spend your money on something. Then I went outside to see that the zombie apocalypse had begun while we’d been talking.

i started my phd program this week and it feels SOOOOOO GOOD to be back in academia!!! not to be dramatic but during the orientation i was so overwhelmingly happy i could have cried. i have great classes, everybody in my program is nice and cool and nerdy and passionate about marine science, i have an awesome advisor and my own little cubicle to decorate, i get to have HOMEWORK and READINGS and ASSIGNMENTS and MEETINGS again!

my best friend is in town, but I gotta write my research proposal for the GRFP...I have the outline but my hopes for winning the award are not high
