heathers is a musical about toxic gender roles like it really truly is this isn't even a reach. the heathers all have the same name because they are all trying to fit into the same variety of person and chandler actually succeeds but duke and mcnamara will never be able to truly catch up. martha represents innocent girlhood while chandler represents experienced womanhood and veronica tries to run from one to the other only to find that while society seems like it likes the second one more they actually just hate all women full stop. our introduction to jd is him being bullied homophobically. his first interaction with veronica is talking to her about literature. kurt or ram have a line at the beginning like "why do i act like such a creep." everyone in this story is playing a role they hate and jd tries to escape through violence but he's not actually punching up he's only hurting other people in the same boat. god is there

also obviously neither martha nor chandler Actually Embody the roles i've listed for them here like martha is actually incredibly bright (see: figuring out who ram's killer was) and as much as chandler talks shit she is in fact seventeen (it is so narratively crucial that they are all seventeen. these people are Not Adults) it's just that it's very very easy for veronica to fall into the trap of seeing both of them that way
