He looks right at her. And then, quite literally, hops three feet to the left.
Marty means to get up-his-ass for being a smartass, but she’s actually –– thoroughly delighted, much as Marty ever gets.
“Good job. Accurate jump.”
Kennedy’s function in this circle, if any, is a mystery to most. It’s the same kind of question they wind up asking themselves an hour or so before clocking out. The usual, droning, what am I doing here? or what is the point of this? But the week’s barely begun, they can’t get bogged down this early.
“Huh, really?” The chuckle is quiet, but genuine. The coffeemaker rattles like it’s had a pneumonia the past ten years. “Generous of you to leave it in the double digits.”
Marty rolls her neck, listening to the satisfying crunch-pop that draws half a shudder out of her. Listening to that more than to Kennedy. Marty’s got a bad case of the walk of shame paired off with a bad hangover; she’s hoping that Kennedy’s got more sense than their boyfriend than to bring it up when - - what was that about double digits? “What? Oh.” Sniff. Slurp of coffee. She clears her throat, shrugs. “You ain’t bad.”
“I see a propensity for obesity, poverty, a yen for fairy tales, folks putting what few bucks they do have into the little wicker baskets being passed around. I think it’s safe to say that nobody here is gonna be splitting the atom, Marty.”
detcctive:
“i can’t help it. i’m an ‘always-right’ kinda gal.” wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. she’s used to getting into arguments, whether it be with marty or some other workplace idiot.
“Both of you need to work on that.” As if Marty doesn’t have an ego that you can punch holes in like tissue paper. As if she doesn’t constantly measure up the things said to her to see if the line up with the picture she wants to project. “Can’t be walking on glass for either of you.” Sip. “Thanks for the coffee.”
– but I think I’m all fucked up. ( indie marty hart. )
“Tell me where, then. I’ll hop right to it.”
Is this an abuse of police power? “About three feet to your left.”
“ — sure.” Her shoulders are still wracked high with tension: being in another place, somewhere right on the bible belt where everybody breathes sin and confession is as much a part of life as blinking — it’s making her nervous. It’s not just the skin-deep kind of nervous that she can shake off with a couple fingers of whiskey and a cheap thrill; it’s something deeper, a little uglier, a bone-ache.
Ani lifts her hand to grasp Marty’s, offers a smile that doesn’t really do much on her face other than press little divots into the spaces either side of her lips. “Bezzerides, by the way. Ani.”
“Detective Bezzerides.” Her smile is pleasant, cooperative, rolling Ani’s name about in her mouth like she’s committing it to memory. It’s amazing how professionalism is a suit that Marty can wear better than most - a feat that she knows some people don’t believe in; that Marty’s all anger and gritted teeth, when she’s not. Rust flies off the handle faster than she does, more inclined to rudeness than she is. There’s a reason she’s still senior. She’s got people skills.
Now Marty’s pulling close chipped cups and shaking the dregs at the bottom of the canteen, setting about making a new pot. The other boys’ll thank her later, as if Marty did it for them and didn’t just want a drink. “How d’you take it? -- the coffee, but also having to get shipped out of the golden state to follow leads over here.”
“I’m just – “
He holds up his hand, cigarette tucked between his fingers.
“ – Having a smoke. Is that loitering?”
“Can be. Think there’s laws about bein a certain amount of feet from a building, now.”
( mansprice // starter call )
the coffee mug slides across the desk right into marty’s hands. “for snappin’ at your input yesterday.”
Spoils of war. Marty’ll take the coffee over any kind of drawn out bullshit. Not good enough to leave it be: “You and Rust have got skins like paper sometimes, I swear.”

They say it like an exclamation with the air let out of it, “It’s me, Kennedy…! I assume my presence has just brightened your grey Monday morning by a minimum of twenty-four percent.” The jaw-straining yawn puts a dampener on the greeting, and ensuing jazzhands are… lacklustre.
What does Kennedy do here. What is Kennedy’s function. How is Kennedy getting paid for shunting into Marty’s Monday mornings this way? Marty’s got her palms locked around a mug and her face buried in the warm smell of office coffee, trying to shake off the ugly last night same clothes aura from her shoulders. She gives Kennedy a two finger salute hello and they yawn catches; Marty swears under her breath, setting the mug down and stretching until her ribs hurt from the exertion.
“ -- make it twenty-two.”
This macho intimidation bullshit may work on drunk girls at frat parties, but it doesn’t work on me. So get the hell out of my face.

“Hey buddy. You look kinda lost. We got a thing against loitering, though. Better move it along.”
