I took this beautiful photo at 6:20am the morning after hurricane Maria devastated our beautiful island. For me it was a message. That after surviving the absolute wrath of nature fall upon us, hope is what will give us strength now. We cannot lose hope. Never, ever. This hurricane is a total game changer. We will have to completely rebuild. We must learn to be united despite of everything that existed before. Many people are traumatised and are talking about leaving Puerto Rico . Most of us are worried because we cannot reach any of our loved ones in other remote parts of the island. Hope. Love. Faith.❤️

When my gorgeous friend and amazing Bombera dancer Yadilka Rodriquez from Restauración Cultural in Puerto Rico,  who first  inspired me to embrace Bomba dance in 2014, asked if I would photograph her to celebrate her   beautiful new Bomba skirt , I knew old San Juan was the place to do it.  This invitation  was even more exciting when she wore one  of my own Tshirt designs “Warrior Afro Star”, by my other label, Deevah Yoga PR,  with her skirt made and designed by the Chicago based, gifted Puerto Rican visual artist, and designer Reynaldo GuAracibo Rodriguez.   We Puerto Ricans aren’t only beautiful , we are talented!!! Remnants of war on #flamencobeach on the tiny island of Culebra , one of our tiny islands gems and the pride of Puerto Rico. This beach was rated as one of the best beaches in the world. Funny they didn't mention the tank. So how did it get there? In 1939, the U.S. Navy began to use the Culebra Archipelago as a gunnery and bombing practice site. This was done in preparation for the United States' involvement in World War II. In 1971 the people of Culebra began protests, known as the Navy-Culebra protests, for the removal of the U.S. Navy from Culebra. Four years later, in 1975, the use of Culebra as a gunnery range ceased and all operations were moved to Vieques (Wikipedia 2016). They had already been in Vieques ( another one of our islands) since 1941 doing even worse damage to la nena island until again, a massive civil disobedience forced the US Navy to close all operations in 2003.
