On the 20th September 2015 I completed my first running event, which was the Nuffield Health Stoke-On-Trent 10k. Initially I was aiming to finish it in under 50 minutes as during my 10k training my personal best was 49:21.

The organiser did a brilliant job, the atmosphere was so friendly and many people came out just to watch. 715 people took part in the race altogether and my tactic was to follow one of the running clubs and to try and keep up with their pace. After roughly 700m, I realised that they were doing 4 minutes per km. and I knew that if I carried on at that pace I would be unable to complete the race, and so I adopted a new pace suitable for me which was between 4:10 – 4:30 per km.

Looking at the stats (image above) I am really happy with the first 8 km and also the 9th, which is known as ‘Hell Hill’, as during my training this same hill took me 6 minutes. So there we go my first 10K done, finished 61/715 overall and 36th in my category. 

The answer is one. You only need one race to fall in love with running. You might say if I have finished slower than my target time I won’t feel the same, well I guess if that is the case you just gave yourself a better reason to sign up for another race. Writing this blog just made me realise the 2016 Stoke 10k is starting soon (18-09-2016), hopefully after reading this blog you, my friends, are ready to sign up for this year Stoke 10k.
