academia things that genuinely make me happy
large textbooks filled with extra papers which hold the answers to the problems you thought were too brilliant to be thrown away, or the simple short summary of a part you were struggling to understand before
having your textbook absolutely ruined by highlighters and sticky notes all over it, those little tips and ideas you picked up from the lesson. anyone who opens that book immediately knows that youâve studied the crap out of it and know the concept by heart. âthis is the most annotated book iâve ever seenâ is literally the highest form of compliment for me.
solving math or chemistry problems to a soundtrack album or ambient sounds, extra points if itâs in afternoon lol
when youâre so focused and keen on getting to the final answer that your hand physically canât keep up with your eagerness so you end up with the most incoherent solution. but youâve finally got the answer right!
being self-taught in a subject or a few chapters of the textbook, and still smashing the quizzes and the exams
coming up with a new solution to the problem, or seeing the problem from a new perspective, and finally being able to solve it because of just that.
confidently walking out of the exam room. 0 doubt in your mind that you crushed it!
actually feeling how youâve grown academically, and how much more knowledgeable you are compared to the beginning of the semester
casually and confidently having conversations with a professor about your studies, exchanging ideas and discussing the existing theories, methods, on-going research and all
all of this is everything i want in life- godÂ
in spanish we donât say âi love youâ, we say âme esta persiguiendo walt whitmanâ and i think thatâs beautiful <3 ïżŒïżŒ
I donât understand Spanish but I understood this

the signs as favorite words of authors
Source:Â Ben Blatt, Nabokovâs Favorite Word is Mauve:
Blatt looked for the specific words that authors use much more frequently than the rate at which those words generally occur in the rest of written English (i.e., compared to a huge sample of literary works â some 385 million words in total â written in English between 1810 and 2009, assembled by linguists at Brigham Young University).
His criteria: A favorite word -
Must occur in at least half of the authorâs books
Must be used at a rate of at least once per 100,000 words
Must not be so obscure that itâs used less than once per million in the BYU sample of written English
Is not a proper noun
ARIES: Dan Brown: grail, masonic, pyramid TAURUS: Jane Austen: civility, fancying, imprudence GEMINI: Vladimir Nabokov: mauve, banal, pun CANCER: Virginia Woolf: flushing, blotting, mantelpiece LEO: Ian Fleming: lavatory, trouser, spangled VIRGO: Edith Wharton: nearness, daresay, compunction LIBRA: Agatha Christie: inquest, alibi, frightful SCORPIO: John Cheever: infirmary, venereal, erotic SAGITTARIUS: Mark Twain: hearted, shucks, satan CAPRICORN: Ernest Hemingway: concierge, astern, cognac AQUARIUS: J.K. how to feel academic on online school
I know itâs hard enough to feel like a dark academic at public school, and online classes have made it even more difficult so:
splash your face with cold water to draw back the curtain of exhaustion
change into a sweater before class starts
make coffee/tea when you wake up and drink it at your desk as you look over your agenda for the day
write poetry (or shitposts) in the margin of your notes
keep a google doc open for when inspiration strikes during your next zoom (or to write down funny experiences you can look back on)
have music playing in your bedroom
when bored: plan a heist on the page behind your notes
write reminders on your hands in black ink and be frustrated when they smudge and you forget what you were reminding yourself of
take a walk during your break; read, admire the flowers, hum to yourself
keep flowers on your desk and watch them wilt over the course of the weeks
also have a plant you can nurture and talk to
if you have a clock or watch, watch the seconds tick by during periods of reflection
coffee runs, even if itâs only to your kitchen
make a moodboard of your favorite quotes/aesthetics/pictures/art on the wall near your workspace to look at as you yearn for the good times
lighting: make it fit your mood. candles, fairy lights, natural light from your window, whatever makes you feel your best aesthetic self
itâs really hard to stay motivated, so try to remember your end goals and to convince yourself youâre interested in the topics at hand (even if you hate it) because that usually makes you put in more effort
pretend youâre the main character in a da film
Hi mum! Im so anxious because of online lessons, our school has a rule that the camera should be open all the time and that makes me really anxious, how can i overcome that đi dont even understand the lesson because of stress
Hello bb,
The real question is what are you afraid of? Itâs just a camera, you are not going to be recorded, you are not going to pick your nose, you are not getting pranked by classmates and teachers. Those people have all seen your face before. Why is it different now? What do you think is going to happen?
Now, two things:
If youâre insecure because you donât like your face, work on your set up. Make sure youâll get enough light, that the angle will not make you look like a thumb (feel free to put books under your monitor if so), wear something cute, smile. I.e. work on increasing your confidence.
If someone does decide to act like a waste of oxygen, you donât have to engage. You are making yourself sick over people you donât like, donât care about, and will, when you eventually leave the school, never see again. Theyâre nothing to you. So why do they get to dictate your mood for an entire school year?Â
Feel free to put a sticky note on those kidsâ faces if that helps. Think of your priorities: imagine how mad future you probably is that youâre neglecting your education because people are seeing you on a screen. Ultimately, we all grow to stop caring about trivial things, and this is one of them - you canât let other people run your life, especially because thereâs always going to be that type of someone around, at school, at work, at the gym, etc. But they only get the importance theyâre craving (because theyâre miserable) if you give it to them. The earlier you learn to filter them out, the better off youâll be.
Love,
Mum
How many of these movies have you seen that people said âyou havenât seen [blank] yet??â to me about
Dear Editor- I must admit you are not the first person I've asked this of, but I will ask anyways. I am currently a teenager, trying to figure out what I want to do in the future and who I am as a person. Do you have any advice? Thank you so much, an anxious youth
Gentle Reader--
I congratulate you First on your Methods in seeking Answers to your Momentous Question; There is Nothing Better in Pursuit of Oneâs Philosophies and Way of Living than a Diversity of Opinion, Especially for the Young. Where Many may be Satisfied with the Ways and Mores of their Forebears, and Others Still the First Dissenting Thought they arrive at, it is my Firm Belief that a True Understanding of Oneâs Character and Opinions comes of Thorough Inquiry on the Subject. I arrived at this Conclusion Later than I ought, and it pleases me to share it with Another who might have Good Use of it Sooner.
The Burden of Youth is Also its Greatest Promise. A Future Yet to be Explored, Monumental in its Unknowns. One Rarely knows at Seventeen Just who one shall be at Twenty, let Alone Thirty, Fifty, or Eighty. (Indeed, there are More than you may expect who Equally do not know who they shall become at Any Point in their Lives.) For Some this Freedom is Enticing, for Others Paralysing, yet Both must embrace it to Some Degree, Whether they do So Early or Late. Considering this, the Advice I have for you Perhaps is Obvious, and More Likely of Little Use. It is Simply that one Very Seldom decides who they are, and Rarer Still for those who make Such Proclamations to maintain them. As Uncertainty is the Condition of the World, there is No Shame in being Uncertain Yourself, but: Such Uncertainty must be Accompanied by a Willingness to venture, Even in the Smallest Degree, Toward New Pursuits, Ideas, and Aims. Only by learning of the World can you know what you love Best in it.
Yours &tc., The Editor
âi donât like writing about my day, but i want to keep a journalâ:
quotes and copywork. when reading, if you find something you enjoy, just copy it into the notebook. you can copy a whole chapter if you wish, highlighting what caught your attention the most.
definitions. look up on a dictionary and copy it. you could write your own dictionary as well, making up definitions for words.
lists. a classic, write movies to watch, books to read, the playlist of the month or just the groceries you have to buy.
maps. when going somewhere, you could draw the route you took or just a map of the place itself. just look up the place on google maps and copy it. you can draw a little map of all the places you have lived or the schools you have attended as well.
photos
take ânotesâ as you watch movies / documentaries. write down phrases that caught your attention or doodle.
illustrations and clippings. if you see an image or piece of art that you liked, put it in your journal. if itâs from a book or from a magazine I would recommend scanning it, thoâ. it will serve as a record of what kind of art you enjoy through the years.
newspaper clippings from the day.
tickets and pamphlets. from movies, museums, transportation.
postcards
records. you could record for a month what the temperature was when you woke up and when you went to sleep. if you do that for a year, it gives you a better notion of the passing of seasons. you could record rainfall and other seasonal changes as well. you could choose something (an animal, a plant, an item or object) and write down every time you see it.
rubbings of leaves, coins, landmarks.
count. thereâs a scene in the movie Coraline (2009) where Coralineâs dad tells her to go count the windows. you could do the same type of counting game if you are bored and write down.
mindmaps/sketchnotes + timelines of books, movies, music albums.
collages
pressed leafs and flowers
your collections. if you collect anything you could write down an inventory or maybe try to draw the items.
recipes. write down recipes and give it a score every time you try it. you could do the same for drinks you try out.
stickers
comic strips. you can find a bunch of it online, glue your favorites in your notebook.
austen couples + romance tropes
Poets have their desks and pockets filled with poems, artists with sketches, and mine are filled with equations, calculus and books.
After all, we, scientists and you, romantics, aren't so different.
