It was another busy and restless day for the ruler of the Candy Kingdom and by then the princess was nearly drained out from a day of endless tasks. She did all of her work…
“You don’t have to sound so proper, princess. It’s just me, after all.”
Marceline drifted slowly into the large room, floating for a moment before landing quietly on the floor. She blew a stray strand of long hair out of her face and crossed her arms, letting her eyes wander to the T-shirt Bubblegum was wearing. So she wasn’t lying, after all. “I see you weren’t kidding when you said you wore that shirt to bed, huh?” A quiet laugh echoed through the room, followed by the soft click of her red boots on the floor.
“I came because I… Ugh. Well, I wanted to talk about you know, yesterday. With the door thing.” This was far more awkward than she’d anticipated. “It means a lot that you kept my present.”
Bubblegum sighed, shutting the window behind Marceline. She crossed her arms against her chest, not daring to take a step towards the vampire. “Yeah, well.. I wouldn’t lie about something like that” she said, feeling a small blush dance across her cheeks. She hid her face and hoped that it was dark enough where Marceline couldn’t see it. “I, uh.. Suppose we should talk about that. Like I said before, it means a lot to me but now it’s my turn to ask questions” she said, unfolding her arms and placing one on her hip. “That song. What was all of that about?”
It was Marceline’s turn now to hide her face, letting her eyes wander around at the various pink decor that adorned the walls and floor of the bedroom. “It was just a song, PB. I just… I sing about stuff that bothers me.”
Maybe this was the wrong time. The wrong place.
“I don’t want us to fight anymore. I don’t want to just be another problem on your list.”
“You’re not my problem. Maybe..” she started, trailing off at her last word. “We used to be better than this. On good terms for once. You can’t think that you’re the only one that’s having a tough time about this, Marceline” she said while furrowing her eyebrows, but soon soften up her features. She didn’t want to start another petty argument. “I don’t want to fight anymore either..” she said softly, sitting on the edge of her bed and started playing with her fingers. “I’m sorry for always being so rude towards you. I just always thought you were too.. different from me and people like us would never get a long. We’re complete opposites so it’s only born to happen”
“I’m not?” There was a genuine sense of surprise in Marceline’s voice when the words escaped her, fixing her eyes once more on the princess, wondering, curious.
“We were better than this before. I don’t even really remember why we started fighting, Bonnibel.” When she finished speaking, her feet lifted from the ground once again, bringing her to drift closer to the bed where the princess sat. She waited a moment, floating in place, before she spoke again. “We’ve both been mean to each other, PB. It’s cool. Just ‘cause we’re different doesn’t mean we can’t be, y’know… friends.”
“Friends..” the word lingered on her tongue in a distasteful way. Not as if she didn’t want to be friends since it would give them a good start, but there was always something there that said more than friends. She didn’t quite know what yet. Shrugging her shoulders with a helpless sigh, she let a small smile form on her face. “I like the sound of being friends.. ” she said, forcing herself to make eye contact with the vampire.
The usual sly grin that one could relate to Marceline was now spread along her face once again, if only out of relief that the princess agreed with her. The vampire floated on her back directly over Bubblegum now, tilting her head back to look at her. The dark locks of hair that fell from her head were nearly long enough to reach the floor, creating a kind of waterfall of black that rested directly near the edge of the bed.
"Sounds cool to me, Bonnibel. Maybe we can be... better friends this time around."
