Like @lady-love23 said, butterfree is pretty boss against Brock, if you didn’t choose squirtle as your starter. However, a level 16+ charmeleon can muscle through Brock’s ‘rock hard’ defense. Ivysaur may not get the edge that charmeleon has, but I haven’t played with bulbasaur as my starter in a long time, and that was only a couple of times.
Do not trust the Pokemon Origins anime if you are playing red and blue. I screamed at the screen when nidoran♂ double kicked Brock’s onyx and won. In red and blue, nidoran♂ does not learn double kick until level 43, and that’s only if you don’t let him evolve. However, in yellow, nidoran♂ can learn double kick at level 12. Either way, you can get a nidoran♂ in red and yellow on the very beginning of route 22, taking a hard left out of Viridian City, and jumping in the first patch of grass you see there. If you go much further, you’ll run into your rival, because the dumby tried to go to the elite four without any badges and will be itching for a fight. If you’re playing blue, you’ll get a nidoran♀ instead. Also, in yellow, you can find nidoran♂ on route 2, north of Viridian City, right before the forest.
If you’re planning on using any glitches when you play the game, try to wait until you’ve played through legitimately at least once. However, if you’re still persistent about using glitches, bare in mind that some require you to hold off on battling certain trainers because interacting with them help trigger the glitch (such as the one that allows you to catch mew without a gameshark).
Try not to live up to the expectations of the newer games. Red, blue, and yellow are a lot more laid back than the newer gens, and you can beat them with minimal training. Training helps keep you on your toes though, and prepares you for what’s next, so don’t slack, for sure. You just don’t have to grind nearly as hard if you use the right pokemon elements. R,B&Y are all very much ‘rock, paper, scissors’ games- which is not to say the newer gens ‘over complicate’ the system, just that the first gen games are pretty straight forward.
Save often, heal up at every town both when you get there and before you leave, and stock up on repels before caves. Zubats have a reputation for a reason! Leach life sucks, literally and metaphorically! XD
