Live Parts Generative Design

Role: VP, Marketing Year: 2018

Live Parts is a generative software product from Desktop Metal for fast form finding, assembly consolidation and lightweighting in product development. It was developed to complement and encourage the use of metal 3D printing by simplifying DfAM. 

Desktop Metal launched Live Parts on the main stage of Solidworks World 2018 and struck a strategic partnership with Solidworks to integrate the product into a Solidworks workflow. Press release

Carbon Product Design

Role: Head of Marketing

I was responsible for design at Carbon. The goal was to create a seamless customer experience - from our communications through to every touch point of the product experience. 

I oversaw the UX/UI, industrial design, and branding/packaging for the products, working in-house for the software and packaging and with our incredible partners Bould Design on the hardware.

Carbon Brand

Brand: Carbon Role: Head of Marketing Year:2015

I was responsible for developing Carbon3D's brand and carrying it through to every customer touchpoint. My team and I worked with Moving Brands to move from a somewhat shallow brand to a more sophisticated, industrial look and feel with the depth to scale with our company.

We developed a flexible design system to roll out across the entire experience, from the products to communications, and swag.

Carbon TED Talk

Role: Head of Marketing

Year: 2015

Carbon launched the future of how things are made in March 2015 with a TED talk and on the cover of science magazine.

I led a small team to write the TED talk, position the company, design the brand, build a website and printed collateral, design the printed hero part that drove the product claims, and shoot photography and videos in support this major coming out of stealth party - all within nine weeks.

Apple Smart Signs

Brand: Apple Role: Managing Producer

I joined Apple to manage and redefine their in-store digital signage platform. My job as managing producer was to lead the marcom product roadmap, oversee the team and support product launches globally.

The ‘Smart Sign’ platform was a global retail component that integrated with other retail systems. With a team of 55 people, over 38,000 in-store devices across 400 stores and 20 languages, it was the largest centrally managed signage platform of its kind.

Every product launch and new country for Apple Retail require digital signs to be designed, configured, and localized. In addition to maintaining the existing infrastructure, I also oversaw the migration to an on-product signage solution (abandoning the iPad 2 hardware) which launched in 2015.

Bloom Generative Light

Role: Producer Year: 2013

Cancer patients who are hospitalized for a week or longer often prefer not to have visitors. But that doesn’t mean they don’t cherish thoughts and prayers. And its hard to say the right thing as a visitor.

I joined a small group of smart folks in NC to envision how we could use the emotive power of light and color to communicate these thoughts through the typically underused bedside lamp.

After conducting user research, we iterated through concepts and prototyped the light with our outstanding partner Nexus Interactive Arts. It creates generative displays of light and color based on messages it receives - whether they are social posts, texts or pictures. The prototype leveraged LEDs, a 3D printed shell, a Raspberry Pi logic board, and teensy PSU and LED driver.

It is not invasive, brings variety and vibrance to a sterile place and creates a special connection between patients and their loved ones with subtle, ever-changing patterns of color and light. This was an exciting project to be a part of.

GE 2012 Olympics

Brand:GE Healthcare Role: Executive Producer Awards: Webby Winner (Sports) FWA Mobile Site of the Day

The Pulse of the Games was a 17-day integrated campaign for GE Healthcare's 2012 London Olympics sponsorship showcasing the incredible feats of the human body.

Over 116 pieces of content were created and served up intelligently based on the Olympics' airing schedule along with useful tools like visualizations of Olympics history and nearby healthy activities. 

The goal was to be everywhere the viewer was with truly useful and entertaining content. The full experience was on the tablet, smart phone, NBC and ESPN Olympics websites and served through rich ads even in basic 40k media display ad buys.

For the first time viewers watched the Olympics on the internet. This was a first of its kind experience.

CineMama iPhone app

Brand: March of Dimes Role: Executive Producer

Women can create a time-lapse video of their pregnancy – and get health tips along the way – through a new iPhone app called CineMama available from the March of Dimes.

CineMama turns belly photos into a time-lapse video of a mom's pregnancy. Editing tools are accompanied by a pregnancy journal and companion website for bringing friends and family into the process.

By celebrating each milestone and the full growth of their belly and child, moms were encouraged to let labor begin on its own instead of rushing through their last few weeks with a pre-planned birth.

Snickers.com Redesign

Brand: Snickers Role: Executive Producer Awards: FWA Site of the Day Addy - District silver (digital) 

Snickers wanted their website to represent the products well and to reflect their social presences without having to make costly regular updates.

The new website was designed with big - almost ridiculously big - strokes that worked well with the brand tone. It uses a modular content layout that displays curated user-generated and snickers-created content from around the web in one place. The site was built with internationalization in mind. It has been live for over three years.

M&M’S + Habitat for Humanity 

Brand: M&M'S Role: Executive Producer

M'Prove America was a partnership with Habitat for Humanity that encouraged facebookers to turn the time they spend on Facebook into housing for people in need.

Once a user connects, it breaks down their time spent on Facebook and details how time translates into Habitat for Humanity projects (eg. 7 hours and 15 volunteers can winterize a house) including the ability to pledge time for local projects.

M&M'S REDESIGN

Brand: M&M'S Role: Executive Producer

After half a decade with the same flash-based website, the M&M'S website no longer reflected the colorful, chocolate fun and high standard of the brand. In addition, updates were costly and time consuming.

The redesign - done on a tight budget - features larger than life characters and product imagery with fun character-based touches throughout the site and easy XML-based updates.

The site is being rolled out globally.

BETTER WITH M&M'S

Brand: M&M'S Role: Executive Producer

M&M'S' major integrated campaign of 2013 reflects a new brand strategy that things are 'better with M&M'S'. An evergreen website - http://www.betterwithmms.com - was created to aggregate and showcase content from around the web related to the campaign.  

Campaign elements were rolled out throughout the year to support the positioning including a website, social media takeovers, digital media, TV spots, and a promotion.

Personalized M&M’s App

Brand: M&M’S Role: Executive Producer Year: 2010 

MyM&M’s is a service from Mars that lets users order M&M’s with custom imagery printed on them. Mars wanted to expand their market.

We created an app in 2010 that made it easy to put your pictures from Facebook on M&M’s and get them delivered to your door by connecting with Mars and Facebook web services. Everyone seemed to agree that the results were tasty.

Nike Training Platform

Brand: Nike Role: Senior Producer I led athletic training and localization infrastructure while at R/GA. Nike SPARQ training was web-based software that leveraged data captured at athletic testing events to help high school athletes understand their performance. It was a major endeavor that addressed tough questions about how to create meaningful, personalized fitness data.

SPARQ Training was a company purchased by Nike to become the 'SAT of high school athletics'. SPARQ is a testing protocol and training system for building exceptional high school athletes and, ultimately, for helping athletes be their best.

Similar to Football Combines, SPARQ tests athletes with sport-specific drills, collecting data on the field in order to provide performance breakdowns to athletes. With testing data in hand, five key areas are targeted in different ways for improvement based on the user: speed, power, agility, reaction, and quickness. 

We visualized the data and created an experience for athletes and their coaches to track improvement, conduct self-assessments, suggest training plans and compare to other athletes.

This was a complex application because it delivers very different experiences to three users - trainers, athletes, and parents - and it does it for six different sports each with its own unique data sets. 

SPARQ eventually led to measuring athletic performance more generically in the form of Nike+ FUEL.

Nike Pro Website

Brand: Nike Role: Sr. Producer Year:2008

Nike introduced its answer to Under Armour in 2008. The Nike Pro Baselayer line was of a much higher quality than Under Armour with attention paid to critical details that make the difference for athletes. 

The product website needed to reflect that quality and to highlight every aspect of the product that differentiated it from Under Armour. 

The user was able to explore the garment's features through 360 degree interactive videos. We shot the photography with models and completed the experience in flash. 

Additionally, we created video content with Nike Athletes across all sports to demonstrate its use in a variety of conditions.

Nike Soccer Bootfinder

Brand: Nike Role: Senior Producer Year: 2008 

Nike Football (Soccer for the USA) wanted an intelligent product selector to recommend boots to athletes based on their preferences. 

Leveraging data about the products and the athletes that Nike sponsors, we created the Nike Bootfinder. 

Using a progressive disclosure design pattern allowed for simplicity and a bold, somewhat abstract visual design approach where each step was given special attention from the look and feel of material to the terrain details.

The result is a beautiful, easy to use and truly useful product feature that was eventually rolled out globally and adapted on multiple platforms, on the web, tablet and in store.

Cooks Illustrated Redesign

Brand: Cooks Illustrated Role: Producer Year: 2007  

The publishing industry was a confusing place to be in 2007. Cooks Illustrated, the company behind a highly successful niche cooking magazine and television show (America's Test Kitchen) was failing on the web. Their web experience in no way reflected the clear presentation of information and engaging content of their other properties. Additionally, the financial model was not web-friendly. Like many publishers, they had put a paywall in front of all content. Users simply chose to leave in favor of sites like Epicurious.

We brought Cooks Illustrated through significant user research, content audit, competitive research and user experience design exercises to finally end up with a web property that represented the unique style of Cooks Illustrated and was engaging for users.

Clear navigation patterns, a balanced approach to the paywall, and a more reasonable pay-for-content model were the hallmarks of this redesign.

This site design was live for over five years, demonstrating the value of thoughtful interaction design to drive business results.
