For the first year of her employment at the Ministry, Cece had been more or less alone. She had family friends, knew people who knew people who worked in offices near her, but for an 18-year-old new graduate, she couldnât have been more lonely. So, when Marcus, one of her nearest and dearest friends from school, told her that heâd be coming to work at the Ministry, Cece was delighted. On his first day, she made sure to drop by his new desk, and steal him away for drinks after work. Since then, sheâd come by as often as she could, without shirking her work, and it had become a ritual ever since.
âCornered me on my way in. Heâs not the bad sort, but a bloody bore.â Cressida took a long, indulgent sip of the drink sheâd stolen, and made a face at Marcus. âOh, thatâs nice! Whereâd you learn to talk to a lady, Care of Magical Creatures class?â She playfully batted at his arm, and took another sip. âOne would almost assume you didnât like me, McKinnon. And after all these years, too.â The two slipped into a lesser populated area of the room, gratefully, out of sight of the man who had already monopolized so much of her time. âBosses invited me; couldnât blow it off, it would look impolite. Besides,â Cressida hesitated, adjusting her robes again, âitâs not the worst place I could be, is it? Iâve found a friend in the room, havenât I? What about you? Peer pressured into it?â
One of his favourite things about working for the Ministry of Magic was the close proximity to his friends. Cece, Frank, Alice and Amos, all together, only separated by a few floors each, under the same roof. He would speak to them nearly everyday, send memos that he probably shouldnât and be stolen and steal others for drinks and lunch during the day and after work. When Cece had turned up at his office on his first day to steal him away, it had become a ritual and one that he enjoyed immensely ever since. Whenever he saw her head peek around his door, her cheeky smile telling him that whatever plans she had he couldnât say no to, his heart skipped a beat and he knew he was an idiot. He liked his best friend, more so than he should, but he always had and as Frank said, his denial was his most powerful trait. âAre you kidding me, we work at the Ministry of Magic, everyone is a bad sortâ he smirked, before winking at her and holding his fresh drink at a height that she couldnât reach, just to wind her up, since she was still sipping his last one. no doubt she would try to take this one as well, just to irritate him. âYou know that I failed that class Cressida, it is a source of great pain and I canât believe you would bring it upâ he said, pretending to get choked up on the last word, but he couldnât keep a straight face for long enough.Â
âOn the contrary, I like you very much. Youâre my closest friendâ he added, quickly, âand I am only an arse to my closest friendsâ he continued, before taking a sip of his whiskey. As they reached a less populated area, he moved to lean against the wall, taking some of the weight off of his leg. âYour bosses suck, you should get new onesâ he commented, offhandedly, before reaching out and batting away the hand that was playing with her robes, readjusting them constantly. âYou look beautiful, stop playing with your clothesâ he said, âanyway, I can thing of much better places that I could be right now, friend or no friendâ he smirked. âPretty much, I have been told that as a leader it is important for me to make appearances and represent my departmentâ he said, rolling his eyes. âI think Iâm going to give it fifteen minutes and sneak out for some decent food. You in?â

xalice-clara:
Alice was relieved when she could finally get back to work after getting released from the hospital. Getting back into her routine was a comfort, it all made it easier to get back to what was normal, and put everything behind her. While she was annoyed with her mandatory desk duty until she was fully cleared for combat, she was grateful to no longer be sitting in a hospital bed or at home.
She had learned to start accepting the quiet time, especially with the ring now sitting on her finger. If she was going to marry Frank, she needed to become far less reckless than she had been before, even with him being her partner. As she thought about it, she realized how lucky they were to have been paired together, to be given a real chance at what they were lucky enough to have.
And so she threw herself back into her work, making sure that she was keeping up on strategy theory while she was not cleared for combat sparring. Hearing someone say her name, she looked up from her reading, her eyes going wide as she recognized the face looking in towards her desk. âMarcus? Oh, merlin, Marcus!â Jumping up from her desk chair and pushing it aside, she bounded up to him and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. âThank merlin youâre alright!â
A rush of emotions ran through her as she pulled back from the hug and looked at the man who was like her brother. Slapping his arm, she scowled up at him. âWhere the bloody hell have you been, McKinnon?â
She jumped up from her desk and into his arms, hugging him tightly and he sighed in relief, hugging her back. Alice had been one of those people over the years who he had grown close too, learned to rely upon and hated when he let her down, so the fact that she was hugging him instead of punching or yelling at him was a good sign in his mind. âOf course Iâm alright, I can take care of myself you knowâ he said, chuckling slightly. He pulled away and looked at her, despite the war and the panic and the worry, she looked good and she figured Frank had something to do with that.
When she slapped his arm, he recoiled a little, more dramatically than he needed too. âI was - ouch, Alice - I was in America. An old friend let me crash with him for a while whilst I got my head on straightâ he said, running a hand through his hair. There was no right way to answer her question, and he was sure she would have more of them, so he gestured for her to sit back down so he could take the other seat in the office and rest his leg. âI know I worried you, and everyone else, and I am sorry about that. I will tell you everything but first you have to answer me one question, okay?â
He smirked, âhow does it feel to be engaged to Frank?â
katrinaxparkinson:
Diagon Alley was always running rampant with activity. Whether it be excitable children chattering with anticipation or adults on their way in or out of work, there was never a quiet moment. Even in the night hours, when stores were closing and the atmosphere was meant to be stilled, people could be found about, even if only coming in and out of the Leaky Cauldron.Â
Tonight however, with the sun hanging low in the sky and releasing golden pink streaks throughout the sky, the beloved alley was filled with nothing but activity. A party seemed like one of the last things that could be necessary, given the state of things. But perhaps that was why it was necessary; a distraction, if nothing else. Even if it was falsified by everyone running about.Â
With her hand wrapped numbly around a champagne flute, bubbly liquid barely having been touched, Katrina had found solace sitting on the ivory steps to Gringotts. In truth it wasnât any less crowded, but even the slightest lessening of people was enough. The alcohol in her grasp was weak, but not at all desired. Long nights in a forgotten home around her mother and father had reminded her of that. At the arrival of someone new, sitting close but not too close, dark eyes lifted from where they stared absently. âOh, Marcus, hello. Enjoying the festivities?â
{ @marcus-mck-innon }
He had left the Selwyn Ball, but would undoubtedly return within the next few hours. When his family and work pulled him in one direction and his friends and the Order pulled him in another, he found himself hopping from party party in order to keep everyone happy. So far, he had accomplished making everyone happy but himself, as his leg was protesting the constant apparation. The Selwynâs ball was elegant and fancy, beautiful in a sophisticated way, whereas Diagon Alley screamed with colours and excitement. Two very different atmosphereâs for two very different groups of their wizarding world society.
Making his way through the crowd, he found himself bumped several times and with a bottle of butterbeer warming in his left hand and his cane held firmly in his right, he looked around for somewhere to sit and rest for a moment. He took a breath as if preparing himself, before he headed towards the steps of Gringotts, as they were the emptiest of places that he could see around him. Dodging and weaving, he thought that at least the people at Selwyn Ball didnât run into him, and finally he made it to the steps, climbed up two of them and sat down with a sigh of relief. He knew someone was sitting near to him, though not too near, but he hadnât thought to try and recognise them - until they spoke.
âKatrina?â he asked, turning slightly and pushing a smile onto his face. âSorry, I didnât notice you there. Yes... yes, Iâm enjoying the festivitiesâ he said, entirely unconvincingly. âAnd yourself?â he asked, taking a swig of his butterbeer, eyeing the flute of champagne in her hand that had barely been touched.

andromedaxunchained:
Dora had been left with the Weasleys so that Andromeda could do her chores without constantly looking over her shoulder. As the war progressed, and Andromeda grew more worried, Diagon Alley grew gloomier and that atmosphere affected Andromedaâs attitude. It was better for Dora to have some time with her friends, and the Weasleys in particular, who never seemed to be upset for very long. It was easier to accomplish her errands without Doraâs incessant chattering as well, but as much as Andromeda enjoyed the relative quiet, she did miss hearing her daughter.Â
But she had several more errands to finish before she went home - a few potions ingredients, and Dora needed a new hairbrush, and there were other odds and ends she had to pick up as well. Diagon Alley was more crowded than she thought it would be and her temper picked up as she had to push her way through the people around her. When she heard her voice, she felt a stab of fear before she realized she recognized the speaker. But she couldnât believe it - sheâd thought Marcus was gone. She hadnât known what had happened to him - she had spent weeks worrying about him, trying to answer Doraâs questions, and now -
âWhere the fuck have you been, Marcus McKinnon?â Pushing through the crowd, she grabbed his arm and yanked him several feet to the side, out of the way of most passersby. âYou just vanished - why would you do that to us? Do you know what Doraâs been asking me? For weeks - of all the fucking -â She had to take a step back, afraid that sheâd follow up on the temptation to slap him and that wouldnât be right. âOh my god - what the hell happened to you?â Worry battled through, mixing with her anger as she took in his appearance, the crutch and the general aura of weariness that accompanied him now.
He hadnât bumped into a single person since he had returned who wasnât mad at the fact that he had left so abruptly, without warning or a word until a week had passed by. He had know what he had done was irresponsible and quite possibly selfish, especially in a time of war, but at the time he hadnât been thinking straight. The look on Andromedaâs face made him want to cower, even though in height he towered above her, she was still a Black and as terrifying as her sister - though he would never say that to her face. She thought for a moment that she was going to smack him, which he would have deserved, but instead she dragged him through the crowd and to the side, away from passers by.Â
âI am sorry that I worried you and I am sorry that I upset Nymphadora, that was never my intention Andy. You know I love that little girl, I would never do anything to purposely hurt herâ he said, regaining his balance a little after being dragged, placing his walking stick firmly on the floor to prop him up. âI needed to leave - I made a deal with the devil, I screwed up big time and I had to get my head on straight. I went to the States, to stay with Ryan Danvers - he was the Hufflepuff who idolised Tedâ he said, quickly. Ryan hadnât been his best friend, but he had always had weird obsessions with students at Hogwarts and would be willing to do anything for them. Marcus had befriended him and the month with the other man and his wife had not been completely horrible.
He looked down at the crutch and up to her face and was pretty sure, as she was a healer and he had not gone to her for help, that she was going to slap him senseless. He loved Andromeda Tonks - but he was also scared shitless of her. âAn old injury... that didnât heal correctly, is starting to play me up. Iâm having some trouble standing up or walking for long periods of timeâ he said, averting his gaze to the floor and whispering. âI had a fight with a Deatheater, it didnât end well for me and I was embarrassed so I didnât get myself looked at and basically thisâ he tapped his leg with his crutch, âis all my own faultâ.
â: Sharing a dessert
The American style diner had been a surprisingly cool find on his way home from work, several weeks previous. As the sun had been shinning outside, he had decided to apparate near to his home and stretch his legs by walking the rest of the day, when he had walked past the diner. He had gone back later than evening and ever since, everything Friday night he visited the diner for his usual order - burger, curly friends, chocolate milkshake and an ice cream sundae.
That Friday was different however, as he had invited his sister to join him. He hadnât seen her in a few weeks and wanted to make sure she was doing okay, as well as introduce her to the amazing food that he had found. Whether she was sold on the burgers or not, he wasnât sure, but as they shared an ice cream sundae, he knew she had been converted.
âI told you youâd like itâ he grinned, âalthough, seeing that expression on my sisterâs face is a little disturbingâ.
He pushed his spoon back into the ice cream as he spoke, attempting to take a chunk as her spoon came out of nowhere and started hitting his own, attempting to swat it away. The clinking utensils turned a few heads, as did their giggling.
âShare, Marleneâ.
âStick to your side Marcusâ she replied, poking out her tongue at him.
âOh there are sides now?â he asked.
She smirked at him, âthere are always sides in warâ and with that statement, she shovelled a spoonful of chocolate ice cream into her mouth.
âGood thing weâre on the same side, thenâ.

cressidanott:
Even for the Ministryâs semi-frequent interdepartmental galas, this evening promised to be both bleak and tiresome. Of course, it wasnât so bad, to get dressed up, to observe and be observed, as long as Cressida had a few of her Ministry friends, like Nat, by her side. But, on a day as excruciatingly long as this one had beenâ with piece after piece of correspondence to be translated, and not even a decent piece of legislation, or anything interesting to break the streamâ her head swum with words and letters and numbers, and it made this gathering even more difficult. And yet, Cressida knew that her absence would be noted, as her colleagues at the Ministry were unlikely to forget a slight; not attending would be more trouble than getting the thing over with.
To make matters worse, Cressida had only been in the room a few scant momentsâ not even enough time to get a drink from one of the many house elves drifting through the roomâ when she was cornered by a co-worker whoâd clearly had more of a chance at the provided refreshments than she did. With the confidence of a man a firewhiskey-and-a-half in, he engaged her in a one-sided conversation about just how critical the Department of Magical Transportation was, and have you ever wondered how you donât bump into someone while apparating? Thatâs the impact of the âD of MTâ! Absently, Cressida wondered just how many times this speech had been rehearsed and subsequently recited to other helpless victims. Yet, like her father always said, one never knows who one may call upon later, so she listened, and nodded, interjecting the odd oh yes or I agree every so often, and it seemed to satisfy him; now if only he could see fit to wrap it up.
The man before her was just launching into a debate on the convenience of Apparation versus the universality of the Portkeyâ a hotly contested topic, in these circles, you knowâ and Cece was just trying to recall a charm from her youth, a boy in her Arithmancy class used it to âcatch the fluâ when exam day came around, as a last resort, when she felt a warm hand on her back, and a familiar voice by her ear. Repressing a grin, she murmured apologetically to her new acquaintance, whose name she didnât remember getting, before being ushered away by one Marcus McKinnon. âThank you,â she breathed, clutching Marcusâs arm. âTwenty minutes, and he kept going on.â With a quick movement of her hand, and an easy smile, Cece plucked the new glass from his hand. âIs this for me? Trust me, I need it.â
As he steered her away, he smirked to himself after catching a glance of the look on the guy who he had stolen her fromâs face. He was clearly taken aback and irritated that Marcus had been able to come along and whisk Cressida away, but whether she knew it or not, the guy had been attempting to flirt and both he and the guy knew that she could do better. He had known her for many years, since the days when their parents hosted parties together, to sitting together in classes at Hogwarts to stealing each other for coffee breaks without permission. She was one of his oldest and closest friends and though he suspected everyone nowadays of perhaps not being on the same side as he was, he couldnât bring himself to indulge the idea that she would, so he forced himself into a state of denial and kept himself there.
âYouâre welcomeâ he murmured as she clutched his arm. âHow did you get talking to that creep?â he asked, curiously, a smirk of amusement on his face as he looked down at her. When she grabbed the drink from his hand sighed and shook his head, âItâs yours now, I didnât want it after your germs have been all over itâ he said, making a soft retching noise, as a joke, though he knew it would wind her up a little. The look on her face when she pretended to be offended by anything he did was priceless, it only served to amuse him. As a house elf walked past with a tray of drinks, he took one with a hastily muttered thank you and continued walking with Cece until they were on the other side of the room, out of most direct eye lines of sight. He took a sip of his own before she had the chance to steal this one as well. âSo, how did they manage to rope you into this... âpartyâ?â

&& rooftop escape
The biggest mistake he had made that day was the decision to climb the stairs to Amos's roof garden. Having knocked on the door and found the apartment empty, he had known that the most likely place for Amos to be was the roof, especially since it was his day off and Cedric could play safely there. He climbed his way to the bottom of thr set of stairs below the roof when he had needed to stop, grip the handrail for a moment and begrudgingly conjure his walking stick to help him up the last flight. Every time he had to lean on it, he felt like an old man on his way out of life, not a young man in his prime as he should have been. Opening the door to the roof, he remembered the night Amos had found him, the blood Marcus had scrubbed from the building walls, the pain he had been in and realised that perhaps he was lucky that he could still walk at all. Blasted with cool wind, he took in a deep breath before he closed the door firmly behind him, jumping slightly when he heard his name screamed from the other side of the roof and turned back with a smile on his face. "Uncle Marcus". He would neevr get used to be referred to as such, but he liked it. Cedric had spotted him entering the garden before Amos had. He looked around at the space that Amos had created, the little slice of nature and wildlife in the middle of a busy urban city and smiled. One of the reasons he enjoyed going to his childhood home to see his parents so much was that he was able to spend the dry, sunny days out in the garden. He half limped further into the garden, ruffling Cedric's hair as he passed him, making his way toward Amos who had looked up at Cedeic's call and was watching Marcus move towards him. Would he be as mad as the others with his disappearance? There was only one way for him to find out. "Hey Amos". [ @amxsdxggory ]
&& tolerance drinking
He had been forced by his extremely pushy mother, and his pushover of a father, to attend another high society, pureblood gathering that had him faking smiles for people he didn't care about and trying desperately not to roll his eyes in irritation. Before the war, before he had joined the Order and pledged himself to the fight for equal status between muggleborns and purebloods, he hadn't noticed the the ignorant comments being casually tossed around. At that moment, as he made his way towards the bar to grab a glass (or several glasses) of whiskey, it was all that he was able to hear. The words rang in his ears, stoking the fire of rage inside him and he knew if he was going to make it through the party without making a comment, he needed alcohol. Most would find it odd that alcohol helped with the firm tightness of his zipped lip, but he found that as the alcohol swam through his veins, it helped with his tolerance level when interacting with pureblood supremacists. As he reached the beverages and ordered a large glass of whiskey, he overheard another comment on muggleborns and their inability to use magic properly, took a deep breath and took his ordered whiskey from the server. "Please tell me you have an unlimited supply of this?" he asked, only half joking, unaware of the person standing next him, listening to his comments. He threw the liquid down his neck and handed the glass back, "another". [ @cassandraburke ]

little-marlene:
Marlene loved her family, she honestly, truly, loved them. That didnât stop the wave of anxiety from washing over her when she stepped into the house only to be met with the sound of her parents yelling upstairs. For as much as their children had rejected the pureblood mentality of being supreme to others, their parents still seemed inexplicably tied to the traditions other families abode by. It made their relationship tense and was a major reason their youngest daughter tended to keep her distance from the house. Despite it all, she stood there, dirty boots, ripped jeans, leather jacket and all. Just when she was going to turn back around and leave, as if she had never been their to begin with, her attention was turned to Marcus coming down the stairs.Â
Immediately, she was smiling and returned his tight embrace, keeping a hand on his arm even when he drew back. While Marcus was looking her over, Marlene was doing the exact same, her brow furrowing from the way heâd struggled down the stairs and had to limp towards her. It wasnât the brother sheâd known growing up though, she supposed, the same could be said for most people these days. Times were changing and dragging people mercilessly along with them. With a scoff, she waved off his apology and took his hand in hers, tugging him towards the garden. âDonât be silly, you know you havenât a thing to apologize to me for. Itâs been too long, the first thing you say shouldnât be a sorry.âÂ
âThey still tryinâ to marry you off? I canât say I envy you.â She chimed, taking a deep breath when they stepped out into the garden. Most of her meant it, but there as always the nagging voice in the back of her head reminding her they were arguing over Marcusâ future, Marcusâ family, Marcusâ life. As if they hadnât had twins after all. Turning her head to look back at her brother, she grinned. âYâknow, if you just eloped, theyâd have nothinâ left to argue about. I could find you someone, a right pretty bird for you to run away with.â Then, she paused before snickering. âItâd just be a small fee, a few galleons for your happily ever after.â
He could tell from the look in her eyes that they were scanning him for the exact same reasons he was scanning her and had to stop himself from smiling. They had always been in sync, watching out for one another, caring about each other in a way that no-one, not even and especially not their parents, could or would ever understand. He wished for a moment that he had his walking stick to lean on but told himself firmly to suck it up because the more he relied on that infernal thing, the longer his body would take to heal properly. He sighed, âI know, but you were pulled out of that hell hole for just over a week before I took off on you, that was not very sibling like of me, so please accept my apology or I will give you the puppy dog eyes and you know you canât resist thoseâ he teased, nudging her gently as she took his hand and gently pulled him in the direction of the garden.Â
Stepping outside, old memories flooded back, the summers he and Marlene spending running around outside, playing Quidditch, hiding from their parents at the end of the night so that they didnât have to come inside, having their friends over during the holidays. He took a deep breath and continued to walk hand in hand with her into the garden. âWell, father is less inclined to marry me off than he was before the war started, but mother is still insistent and stubborn. Donât think youâve gotten away with anything Marls, your name slipped in and once they have found a match for me, theyâll move straight on to youâ he said, pulling a face. He knew Marlene would hate that more than anything, probably mostly because she was being dictated too by their mother. The mother who had always seemed to favour Marcus, hurting Marlene more than she would ever admit to him and frustrating him.Â
âYou could find me a wife? Okay, tell you what, if you can find a wife whom I like and can hold a conversation with, who is also a Pureblood because we need to appease the dragons inside that house, I will empty out my vault at Gringotts for youâ he said, rolling his eyes at her. He didnât want to marry anyone, marriage had never been something he saw himself doing and the more it was pushed at him, the less he wanted to even consider it as a future possibility. He shook his head, âhow are you Marls, seriously, after everything youâve been through?â he asked, tugging her together the âmazeâ that was simply several rows of hedges that could be hidden behind, as they had hidden there as children, infuriating their mother. It also had a nice bench inside and his leg was starting to ache.Â
&& small and scary
No questions had been asked when he had turned up in the living room of his god-brothersâ house in the United States, looking like he had been dragged through hell backwards and asking for a place to stay whilst he sorted himself out. His head had been in such a mess over his completely idiotic deal with a Deatheater, he hadnât even thought about saying goodbye to those who he had left behind and only sent a note a week after he had left.
Since coming back to London, Marlene had told him he had nothing to apologise for and Frank had had very mixed feelings about Marcusâs absence and return, but had ultimately forgive him as he had been too excited to tell Marcus that he had gotten engaged. He had known it would happen, sooner or later, Frank and Alice were meant for each other and everyone with a pair of eyes and a functioning brain could see it. Now, he had to see Alice.
He was assuming that her reaction would be much like Frankâs had been, relief filled with anger filled with a lot of guilting Marcus into expressing multiple apologies. Having finished up a case for the afternoon, he had slipped out of his office before anyone could have the chance to give him more work and headed to the Auror Headquarters down on level one. When he arrived, he weaved through Aurors who were scrambling all over the corridor, rushing around like they were being timed on how long they took to run from one cubicle to the next.
He finally reached Aliceâs cubicle and poked his head around the door, only half noticing the small figure of his friend behind a desk full of paperwork. He cleared his throat, âAlice?â

â letâs just kiss already. â ~ Cressida
For years, he and Cressida had danced around each other, playing the friendship card, refusing to admit that there was any sort of chemistry between them. They were friends, good friends and that was how it was supposed to stay however lately, things had taken a weird turn. Near misses and casual, sexually charged comments murmured to each other in an attempt to drive the other crazy had finally come to a head.
Before she had even finished her sentence, his lips were pressed against hers, his body pushing hers until her back pressed up against the wall. One hand moving up into her hair whilst the other remained firmly on her lip, his lips moved firmly against her own, tasting the chapstick she wore, groaning softly when he felt her teeth tug on his bottom lip.Â
âFuck Cressidaâ he breathed as they broke apart, the need for oxygen overwhelming. âShould we have done that?â The only response he was given was her lips pressing back against his own. It was never spoken, but he took that to mean yes.

He hand gently grazed the side of her hip, thumb gently moving over the sheer fabric of the dress she wore. He felt her shiver as she spoke the words, so quietly he almost missed them and he wondered for a moment if she had meant to say them out loud at all. He leaned in a little and whispered, âis that a written down rule somewhere, or are you trying to talk yourself out of wanting to kiss me?â he smirked, lowering his head so that his lips brushed against her jaw line, âyou know what they say - rules are made to be brokenâ.

&& the little things
As a child, Marcus compared Diagon Alley to Wonderland and even though he was born into the wizarding world, he still felt like Alice had when she had fallen down the rabbit hole. It had been the most magical place he had set foot in, until he had arrived at Hogwarts of course and every time his parents had taken him and Marlene shopping with them, he had savoured every moment, wide, young eyes absorbing as much as he could before, inevitably, it was time to leave.
As the war worsened, Diagon Alley lost itâs magical glow, the warm, welcoming feeling of stepping into Wonderland had disappeared and was replaced by bordered up shops, almost completely empty cobblestones and eerie silences. He half expected to see tumbleweed roll across his feet. As he walked, half limped, down the street towards Gringotts, he felt a twinge of sadness as he observed witches and wizards running hastily from store to store, barely making eye contact and never stopping to make conversation.Â
As he neared the bottom of the steps leading up to Gringotts, he spotted a familiar mane of tangled, deep brown hair, gliding around a pair of womenâs shoulders, several paces ahead of him. âAndromeda?â he called, quickening his pace to catch up.
