ââHIS EXPRESSION TOLD all as far as nicola went. the mere mention of her name sent something related to a shiver up the base of kaiâs spine - and not in the way nicola would have liked, he imagined. wife two of three âsheâd spin the yarn to make anyone believe that kai was some self-absorbed monster ( he was, a bit ) that was only interested in work and had done nothing but neglect her, save to put two children inside of her. part of it was true ⊠work would always be a top priority of his, and he had two children with her, but her own version of manipulation and deceit was spun solely for pity points. sheâd tried to rake him over the coals, her plan to wed and divorce him for half of his estate ( or more ) failed horribly because of his penchant for prenuptial agreements. kai crawford was no idiot, among the many things he did tend to be.
so he accepted the glass of scotch from wife three of three âthe one that he believed to be it, and offered her a genuine smile ( for as small at it was ). he wasnât the most expressive man, one needed to pay mind to his words and his body language to glean any sense of FEELING from what he intended, but margot seemed to be well-versed in that silent speech. still, the sneer that nicolaâs name brought - the bitterness swallowed down with a long draw from the scotch - was palpable. heavily visible, even. â i didnât realize that she was even considered as an invitation. â
the doing of his children, no doubt. so much was confirmed with margotâs explanation and he nodded as he rest the glass on his knee, fingers tracing the rim absently. â iâd rather swallow broken glass than see her, if thatâs any indication of an answer. â so he sighed, turned his body more amicably toward his better half and nodded in agreement, â iâll talk to them. they know better than to press the issue with me, iâd hoped they knew better than to try with you. consider it dealt with. â AND THAT WAS THAT.
â tell me about what you have planned. color schemes, anyone i need to be behaved around. â as if he ever was less than perfect before company. it was a means to keep her talking âhe liked the sound of her voice, the drawl of her accent and the way it curled delicately around words he wouldnât suspect. he settled when he was closer to her, shoulders brushing each time he inhaled, and took another swallow of scotch.
Margot was fluent in the art of reading Kai. A skill sheâd acquired throughout the entire time theyâd been together. Every look, every move... she could see what everyone else couldnât: the things that were left unsaid, and she liked to believe it was the same for him. So when she caught sight of the sour look resting upon his face, she couldnât help but smirk. At least she wasnât the only one who felt sick when the scorned ex wife was brought up. Truthfully she felt sorry that her husband still had to deal with such a nuisance. Move the fuck on, Nicola.
âThatâs what I said, but they think since sheâs their mother and has no plans that she should join us, but no. No fucking way.â She was glad that she was often on the same wavelength as Kai, one of the reasons they went so well together. Thereâd been a time just short of a year prior that Margot had somewhat of a spat with Nicola, entirely provoked by the unflattering names that had been thrown in her direction. GOLD DIGGING BITCH being one of them.
Iâd rather swallow broken glass. Now that broke the brunetteâs poker face, chuckling a little at the manâs shameless nonchalance to the situation. She could always count on him. âWe canât have that then, darling. And thank you, I really appreciate it. Iâm really trying with the kids, and theyâre not budging. Itâs been years and theyâre still not warming up to me.â Not that she particularly cared if her step children werenât fond of her, but for Kai, she was willing to try.
âThe decorations are silver and white, Iâve been feeling like red decorations can be a little overdone, donât you think? I prefer subtle, but beautiful.â As she spoke, her hands moving rapidly with each word -- a habit of hers when she was clearly passionate about something.
Taking a sip of her scotch, welcoming the burn at the back of her throat, she gazed up at Kai, an adoring smile tugging at her lips. âYouâre always well behaved, but your boss and his wife will be here ââ they RSVPâd last minute, I think their Italian vacation had to be cancelled, so theyâll stay in New York over the holidays.â
There was nothing Margot enjoyed more than to throw a lavish party, the life she led now was far different to the one she had in Australia. Her family didnât have much, and now she felt like she was making up for it. They both worked hard, they deserved everything they had, and she always made sure to look after her parents back home. Aside from Kai, they were two of the people that meant the most to her.
âIâm still deciding what I should wear. Itâs between the silver Versace dress or the red Dior dress. Which would you prefer to be standing next to, hm?â Not that she thought heâd actually care about what sheâd be adorned in, but she liked to give him the option, especially when it came to what he would be wearing. There was no way their color palette could clash.
