A lot of people act like this attack was nothing and it was a failure. It did exactly what it was intended to do, sow terror and fear amongst people. Maimed people and took their legs.

During the early morning hours of 29 May, 1985, Richard Ramirez broke into the Monrovia home of 83-year-old Mabel Bell and her invalid sister, 81-year-old Florence Lang. Once inside, he armed himself with a hammer he had found in the kitchen and bound and bludgeoned Florence before turning his attention on Mabel. He bound and bludgeoned her too before electrically shocking the both of them with an electrical cord. Before leaving, he raped Florence and drew a pentagram on her thigh, as well as one on the wall, with her lipstick. Miraculously, Florence survived but Mabel passed away from her injuries six weeks after the brutal attack.

Mabel and Florence had lived in their modest home for 25 years. The house, which was framed with roses and white picket fence, was above the San Gabriel Valley on a lonely and secluded road. They liked the isolation but their family often worried about them. Mabel had taken Florence in because she didn’t want her to be institutionalised due to her disabilities. Mabel had 12 grandchildren and put two of them through college - she was described as a “warm and caring person” by her son.

On June 12, 1996, Nicole Brown Simpson was found dead in front of her townhome, with her friend Ron Goldman dead inside. Friends and family say she was trying to build a new life for herself after her 1992 divorce from O.J. Simpson. The two were married for 18 years. 

O.J. Simpson was of course the main suspect. Previously in their marriage, he had plead no contest to spousal battery, but friends say she was entirely devoted to her husband during their marriage. 

Nicole was found with multiple stab wounds in her head and neck, and defensive wounds on her arms. She was nearly beheaded. 

In the aftermath of her murder, O.J. was described as a person of interest. He would not cooperate with police however, and this lead to the infamous Bronco low speed chase. The case progressed, however, and despite much evidence, including both Nicole and Ron’s blood inside the Bronco, O.J. was found not guilty.
