❝ yeah, you better believe he did ! caught some fine fish, that day, ‘fore the goddamn pinkertons decided to ruin it for us. abigail suggested we go. think she got kinda scared you’d SPOOK the kid, but, hey, it ain’t lookin’ half as bad, after all, wolf man ! kinda adds to your charms, really. ❞ a bright GRIN that swiftly turns into laughter at the tease, warm coffee brought to his lips as he listens & gives a few nods of his head in agreement. ❝ inbred fucks’d have any idea who they’re dealin’ with, they’d be shittin’ their pants, right now. an’ if hosea’s cookin’ up a plan, we needa get ourselves front - row seats, marston. like in the good ol’ days. ‘cause this crowd here’s right up his alley ! ❞
‘ yeah, ’ marston nodded, ‘ he’s got a talent for that sort’a thing. ’ john made for the shoreline, with a smoothed, black stone in hand. ‘ better it be hosea than dutch. feel like he’s got a better sense’a things, y’know ? ’ he brushed his calloused thumb over the stone’s face, and threw it over the lake. it hit once, twice, before it sank helplessly beneath the waterline. ‘ dutch… dutch’s got his own problems, right now. he’ll see to ‘em, a’course… but it’s better that some of that weight’s off’a his shoulders. ’ john half-laughed, raspily, to himself. ‘ i’m just glad it ain’t me. ’
* derlinde .
and that was the beauty of it ————————— here was a town so full to the brim with scum of all kinds that they weren’t even the worst of them anymore . they could remain off the radar , with a little bit of careful planning ; AND WITH EVERYONE IN THE GANG ON THE SAME PAGE .
❝ fools are exactly what they are . that sheriff hired me without a second thought ; the man’s lacking a brain entirely ! we got a perfect opportunity here , s’long as we don’t blow it . ❞
marston found himself a seat atop an upturned box, lacing his dirtied fingers through each other. he shook his head. ‘ knowin’ our record for makin’ wrong decisions... i don’t fancy our odds all too much, dutch. ’ reconsidering his posit, john regressed to the more comfortable route of complacency. ‘ i don’t know... maybe i’m just worried, is all. ’
* redeampt .
❝ well, i sure am glad to hear it, ‘cause at some point, that wasn’t any more CLEAR in your mind as it was in mine. ❞ the reminder’s falsely serious, the kind the older brother would use on the younger, lighter in his teaching than would, perhaps, a parent. but, damn if it has to be arthur morgan’s DYING wish, he’ll see that that child is cared for properly. trust john marston to pay his respects, in the end. from the coffee, morgan moves on to whiskey, uncaps a bottle & welcomes the burning mouthful for its imminent soothing effects. & for the first in a LONG time, a laughter passes his lips, relieving any kind of aching pain ━━━ partly from the thought of a younger, tidier version of john marston dressed in FANCY clothing, partly from the memory of hours spent ‘round the campfire listening to their father’s criticism of politics. ❝ yep. an' we both know what dutch would have to say about the honesty of bankers an’ politicians. ❞
a hoarse, rasping laugh came from john, too, as he thought back on the riveting tirades that had come from the younger, darker-haired dutch van der linde. ‘ if i had any sense about me, i’d say dutch ain’t too fond of ‘em. ’ john found himself lost in a half-moment of contemplation, thinking on at the murky greyness of the future. he considered the world that would belong to his son, and if he had done enough to ensure at least some semblance of stability for it. ‘ i don’t think that kid’ll be much like us at all, arthur. he’d sooner pick flowers than go fishin’. i guess maybe that’s what we need. whatever gets him away from... whatever this is. ’

❛ m’glad he had you , john marston . ❜ he should’ve had me … words she leaves out because the guilt didn’t need to be shared . didn’t need to find validation in the air as she rests her hands against the place her heart sat . a silly dream would hit her & she’d think it stopped beating on occasion .
❛ he spoke so highly of all of you … family he called you . I didn’t get it then . but I like to think I do now . at least , when I look at you , hear you talk bout him like you do … well I know you cared . ❜
john let out one of his half-laughs, dropping his head to shake it towards the ground. ‘ pardon me for sayin’, miss, but arthur morgan didn’t think all that highly of me. dull as dishwater he’d call me. in that familiar way’a his, a’course... i knew he didn’t mean anythin’ by it. ’ marston, ever the weakest link in a conversation, looked off and up into the sky. ‘ soon as arthur started seein’ things clearly... that’s when everyone started doin’ the same thing. he meant a lot to us all. more to some than others. ’
a sensuous, evil world. strange & haunting, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍. ━━━ RDR 2′S ARTHUR MORGAN ROLEPLAY BLOG. written by nannie.
if any of you are giving john marston a full beard / short hair just know you are committing a crime
john, despite all efforts to the contrary, occupied the role of the gang’s prodigal son all too easily. he sat on the wagon’s back, his legs swinging back and forth in their need to stay in motion. ‘ the hell’re we waitin’ for, hosea ? we sellin’ this stuff or not ? ’

❝ lettin’ an older man earn yer keep for ya … definitely sounds like you been spendin’ time with uncle. ❞ eyes shift towards the stew & a faint grimace pulls on his features, the foul aspect only rendered LESS appetizing by marston’s assumption ( he’ll stick to canned food, far as arthur morgan’s concerned ). instead, the pot is accepted with a WORDLESS nod of his head, eyebrow raising at the mention of a mystery mission. ❝ he asks you to start wearin’ a star on your chest, you’re more’n welcome to take mine. gave it to jack a coupla days back. ❞ there’s REDEMPTION … & then there are actions that simply disagree with one’s personal moral code. that shiny lil’ badge clipped on arthur’s chest was only bound to draw unnecessary attention. gaze strays as pot is brought to parted lips ; the mood around camp’s IMPROVED drastically since the change of scenery, thick southern air bringing with it some kind of promise of … hope ? ❝ hosea's been lookin' pretty fired up, lately. think he’s up to somethin’ ? ❞
‘ he ain’t earnin’ my keep, ya damn fool. i told you, he’s holdin’ mine for me. ’ marston seethed inwardly, and despite his reluctance to accept the responsibility of fatherhood himself, he didn’t enjoy arthur’s willingness to stand in as his surrogate. ‘ ’m sure he loved it. just like he loved that damn fishin’ trip’a yers. thanks fer that, by the way. ’ john adjusted himself, cracking his brittle bones: sleeping on the floor had surely done nothing to help the soreness of his back. ‘ you know how he is. gets an idea in his head... fire in his eyes... there’s no stoppin’ hosea matthews then. good thing too. nothing better for a pair’a feudin’ inbred slavers than his schemin’. ’
* derlinde .
he only watches john’s attempts to relax from the corner of his eye ; his gaze fixated on the dark liquid swimming in the cup before him . he listens , SILENT IN ACKNOWLEDGING THE OTHER’S CONCERNS . the worry doesn’t seem so necessary to him .
❝ probably , sooner or later . but , if we play this right , we’ll be long gone ‘fore any of those questions start gettin’ answered . this close , we’re almost invisible . ❞
john was unsure, but didn’t let that betray his face. he remained stalwart, unshaken in the face of his unshakeable leader. ‘ i don’t know, dutch --- sure hope so. ’ he took another sip, the obtrusive thickness of the air even more noticeable now. ‘ town seems full’a fools. even more than they had in valentine. shiners, convicts and inbreds... outlaw’s paradise. ’

❝ you got better things to WORRY about than me, john marston. ❞ the coffee is nevertheless greatly appreciated, warm liquid running down his aching throat, eyes shutting as he battles another fit, swallows more coffee & wipes the back of his hand along a burning forehead, gaze avoiding the other’s. ❝ that lil’ family ‘a yours, for one. jack’s a … he’s a GOOD kid. he’s seen some shit, but no more’n we did at his age, i reckon. ❞ FAMILY. arthur’d tried his hand at that ; had seen the fated end of it. but jack marston’s always been special. ❝ you take good care ‘a him, y’hear ? ❞
‘ course. it ain’t never been a question in my mind, arthur morgan. ’ john fought off the callous in his throat, knowing that in truth arthur held no malice in his order. he watched on as his brother’s body betrayed him, and all he could do was sigh. ‘ difference ‘tween us and jack... we chose this life, dumb bastards we were. jack... he didn’t have no choice. ’ another dejected sigh. ‘ just hope all them stories his mother reads him have him go into some honest work. ’ he scoffed. ‘ at least as honest as bankers and politicians can be. ’
* derlinde .
he raises a brow , somewhat surprised by the generosity . but he doesn’t hesitate to lay his book down in his lap to reach out and accept it . ❝ thank you , john . ❞ he takes a small sip , careful not to burn his mouth before he responds .
❝ if i was turnin’ you in you wouldn’t know it till you was already in a cell , ❞ A TEASE . ❝ we’re movin’ up in society now , son . ❞
marston, the awkward soul he was, fumbled to find a comfortable position to stand in, before bringing his own recently-cleaned pot up to the hem of his lip. he laughed softly with a breath. ‘ now i don’t know about that. you sure it’s smart to get us so close to the law ? surely someone ‘round rhodes-way’ll start askin’ questions ‘bout us. ’
like me up for some starters boah !

❛ you ever regret your last words ? ❜ something tells her he has . but assumptions were the root of vile intentions … mary had none .
❛ I mean that … my last words to him were nothin’ short of awful . all because I didn’t listen … kept assumin’ he was just been well , dumb . I ain’t a saint , john marston … but somehow I feel even less than that . I find m’self thankin’ ghosts again … thankin’ you for doin’ right by him when I didn’t . I’m glad , at least , that someone else could see it in him . ❜
it was then that the words rang true, again, in his head: you’re my brother. / i know. i know. a wave: tough and brutal, harsh and unabashed in the face of john’s currently fragile sense of self. ‘ somethin’ tells me arthur would have understood, ms. linton. he didn’t give away much, but from what i know, he surely would have understood. ‘specially you, of all people. in the end, he was right. should’ve all gotten outta that life... long time ago. ’
* redeampt .
❝ yep, there ya go. puttin’ two an’ two together ! ❞ ( TOLD YOU YOU’D GET THERE . . . ) but it’s turned into a COPING mechanism, he reckons, that endless bickering & teasing ; perhaps a way of holding on to a piece of their past, & arthur morgan’s features tighten into a somber demeanor, head hung low, eyes lost in the campfire ahead. ❝ don’t mind me, john. i’m just … ━━━ tired, i guess. an’ m’done tryna understand what it is that dutch sees in micah. ❞ a fist forms before his mouth as arthur gives in to a cough, voice RASPY when he resumes. ❝ who knows, maybe it’s just … the fact that the asshole never questioned a THING that’s come outta dutch’s mouth. ❞
john gave a concurring grunt. ‘ he’s a yes - man if ever i did see one, that’s for damn sure. ’ marston, having plucked them from the ground, fingered bright blades of grass between his fingers, splitting them into pieces. ‘ hell, what’s the use. no point in tryna figure those two out. we all got bigger problems to deal with. ‘specially you. ’ he flicked the blades to the ground, and set out to pour a black coffee for his collaborator. ‘ by the sounds of it, that cough ain’t gettin’ any better. how long’s it been like... like this ? ’
* maidmess .
it’s all a mess of empty promises inside her chest . a crude hole cut out & lay bare for the world to see . his words hollow , humble her … yet she couldn’t find the strength in her to swallow the dry sob that escapes .
❛ he was always fightin’ that line wasn’t he ? tellin’ himself he wasn’t a good man just to convince himself he didn’t deserve anythin’ … m’sorry , mr. marston . ❜
‘ you ain’t got nothin’a be sorry for, ms. linton. we... we all lost something in arthur. ’ john looked for something --- anything --- to fidget with, to distract himself from the reality that plagued them both. ‘ ... i think about him a lot. he saved my life, you know. without him... hell, i reckon none of us would’a made it outta that place alive. ’
