The elder Fortuny had a passion for collecting objets d’art. In the towns of southern Spain, in the villages of North Africa, in the antique markets of the European capitals, he sought out rare pieces of Hispano-Moresque pottery, Persian carpets, Islamic metalwork and armoury of every sort, all of which accumulated in his Roman villa alongside antique Spanish furniture and a rich collection of traditional fabrics and textiles. The young Mariano grew up amidst this profusion of treasures. As a child they aroused his curiosity; later they inspired many of his own motifs, ideas and constructions.
