Die Archive, 1945-1952(archives constantly being enlarged)
variable dimensions, 14, Carbon copy ink on paper, glass © Maria Trialoni The archive and the process of its creation are directly connected with history and the preservation of historical documents. The work consists of an archive of old newspaper, telegrams , images etc, which notes and recounts the historical documents on the inland Helgoland (1945-1952). Part of the private historical archives, which has been copied by using carbon paper, examines the notions of the production and reproduction, mass communication, information, memory, time and narration.By replication I create these historical documents with the intention of bringing to light historical moments that tend to be forgotten, re- examining historical events and keeping their memory alive.

Die Ansichtskarten, 14, 30 x 21cm each drawing, graphite on paper. © Maria Trialoni The series of drawings “Die Ansichtskarten” focuses mainly on the historical facts during the World War II on the island Helgoland. At that time the island played role as Naval Base. This “island-fortress”, which was entrenched by Adolf Hitler, was destined on 20th century to be used as a bombing range from the Allies. Specifically on 18th April 1945, the British Royal Navy committed a devastating bombing of the island which effected to be uninhabited. The inhabitants of the island had survived in underground shelters, although the next day they were evacuated from the island. In 1947, the British once again tried to destroy all the military facilities of the island with the largest non-nuclear explosion in history ,so - called “Big Bang”. Finally in 1952 Helgoland was restored to the German authorities. Based on those historical facts and the fact that the island was uninhabited caused of the constant bombings I created a series of photorealistic drawings which contain “old and used” postcards with pictures, which documents all the historical facts at that time. For me the act of creating a photorealistic drawing becomes documentation of historical pictures’ narrative.
