The tragedy of Severus Snape is that he embodies what it means to be both indispensable and unwanted.

The war could not have been won without him; Harry could not have survived without him. He gave every part of himself to that fight, and what remained of him was only his bitterness. But, outside of Albus, who wanted him? Who cared?

Even Albus, his staunchest defender, bound him in chains of another kind. His trust demanded obedience, his loyalty demanded sacrifice. The price of Albus’s faith was nothing less than Severus’s life, given piece by piece until he had nothing left to call his own.

And still, he gave. He gave when there was nothing left of him to give. That is the duality so many overlook: that he is both ruin and resilience, cruelty and compassion, a man destroyed and yet a man who still chose to try and make amends.

He is not only the most complex character in the series but, in my opinion, one of the most compelling tragedies in modern literature.

What always drew me to Severus was the accuracy in which his trauma-influenced behaviour is portrayed.

He's not one of those characters that just goes from being "bad" to "good" (James, for example; though between the lines he is actually constantly read as not being the best person in the world - simply his public image that portrays any sort of "good" ... but that's all for another day).

He grew up in a dysfunctional environment, he had dysfunctional friends (Lily included - because she is far from innocent in regards to pain that has been inflicted unto him), he had a dysfuntional family, dysfunctional teachers; the list goes on.

He did his absolute best to survive with the hand he was given, and sometimes it was good, other times it wasn't.

And there's beauty in that. Because at the end of the day, the most human thing you can do is be grey.
