1. When you’re fifteen you don’t expect your heart to fall out of your chest. You’re just starting to learn what love is, your heart shouldn’t be breaking. 2. When you’re sixteen, you’ll kiss a boy just to feel something. You’ll cry when he wants to go farther than you want, you won’t tell your mom what happened but she’ll know you’re hurting by the way you can’t look her in the eyes. 3. When you’re seventeen you’ll get lost, in alcohol, in cigarette smoke, at the back of a library, or in the backseat of a car. It will take you six months to realize you haven’t smiled once since you met him. 4. When you’re eighteen you’ll wear your heart like a war badge. You will tell the new boy who tries to crawl inside your bones that you’ve been through hell and back and if this is not his final destination that it is not a stop along the way. 5. When you’re nineteen you’ll fall in love, it will feel like the world is finally on your side, your heart has started to heal, your walls have started to fall. You think finally this is how it should have felt all along. 6. When you’re twenty you’ll taste heartbreak for the first time, it will be nothing like when you were younger. You’ll try to drown the pain in whatever you can find, including the river. 7. When you’re twenty-one you’ll build walls so high no one can see over them. You will close yourself off like a store that went out of business and you will not open your doors for anyway, including the one who could fill all of the vacancy’s inside of you.
