Deodato had been trying to get back in at Marvel for some time with no success. But this eleven-page story called “The Gift,” featuring Nightcrawler was the deciding turning point in Deodato’s career that brought him back to the House of Ideas. But this homecoming experience was nearly derailed…

Finally, an X-Men editor said, “I’ll give Deodato a story to pencil. But I don’t want it to be his studio guys. It’s gotta be the real him. And I want it to be the best, tightest penciling he’s ever done." 

Yup, here it was, years later, and the lie still persisted that I had a studio of guys doing my drawing for me. Well, at least he was talking about tight pencils, and that was my new super-power. 

…

So I did the story, delivering super-tight pencils, and the editor hated it. "Too much graphite! I can’t turn it over to an Image-style inker. Nobody will want to ink this!” The editor rejected it completely. He forced me to redraw the story much looser, my regular pencils filled out with Xs. I also didn’t get paid for the first version, and I never had the original art returned to me. But fortunately, I kept full-size photocopies.

A week later, the editor was fired, and the new editor [Lysa Hawkins] asked, “Why did Deo draw this story twice? There’s a normal version sitting here waiting to be inked, and there’s this wonderful, amazing version with super-tight pencils.“ When my agent told her what happened, she said basically, "That’s nuts. The first version was so amazing.” And she went to Joe Quesada, who to his great credit got me paid for both versions. 

Then Marvel published the first version to wild reaction, and I spent the next seven or so years drawing in that style, tight pencils.
