He did tell me it was okay to be gay. As long as I didn’t act on it. I used to wonder how I’d ever pull that off. Turns out I didn’t need to worry.
“You’re way too nice. There’s a lot going on for all of us, but you don’t see the rest of us shoving people around.” She sighed, frustrated, getting to her feet. “Whatever. He’ll get his own, one day.” If not, her brother and his friends could always sort him out. They were interrupted by the piercing ring of the bell, Marina wincing at the sound.
“I’m sorry, I’ve really got to get to class, I’ve been late to this one before. But it was nice meeting you, Rhiannon. And don’t forget — nolite te bastardes carborundorum.” She grinned, starting to walk away, yelling back over her shoulder. “Don’t let the bastards grind you down!”

Rhi almost flinched at the approach, paranoid whoever had bumped into her had come back to cause more chaos. She hadn’t expected a helping hand, especially from a stranger. She blinked at the other girl, and her swirling purple-blue aura, for a moment before finally recovering, smiling in response. “Oh, it’s okay. It’s not the first time, so I.. try not to. I’m sure there’s a lot going on for them.” Or apparently him, as Marina had informed her. Still smiling, she took back the books, touched by the gesture. “Rhiannon. Thank you so much, Marina, you… really didn’t have to.”

Rhiannon often felt as if she were invisible, but today, apparently she really was. Someone slammed into her in the school hallway, Rhi too startled to recognise who, sending her stumbling backwards and her books crashing to the floor. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she waited a moment before kneeling, beginning to collect her belongings.
Music blasting through her headphones, Marina wasn’t sure if anything had been said, but she witnessed the encounter with particular distaste. She hated bullies, especially male ones. They were always more physical, intimidating. She’d experienced her fair share, back in One. “Cabrón.” With an irritated sigh, she moved forward, pausing her music to help the stranger gather her things.
“Hey. I know it’s hard, but you should really try not to take stuff like this personally. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with dick size and not getting enough attention from daddy.” Holding out the girl’s books, she smiled. “I’m Marina.”
Guzmán and Rebe saying goodbye (requested by anonymous)

Hearing Guzman and his gang of friends arrive home, Marina slammed her bedroom door shut with a roll of her eyes — not that it did much to muffle the pulsing bass of the music. They had a free house tonight, and clearly, her brother intended to make the most of it. Marina, however, was stuck catching up on her studies, because unlike Guzman, who barely lifted a finger and still got full marks and their parents' love and approval, she had to work twice as hard. She was only just making some progress on Miss Oswald's assignment when her tablet buzzed, and Marina's body went cold. She doesn't need your input. She isn't yours. The message had come from Nat's account, but she knew who'd sent it. So, he was out of the infirmary then. Marina hadn't been able to see or message her friend for months, afraid Campbell would read every word, but his recent hospital admission had given them a short reprieve. She tried her best to speak with Natalie during school hours, in the bathroom, anywhere private. She thought they'd been subtle today, thought he was still recovering, but somehow, he'd found out. Her stomach turned, and she sprinted for the bathroom, gagging on her fear. She took a few minutes to let the nausea pass, but the music pounding through the wall didn't do her any favours. And over the noise, she hadn't heard anyone move down the hallway. Marina jumped when the door swung open, suddenly finding herself face-to-face with her former best friend. She blinked at the blonde, startled, trying to steady her pulse. "Carla." Of course she'd be here. Nowadays, she very much favoured her brother's company over hers. Eventually, Marina looked away, uncomfortable. "Lo siento," she muttered, stepping by her, allowing Carla access. Only, the brunette turned back before the girl was able to shut the door, her hand finding the wood. "— wait." If anyone would be brave enough to stand up to someone like Campbell, to know what to do, it would be her. Even though their relationship had soured, Marina still recognised that. "Can I.. ask you something?"
