“Uh – yeah, really. You’re smart and you’re gorgeous, right? That’s like the perfect combination,” Brooke explained, her smile unfaltering. She was grateful that the brunette had agreed without having to be convinced, too, further proving she’d made the right decision. “Good, then it’s settled. You’re officially my new partner.” With the confirmation, she pulled her chair around entirely, sprawling her stationary over the girl’s desk. “You totally don’t have to worry, I can work hard when I want to. You won’t be doing everything.”
Picking up a glossy pink pen, Brooke began writing out the title. “I’m Brooke, by the way. I can’t believe we’ve not spoken until now. It’s weird, right?” She knew it was likely her fault, as she’d spent time more partying with the more confident of their peers, but after her breakup with Jake, Brooke was looking to explore new connections. Genuine ones.
“I am?” Rhiannon spoke aloud without thinking, genuinely taken aback by the compliments. Funnily, it was exactly how she would’ve described the blonde herself, if she’d been asked. Before she could say another word, Brooke was settling in, Rhi’s eyes widening a little at the sheer variety of the stationary now scattered across the desk. There were colours she certainly wouldn’t mind borrowing, if the girl allowed. “Oh, no, I wasn’t worried. I know.” She smiled shyly in return. Spending so much time alone meant being keenly observant, and despite Brooke’s tendency to hang out with the more intimidating crowd of students, Rhi had often noticed her answering the teacher’s questions with ease. Still, she was grateful to hear Brooke wasn’t planning on just dumping it all on her, even though she would’ve done the work regardless. It’d be nice to have someone to actually talk to during class.
Of course, Rhiannon already knew her name, but she nodded in greeting regardless. “Rhiannon,” she replied. Brooke’s question was a little funny, considering how different their personalities and lifestyles were, but still, she humoured it. “And it’s not that weird, don’t worry. I guess I don’t really talk all that much.” Though, she didn’t really have anyone in class to talk to. Glancing down at the heading, Rhiannon began to think. The assignment had been to pick a novel they each liked and discuss the similarities and differences between them, eventually presenting it to the class. Rhi was having trouble narrowing one down. “Do you know which book you’re choosing?”

After being given yet another paired assignment, Brooke sighed, rolling her eyes the second Miss Oswald turned her back. She’d been partnered with Ruby last time, and they’d failed miserably, the girls unable to agree on anything. She needed someone smart enough to guide her, but kind enough so that Brooke actually enjoyed listening. Glancing around the classroom, her eyes fell onto the quiet girl behind her. Brooke hadn’t seen her much around school, she mostly kept to herself, which probably meant she was intelligent. Brooke hadn’t noticed it before, but she was incredibly pretty, too. With a grin, the blonde whipped around to face her, leaning on her desk. “Hey. You wanna’ team up on this one? I could really use someone who doesn’t yell at me for not wanting to use red ink.”
As usual, Rhiannon was sitting alone, waiting impatiently for class to finish so she could finally get back to the boys. She’d been a loner her whole life, forced into finding independence, but she hadn’t wanted it. And now that she belonged to a group, she didn’t want them out of her sight. Mind elsewhere, she hadn’t noticed the blonde turn towards her, and her eyes went wide with surprise when she was actually spoken to. By one of the most formidable people in the room. And it hadn’t even been to borrow a pen or something equally uneventful.
“Wh- Really?” Rhiannon blinked, taking a moment to register it. “Oh. Um - yeah. Yeah, okay. I’d love to.” And that was the truth, considering she would’ve been chosen at random to pair up with a stranger otherwise. “And you can use whatever colour you want, I really don’t mind,” she smiled, wondering who she’d been talking about.
