What

I had the privilege of taking rhetoric and writing studies 1302 with Audrey once again! Just like last semester I got to learn many new things. This time around  we got to mess around with Tumblr! Not only was it a fun way to turn in assignments, we could also see our classmates posts and response to them, also, we could receive feedback from our classmates. 

So What

SO taking part two of rhetoric and writing studies has been a blast on getting to learn new things that I will apply for my upcoming courses. Writing my literature review taught me on how to create good research questions and interview questions. This assignment gave me the opportunity to interview someone professional in my filed and practice my communication skills. Even though I felt like this..

Now What

Now that I have completed this course I will apply all of the new things I have learned to the rest of my upcoming classes. This class has taught me very well on how to use the library data base, and I know for my upper classes I will be doing lots of research. I will also use my writing skills if I ever want to apply for graduate school..

Future Students of RWS 1302...

Well I just want to let all of the new people coming into RWS 1302 with Audrey that you made a great choice! Just like many of the students coming into this class worry about essays and quizzes, this class will make your life so much easier. There are study guidelines provided by Audrey that will make all of your essays be completed on time. One of the new features of this class is using Tumblr which I think is really cool. At first I was scared of using Tumblr because I had never used it before. I soon realized that it was not as hard as I thought, I just had to play around with it. One advice that I would give to upcoming students taking this class is to not wait until the last minute to turn in a Tumblr post. Trust me even though these post are not "hard" some do take elaboration and thought. Also, if you ever have a question don't hesitate to ask Audrey, she will help you!

First thing! Great post and thanks for your feedback! I will make sure not to scare away my audience with the death rates among Hispanics and non-Whites, I will try to make it as neutral but persuasive. I like how you provided statistical information for your section 1, I think it would be a great idea to convert those numbers into a graph to show your audience visually and maybe grab their attention better. I also really like how you incorporated the policies from El Paso,Texas. As an audience we can get more personal with the policies because we are part of these community. And YES! Language barrier is a disparity that seems like it will never go away...we need to start acting fast! Great post!!

Ethos, Pathos, Logos

SECTION A: The attention grabber

I will grab my audiences attention by providing shocking death rates among Hispanics and non-Whites. This will show the audience how serious disparities in healthcare can be, thus it creates a form of logos and pathos.

Another way to grab my audience’s attention is by providing a powerful picture that they can relate to (PATHOS). For example, the following picture shows different ethnicity’s of many people at once, therefore members of my audience can relate to their ethnicity.

SECTION B: The  policy change

The video below explains in a simple language of the policy ObamaCare! This is a great video that I might include in my Op-Ed on the side of my website. The video goes on to explain how ObamaCare works: who is eligible? How do you apply? Who is not eligible? i will provide statistical information to my audience on who and who does not have insurance. For instance, half of the U.S. population will get health insurance through their jobs, about a third will get health insurance through the government (Medicare and Medicaid), 1 in 10 will get health insurance by themselves, and under 1 in 10 (30 million people) do not have health insurance (LOGOS).

I will propose my policy change by providing facts of today’s policies, such as: The Supreme Court ruled that governors and legislators of each state should decide whether or not they want to be a part of expanding Medicaid. This policy should be changed to where all states need to be on board with expanding Medicaid. This will allow low-income families to get health insurance, thus reducing disparities in health care.

SECTION C: Call to action

In order to minimize ethnic disparities in health care we need to change the diversity among Hispanic, African-Americans, and Native Americans in the health and sciences filed. In order to achieve this goal, I will demonstrate my audience the different kind of scholarships and founds out there for minorities. The next step to minimize disparities in healthcare is to inform each an every minority the advantages they might be eligible for health insurance.

Public Speaking

Section 1

The TED Talk was very interesting and had a logical perspective on advocacy for Global Citizenship. He made a great point in saying that money is necessary, but that it does not bring a resolution. Getting individuals involved and to work as a community proved to be very beneficial. Hugh Evans spoke very well and had the audience activated while he was telling his story. The connections between Hugh Evans and my assignment is that we have to look for more opportunities than just bringing awareness.

I tend to freak out when I have to speak in front of a crowd. So to those who are the same, I found a video that’ll help.

Section 2

The connection between my semester topic and this Op is that minorities are being discriminated, but it also shows how having minorities in the work place can be beneficial. A study was done and shows how the more women and minorities are in the the business industry the economic growth and productivity increases. 

Section 3

So I was thinking of what can be started today. I had an idea that if a petition was created that would remove the section in an application process that requires an individual to click on his/her ethnicity, would give minorities a better chance at being hired. The stigma of an minority only being hired because of  affirmative action would also go away.

I totally agree on you on what Hugh Evans said about money, I also agree on what he said about how there’s people out there that are already “global citizens” but haven't had that motivation to actually step out because they don't know how to start or from where to start. Just like our semester topics, there are probably hundredths of people who are concerned in the diversity  of Hispanic nurses and jobs discriminating minorities, and would like to see some new policies but they might not how these changes can happen or if they can even do something about it. I like your idea on removing the section in an application that requires the individual to put down their race, but what about  hospitals that are specifically looking for certain Hispanic doctors/nurses? Because studies have shown that Hispanic patients are more comfortable with Hispanic doctors/nurses. I guess there's a lot to take in notice..Great post!

 Section 1: Public Speaking

Above you can see some quick tips for the class presentation from the eBook that we had to read, and I just got to say that Hugh Evans nailed each and every one of them! Hugh Evans came up with this term of “global citizens” to those who “self-identify first and foremost not as members of a state, nation or tribe but as members of the human race.” Evan clearly delivered his message of how people live in poverty and how “global citizens” are taking action as simply as raising pennies to send girls to school, provide a toilet for each house, and so much more. From his speech to his body language, it can be said that he is very passionate on what he does, and I believe this is a key point to a great presentation. For example, my group will be talking about the diversity of Hispanics in the nursing field, the more information we know it will be easier to have a conversation with the audience and the more passionate we are about this topic the more engaging the audience will be, and therefore will be attentive. Just how the tips from the eBook suggest, I don’t think that Evan “winged” his Ted Talk, NO! I can be 110% sure that he had to practice a lot to have this motivational speech. Again, this is another key point that the eBook suggests. I can be sure that I will get nervous as well as my group members, but with practice we can become comfortable and find ways in how to cope our nerves. We need to shake it off..

One salient idea found from this website is to practice. Without practice it is impossible to accomplish all key points mentioned in this website. Practicing your presentation will help you cope with your nerves, plan with what you want to say and what not to say, plan how to engage with your audience, and plan how you want to express your body language.

Section 2: Public Opinion

Both this Op-Ed and the Ted Talk of Hugh Evans, demonstrate the action that should be done to accomplish their desire movements and the policies that should regulated. This op-ed talks about how Dr. Carolyn Britton from the National Medical Association, will talk to health care professionals, academics, policy makers, corporate executives, community advocates and others about the important issue of diversity in health and medicine. Throughout this Op-Ed as well as the Ted Talk of Hugh Evans, continually repeat on what should be done.

This Op-Ed relates to my semester topic because it talks about what should be done to minimize health disparities in minority communities. It mentions how diverse communities are more likely to suffer from diseases, such as cancer, and have a worse health care outcome than from a White patient. This is because many minority patients are not inform or aware of how serious it is to visit the doctor when something is wrong. This op-ed mentions how important it is for physicians and health care professionals to be aware of minority cultures. 

Section 3: Public Outreach

Some suggestions that I would make to policy makers would be: 1. Ensure that each minority community has an appropriate health care insurance. 2. Ensure that each community with poor transportation has an available transportation to go see a doctor. 3. Provide insurance for low income families at a reliable price or create programs that are fully founded.

A way that I could incorporate these ideas to this Op-Ed genre is by including data graphics that will show my audience visually information, statistical information from reliable articles or researchers, and eye catching photos that will convey the audience, “such as did you?”

Close-Up, CUT!!! Its Documentary Time!!!

a. I will work on this project for the rest of this week. My group will meet to exchange the information that we each gather in order to start putting the video together. 

b.My group will committed on this Wednesday and Friday to work on our documentary, we will meet at the UGLC in room 233. I will be working alone Thursday, so that I can’t decide on the sections I want to use for our documentary. 

c. On Wednesday we will be working on selecting the content we would like to put on our documentary, this day will primarily serve as a decision making day, and to decided who is going to do what. Friday is going to put everything together, polish the video, and add any finishing touches that may be necessary .

d.  In order to achieve this project I will condense my data that I gather in order to use it for the video. Starting with the Youtube videos that I selected, i need to make sure specifically what parts I want to use because we are only allowed 10 seconds. Next, i will choose my best pictures and quotes. Lastly getting all the citations for my information.

 e. The aspects that I am more concern about would be using the iMovie program even though we had a workshop its a lot of information to take in, however the ATALS lab at the UGLC has staff that can help my group. Also I’m concern to finding the right audio for our video because we have two different emotions that we are trying to evoke upon the audience, however I do think that its possible if my group works together.

f. The aspects that I am most comfortable with is our information that we gathered, I feel that my group has strong content we can use for our documentary. Its just the matte roof putting all together.

I can’t wait to start tomorrow!!! I’m excited, I know that we will finish this project on time and it will be great. one..two...three...ACTION!!!

a.  I will commit the rest of this week for this project for at least an hour or two of gathering and organizing my information that I will present to my group for the days we meet.

b.  Our group will commit on Wednesday and Friday after 11:20am to do our project at the UGLC in room 233 (correct me if I’m wrong if this is the lab room that the girl said in the workshop). I will be working alone on Thursday to upload my interview video so that I can select the appropriate times.

c.  Specifically what we will be working on Wednesday is on trying to get all of our information together and organizing it with the videos and pictures we have selected. On Friday we will do some touch ups and add in the appropriate music, and finish our credits at the end of the video.

d.  In order to complete these aspects of this project I will have to go over each video that I have selected from YouTube and make sure all parts are under 10 seconds for legal purposes, and which pictures to use. I also have to gather my sites for all the quotes that I have gathered.

e.  Some specific aspects of this assignment that concerns me is working with the program iMovie on the Mac computers. I am concerned that our work won’t be saved properly and we won’t be able to be successful....but lucky us the UGLC has trained faculty that know how to use this program! Also, the girl who came to give us the workshop last Friday, I have for my History class and I can always ask her for  further assistance.

f. The specific aspects that I am most comfortable with this assignment is with the information that our group has gather. I feel that our claims in this video are strong and have the evidence to back up each claim we make.

Cool post! I like the quotes that you have provided for ethos, pathos, logos and advocacy, I think they are strong sources for the claim that you and your group have proposed. I think it was smart of you to also include your interview for the section of ethos! I think it would be cool if you included either the audio or video of your interview for the documentary. I am in treat to see your documentary of “Education and Health in the Hispanic Community” because my group is also touching on how Hispanic’s health is at risk because of lack of Hispanic nurses. Hispanic Diversity in Nursing

PART 1

Topic:  Hispanic Diversity in Nursing

Purpose: Influence the Hispanic culture into the health sciences specifically in the nursing field

Audience: Seeking for nursing career

Solution: Scholarships for Hispanics seeking for a Nursing degree, programs, camps

Part 2: Purpose

Ethos:

According to Dr.O’ O'Connell, ethnic disparities can be a cause because of the caregiver, meaning nurses, and doctors. This can be a problem among Hispanic patients and the caregivers themselves.

With a lack of Hispanics in the nursing field, ethnic disparities are more likely to increase..Meaning that Hispanic patients may have have a language barrier between the caregiver and them, or feel uncomfortable because they are not their race..

Due to these disparities, Hispanic patients put their health at risk and may have consequences..

Over the years Hispanic health disparities have been compared to non-Hispanic Whites:

“45% more likely to be newly diagnosed with cervical cancer” -National Center for Health Statistics

“40% more likely to die from cervical cancer” -National Center for Health Statistics 

“65% more likely to be diabetic” -National Health Interview Survey 2012

According to researchers, Hispanics make over 17% of the United States population. This means that disparities might increase over the years among Hispanic patients..

This scholarships shown above are a few of the many scholarships Hispanic students in nursing can get. This only goes on to show that there is hope and opportunities for the Hispanic community in such culture.

Week 11 Reflection on Research Skills

1.  What I learned through my research and what I enjoyed most was finding the arguments for and against.  Additionally, I liked finding and reading information that supported each of those arguments.  Once I had all the information, while keeping the paper non-biased and at the end, I personally could decide with a non-biased approach what is the best course of action, and that is what I hope the reader would get out of it.  It was beneficial to be studied up on the subject prior to conducting my interview, especially since the interviewee has ties to higher echelons in the military and understands their thinking.  I really liked the interview and it not only answered some of the questions but while talking to him offline brought up new ones.

2.  Being able to write effective is crucial both in college but more so in the professional world.  When you get out of college you need to effectively tell your “story” or a “story”, whether writing a review for a certain product being non-biased so as other people or you decide which product is the best to purchase going forward.  Additionally, you might be in sales and you are writing something or whatever platform you are using to persuade someone.  Besides being awesome, writing is probably the second most important thing you’ll learn in school :) 

  3.  While attending this class, a very touchy subject came up between myself and a bunch of my friends about “rumors” that sharia law was going to replace laws in certain cities in America.  My friend posted an article from the internet that the “city officials in Dearborn, Mi voted in favor 4-3 for sharia law”.  My friends were outraged, politics and Constitution popped up.  I checked out the website and noticed that the article was over 2 years old, no author, posted pics that were not from the U.S., adds all over it and from a source I never heard of.  In the end the source was garbage and unreliable and I would like to thank all RWS classes for showing me the difference.  It also stopped the debate about sharia law in the U.S so we could talk about something more relevant.

Let me start out by saying that you did a great job in this post! I agree on how doing the interview was very helpful for this research, like you said we had the opportunity to interview with someone who is an expert in our field. I bet that when you did your interview you weren't nervous BUT let me tell you I was! haha it was still a great experience that I will cherish. I like how you said that we need to be able effectively tell our “story” Its a very good point of view that you give. LOL and I am glad that you found out the date of publication or else I don't know what would’ve happened! :0 It’s amazing of all the things that we have learned in this class, and the cool thing about it its that we can apply it in other classes! Not 1..or 2..but 3 Part Reflection

Now that we’ve tackled that monstrous 10 page report, now we get to settle things down..hopefully xD

     Working on this literature review taught me many things of my upcoming career. What I have learned from creating this literature review is that it takes a lot of time and research, such as gathering scholarly articles, open sources, multi model media, and conducting my own primary research. I have learned that conducting primary research is a lot of fun because you can actually talk to someone who has experience in that field, and can gather new information and learn as well from your subject. Conducting this primary research made me realize that this is a higher level of academic research. I have learned that academic research at this level requires more taught and in depth analysis, along with more references. I have learned also that ethnic disparities in healthcare is a big issue that nurses and doctors face on a daily bases.

     What I have learned in this course is the community problem of ethnic disparities in healthcare. It is important that I have learned this specific community problem because it falls under my professional field. The research that I have conducted in this class will help me figure out the possible conflicts and problems that I may face in a daily basis of my professional job.            As a future college grad I will apply my knowledge of this course when applying to jobs. When I graduate from college and have a bachelors in nursing I would want to apply (for a nurse) in an Hispanic community. From the research that I have conducted in this course, I have learned that minorities feel more comfortable around their race. As a Hispanic woman I could give a comfortable environment for a Hispanic patient, and provide equal health treatment.       As a future professional I will take the knowledge that I have learned in this course and apply to it. From the research that I have done in this class I have learned that nursing students have to take courses in college that teaches them the cultural values of different minorities. By then I will know the different cultural values of my patients and I will be able to apply all of my knowledge for my patients care.

Since ethnic disparities in healthcare has become into a situation causing implications in minorities, I should be able to use my knowledge in a daily basis of my profession life. For instance, I am actually learning different cultural values. Two of my best friends are Indians and both their parents are doctors and they always comment with me on how they run their business. It is actually different from the way “we” run them. For instance, I have learned that Indians are very conservative and don’t really liked to be touched. I can apply this knowledge of mine someday when I become a nurse. And learn not to discriminate someone because of their race, sexual orientation, and gender.

Good job on explaining the graphic image and conclusion!! I like how you wrote out the key points for each section. It really helped me out by just going over them. Especially by pointing out the key points for the conclusion because I personally think its were you should end the strongest.This is also a new section that was touched on Friday and for you to post a video on how to make graphs on excel will not just help me but other students. Hopefully it will help other students like me who don’t really know how to work a computer lol. So good job!

Assignment Requirements: Methods

+ Goes after the introduction

+Should be around a page long

+ Explain the purpose of your primary research (Give your interview a name, give a statement of what you hoped to find out)

+ Explain the methods used to conduct your primary research (Where, how, and when you conducted your primary research)

+ Give your results of primary research (list down your research questions, briefly answer them, and give any demographic information)

+ Talk about the implications of your primary research (how does your primary research relate to what your other sources say)

So Close...

Now that spring break is over is time to get back on track! And one of the main things that I’m looking forward to (not really) is the interview with my chosen scholar. But first thing first, I have to send an interview request email. Which as you can see I have done:

Week 7

Where do I belong? Choosing majors is like choosing one out to wear for the rest of your life! Decisions, Decisions… So why stick to one when you can double major!

Advising isn’t quite clear on the website, however, Utep has resources available to us, so I’m sure can find out when advising is being done. I mean how hard can it be…right?

Now that I’ve done my initial research for my semester topic. Now it’t time to locate scholars that I’ll have the privilege of interviewing. I went through the list of possible interviewees and chose 3 scholars that I’m interested in interviewing. I was able to locate their bio’s and contact information, so let the interview commence!

I choose Dr. John Hadjimarcou because his main research interests are in international marketing strategy and cross-cultural consumer behavior. He has also received multiple awards for his research. I was also in one of his classes last semester, and I know once I gave him information as to the research I’ll be doing for this class he’d give me time to interview him.

I choose Dr. Gary Frankwick because his research and teaching interests include marketing strategy, sales, business-to-business marketing, International business, and new product development. With a  background in Marketing and Management, I feel that he has some knowledge to provide if willing on the outlook of people in business’s perception of minorities in business.

I choose Dr. Somanath Mukhopadhyay because he’s an accomplished  minority in the business field. He also has extensive knowledge that could be useful for the research that I  am doing. So hopefully he would be will to have an interview with me.

I feel like we are all experts at stalking people lol But good job! You are so lucky that you might possibly interview your professor from last semester! All of your scholars seem like they could provide you with new information that you weren’t aware of. And tell me about it...the nursing webpage didn’t have clear information on advising...but we’ve completed this assignment! One step at a time!
