Mario Booker: How to Help Students from Disadvantaged Backgrounds

One of the most challenging aspects of being a teacher is helping students who don’t have matching support at home. Mario Booker has worked with students from disadvantaged backgrounds for fourteen years with Chicago public schools, University of Chicago Charter Schools, and Longwood Charter Schools. In every classroom he’s been in, there are invariably students who excel with the material, earn good grades, and show improvement across the board. There are also students who struggle everywhere he’s been as well. Booker treats all of his students with respect and helps those who are falling behind any way he can.

The most important tool that teachers like Mario Booker have to help students who are struggling and not getting the support they need from their home life to be successful in school is time. Booker often spends extra time with struggling students to help them catch up and build confidence on their own. These students don’t need to teachers like Booker to do the work for them, they need to learn on their own with some guidance and support. Patience with these children is an important skill that Booker practices every day. He keeps their perspective in mind and gives them the support they need to succeed in classes every day.

Mario Booker is a fifth-grade teacher working for Longwood Charter Schools in Chicago. He is also a volunteer assistant basketball coach for the fifth and sixth grade boys team. Booker also tutors students for SEAM360 Tutoring. He has helped many students who were falling behind catch up and have success in his classroom and beyond.
