The first post I chose to reblog was a post by scanada1humn220 and her word being freedom. After reading her post I automatically thought about my space and how I mentioned it was also a space where one can feel free. She mentions that within her space she had restrictions and distractions but she was able to just focus on her thoughts and ignore everything around her; At times that is exactly what I do when in my own space. It did not occur to me to think about Boethius when trying to relate freedom within my own post but I believe she did a great job with describing how it relates.

The second blog I reposted eemanuelhumn220 and the word she chose was comfort. Of course I chose to reblog this post because it reminded me once again of my own. Although the way she chose to describe the word to her liking is different from the way I think of comfort in my own space. For example she mentions how it’s where she feels most comfortable to be herself and she being familiar with her surroundings, compared to my space where I am able to feel comfortable to be myself outside with people around me and feeling as if I’m on some adventure.

This last post I reblogged was from blaineball-humn and he did not choose an exact word. I thought it was interesting how he chose not to use a word but a full understanding about his space and the way the course taught him to see it differently from others.

Word.

“Open”

The key word I chose to focus for my last observational post is open. I thought about this word because throughout this semester I considered my space an open space; a space where one can go and enjoy themselves with friends and all the scenery of nature. I suppose the text that is relevant to this post is Foucault. In the Foucault piece there is a moment when he describes utopias and how utopias are seen as this perfect place. All year I have noticed that throughout these posts I always mention how my space is a peaceful open place for people to hang out and have fun and it’s a perfect description of a utopia. A term that was mentioned a few times throughout this semester was freedom, and how this term may relate, is to think about the freedom one may feel when being at my space. In my opinion to be free is to have an open mind, one may not go very far when sitting in self confinement. If it’s one thing I took from these assignments it is to be open about a space and look at the small details, to consider “what makes a space a space”.

The first photo collage I chose to reblog is “What do you consider beautiful?” I chose this collage because how much similar it is to the photos I have taken for my collage. These series of photos start from somewhere else and lead its way to the area water. It demonstrates how photos can capture such beautiful scenes of nature and the moments that accompany them. When viewing this collage I can’t help but feel as if I am there, sitting beside the water, listening to the sounds of nature. I imagine relaxation and serenity in this beautiful area.

“Laughing and Loving in my Space” is the second collage that I chose to reblog. When viewing this ensemble of images I feel as if I am at home. Laying down, watching movies or TV shows, a relaxing way to spend the day or a few hours. Enjoying the company of my friends, family and pets, similar to how I feel when I am in my own space. The words on the wall, laugh and love, describe these captured moments perfectly.

The final collage that I chose to reblog is “Studious Sally.” I chose these sets of images because they are completely different from the others that I chose. When I look at these pictures of course I know I am inside the library but I see the things that I don’t necessarily pay any attention to when I am actually there. In my opinion the point of this collage was to notice the small things that make a whole image, in this case what makes a library a library. That is what I liked most about these sets of images, that they are not telling a story but creating the bigger picture.

The first video post I chose to reblog is from branerhumn220 and the creek area around the Chico State emblem. I chose to reblog this post because in ways it reminded me of my own space. Ways such as the water flowing through and hitting against the rocks and parts of the area glistening as the sun hits. I found it interesting how he connected his area to a beach, which I find to be reasonably accurate. I agreed with it because it has all the aspects of a beach, the water, sun, and the sand/gravel. It’s a very beautiful view to see.

The second video post I reblogged is from katiehumn220, roaming in roses. Personally I have never walked through the rose garden nor did I know the full name to be the George Petersen Rose Garden. Although I really admired how she wanted the main focus to be on the size of the roses and bright colors that pop out from all the green leaves. The place seemed to be peaceful at the time as she mentioned and I find that to be true about many of the areas on campus, peacefulness was also mentioned in the video post I talked about before.

This last video post I chose to reblog has different scenery than the other two. Rebishumn220 shot video of downtown Chico showing off a town aspect rather than nature. As she mentioned it shows a typical day downtown, the buildings, construction and even homeless people walking around. I liked this video because she had mentioned it’s not like the downtown one might see in larger cities. This downtown mostly seems quiet and calm throughout the day, similar to other places in the area.

(tumblr would not let me upload the whole video) But my video is footage of downtown Chico and the area surrounding my space of which it is located. I feel my video portrays downtown well and shows what goes on during a typical day. It shows cars driving by, all the shops, construction, beautiful trees, as well as a homeless man walking in front of me, which may be inappropriate to say but there is a good amount of homeless people who spend a lot of time in downtown. It shows that downtown is not busy 24/7 compared to downtown in let’s say L.A., because people are attending class and working. By filming this I also noticed how it was actually pretty quiet and calm

Roaming in Roses

This is my video of me walking through my chosen space, the George Petersen Rose Garden. Not much noise can be heard in the background throughout the video except the sound of my footsteps. At one point, a man can be seen and heard in the video talking on his cell phone about the Giants baseball team winning the World Series yesterday. Also, the faint sound of birds flying around and chirping in the background can be heard. The main focus of the video was to showcase the roses, and how many different colored and sized roses there are. The rose garden is a perfect place to go if you want to relax for a bit because, as you can tell from the video, at certain times during the day when not many people are out and about, the environment is very calming and can be a stress reliever. On a day like today, when the wind is blowing slightly, the smell of the roses can be detected anywhere you walk in the garden. Narrow rock pathways can be seen in the video too, which allow people to easily walk through the garden and see all of the roses and birds and bees that often frequent the roses.

I had to shorten this video to about 50 seconds because my 60 second video was too large to upload. 

Walking through this space calms me down because I just think it is so peaceful. From the creek water flowing down the stream to the birds singing in the trees. It all seems to hide the collection of voices that murmur in the background. I started my walk through this space by the water because that is my favorite place to be. The white noise created by the distant water hitting the rocks below my feet as I stand on the quiet little beach. The sand crumbles beneath my shoes as I walk along the beach and the leaves crunch as I walked back up the steep hill that leads back to campus. On top of the hill is where I saw the Chico State emblem and its dedication below it. The sun reflects its light through the trees as it creates a glistening effect on the water.  My journey on this path ends with the view of caution tape and a metal gate that warns students and staff to not cross the bridge. This is where the most recent tree fell, causing the bridge to collapse into the creek below, which flows on back to me in my space.

I chose to take a video of myself and some friends walking to my space rather than of my actual space. I did this to show what one might have to go through to get to my space. While walking to my space as you can see there are so many rocks you have to jump over and climb. All the jumping and climbing is hard work for some people like me but it is fun. While walking you can hear the water flowing by, I did show some parts where you can look over and see the actual creek; I did this to show that walking to my space is not all rocks and trees. It may not look as nice but once at the actual spot of my space it’s a beautiful view. The couple that passed by were actually really nice people. As I said before my space is a good place to hang out with friends or just relax, you can meet people and have a good time. Right after I stopped recording we met more people and we all just hung out swimming and having a fun time altogether.

The first thing I had noticed after I reblogged each post was that each had a different type of map to show off their space. The first map, My Happy Place was drawn; which I believe was very brave because I cannot draw. Although, I enjoyed seeing how she put in the small items that make the space more personal and special to her. For example, the flowers, coffee, and candles, each must be significant to her in order for her to draw them in her map. I realized that this map is also an enclosed space compared to the other map that I reblogged along with my own map. Even though this is a space with boundaries it is still an open space as she mentions, it is a cozy and comforting space to be a part of.

This second map is an aerial view of the Chico State stadium. Something the writer had mentioned was the date of the picture and lack of green lines at the bottom left corner. When passing that general area today you are able to notice the bike paths. Similar to my map this one shows different paths for example the field, even though the white lines are for separation I believe that they can still be considered paths because they guide you around the field. He also mentioned how linear the lines are to one another and again in comparison to my map, the paths in some way follow the creek.

The last post that I reblogged was Taking a Step Back which was a sky view of this persons space. Similar to the last post I reblogged this space also mentions trails that you are able to follow. These trails follow the lake and one thing I really liked about this map unlike my map, was the housing surrounding the lake. He had mentioned that those people who surround the lake are the ones who get the most from this area. The area of my map lacks housing but has more trees as well as plant life.

Taking a step back.

I chose a map that had a sky view of my space and the space around it. This map shows a wide surrounding view of the lake. I think this map is perfect to illustrate the peacefulness of my lake because it not only shows the housing around the lake, but it shows the long trails that you can take to walk around it. Also the type of housing that surrounds the lake is very peaceful too. Like Windchime and Sierra Sunrise Village, which are, assisted living homes that are very quiet neighbors for the lake. These calm neighbors are the ones that get to enjoy the space the most.
