because this has a lot of notes, yall should know that a good amount of the actors you see in these gifs are in brownface and the makeup artist used the same shade for every “puerto rican” in this movie. rita moreno, the one in the top gif in the purple dress in the middle, said recently in an interview that she tried to tell the makeup artist that puerto ricans are diverse, that they can be black and french and spanish, and she was accused of being racist. 

so if you’re gonna reblog this, know that this movie is not as “woke” as yall think it is. the lead “puerto rican” female character was played by natalie wood, a white woman. 

fortunately, a remake is actually in the works and the casting call for these characters specifically asks for latinx actors and white actors for the opposing gang, as the entire premise is romeo and juliet and racism. 

i love this musical, really i do. but i’m sick of seeing this reblogged as something so clever and woke when at LEAST half those dancers are in brownface.
