Joyce and Hopper get married, and Jane is so happy to have a real family, with siblings and a mom, that she quickly becomes attached to Will because they're the same age (and because Will is the quietest of the Byers). This attachment bothers Mike because until then he was the person (besides Joyce and Jonathan) closest to (and favorite of) Will. Thus, a new rivalry is born, fueled by Mike's jealousy and his distrust of strangers.
