day 7: swing
ship: sirius x maria (oc!)
wc: 1159

dusk overwhelmed the sky, tinging it to make the clouds appear like spun candy with a warm pink turning blue. sirius sat down in the communal area, hands shaking in his lap as he attempted to calm his breathing.Â
âshe will be alright. the clerics will be able to fix her wounds. cure her. fix her. return her to normal.â he thought, mind racing to every possibility.
âshe will die. she will die because of my thoughtlessness. my inability to protect her. i should have been there to shield her from that damned spear.âÂ
the steel lance he had been cursing was the one that had injured maria severely. they had been ambushed and an unseen man took it as an opportunity to take down the queen of spades, but the manâs inaccurate trajectory had harmed alice the second instead.
sirius hugged one of the plush couch cushions tightly, praying to the gods so intensely that he had fallen asleep.

he opened his eyes to find himself in a never-ending, shallow pool of clear water that had a mirror-like reflection of the sky above him. it was a clear azure with large numbers of fluffy, but sheer clouds. he turned beside him to see an empty swing set, the seats shifting slightly with the breeze. he walked toward it with curiosity and after taking a glance at the build, he eventually took a seat. it seemed like an exact replica from a park in Cradle that he had once taken maria to. with the thoughts of her in mind, a gentle voice rung in his ear.
âsirius? is that you?â the voice spoke gently. he turned to the side, and to his surprise, it was maria. she walked over to him, her steps creating ripples in the glass-like water. they locked eyes for a moment, until sirius sprinted up to her, picking her up in a tight embrace.Â
âit is indeed me, my little lady.â he whispered tenderly. he had not seen her since she was sent to the clerics for emergency treatment. the image of her with a long wooden spoke in the middle of her stomach would be permanently embedded in his mind. âi feared that i had lost you forever.â he sighed, words filled with fretfulness and worry, and he set her back down in the water. mariaâs body shown no signs of injury, and he began to mutter a needless apology until she put a finger to his lips, silencing his next word.Â
âsirius... you need not apologize for something that could not even be foreseen. you would have never known that the man was hiding in the groves. it was cradleâs national holiday. a day in which we prioritize the peace and harmony of cradle. it was simply my luck.â she chuckled as she cradled his jaw. he wordlessly looked into her eyes in hopes to think of a response. the clouds uncovered the sun, which allowed her mahogany eyes to lighten to a dusty burgundy-like color. the sky was getting darker, sunset nearing and the time they were spending was passing faster than normal. he grasped her hand and led her to the lone swing set. she sat down and lightly held the chains of the swing. sirius pushed against her back, and with this she was swinging back and forth, cheerily laughing. he admired her beautiful, single-dimpled smile. she steadily slowed her movement, and with the help of her lover she was settled back into a neutral seating.
âdo you remember the when i had first arrived from the land of reason, and one of the first places you took me was the small park near the outskirts of town?â maria asked. she continued on: âwe had let loose, running around the area freely. but with all this, the one memory that had always stuck with me was when you pushed me on the swing set that looked just like this one.â as sirius listened, he ruffled and stroked her hair as he waited for her to continue. âthat was the moment when i realized that you were one of my main sources of happiness. with you, i felt that i could fly. you inspired me with your acts of selflessness in and out of the headquarters. you rarely faltered with conflict and handled situations cooly. i admired you so much.â she heartily confessed, and took another glance at the sky. only mere stripes of orange remained, and the blue was developing into and indigo. small colorful lights fell from the sky like snow, and settled onto the surface of the water. sirius processed her words, the hair-stroking coming to a pause, and then asked gently:
âyour words are kind, and there is a copious amount of words that i can say to prove my love for you.â he smiled, though his voice remained serious for his next phrase. âyou arenât leaving me now, are you?â with this, maria rose from the swing and stood next to him, softly grabbing the hands that enveloped hers perfectly. she looked up at him, a bittersweet smile on her face, but she didnât respond. the glittering lights lit up her features, and all he could do was clench her hands tightly in the hopes that she wouldnât be taken away from him.Â
colorful rings of light began to slowly surround mariaâs body, and sirius pulled her into a tight embrace, whispering desperate apologies in her ear. the certain ones he had thought when he was sitting on the sofa of the common room. he felt tears well up in his eyes, and all he could do was cry out in desperation that he could be given more time.
âbut why must you leave me so soon?â he asked her. on and on, he fired questions that would soon be meaningless. âwhat about the french toast we promised to buy, and my family i had wanted you to meet?â he sobbed hopelessly. she was glowing brighter now, and he could feel less and less of her warmth as he felt her crumbling away. maria, unable to return him any sort of reply, hugged him with all possible strength in her being, and the tears she had forced to withhold streamed down her cheeks and dripped into the water beneath them. at last, she had reached her final moments and she softly pushed away from him, wanting one last gaze into his amethyst eyes. cupping his face, she sighed solemnly, and her last words left her lips.
âthank you... for this chance. i love you, sirius.â she spoke, a sad smile filling her face, and she disappeared with no trace from his vision. sirius looked, around him. the sky was nearing a navy blue to black. the colors that once surrounded him were gone, and the only thing left was the linger of her scent and the swing set that swung gently with the quiet breeze.
