A Humble, Little Rant.

I've always found the question “What’s your pet peeve?” a strange one, not because it’s a strange way to get to know someone by basically asking “What really pisses you off?”, but no, mainly because I've never considered myself to have a pet peeve, until now.

Now before I start, I’m going to state that I’m not the strongest writer and I’m not by any measure a grammatical genius. And no, this is not the typical ‘your or you’re’ debate or the ‘there, their or they’re’ one either, although misuses of these do annoy me, but none of these gets my blood boiling as much as misuse of the word…. Humble.

You may be thinking “But who’s misusing the word humble?” and the answer seems to be (but not exclusive to) anyone receiving an award. After watching glimpses of the ‘BAFTAS’, ‘The Brit Awards’ and a few other award ceremonies I have never in my life seen so many people bastardizing the word humble within such a short time frame. It’s come to a point where it seems to be obligatory for an acceptance speech to feature some form of the phrase “Winning this award tonight, is a truly humbling experience”, “I've never been humbled in my life” etc. etc. Now let’s take a quick look at the definition of the word humble.

Now we’ve had a little look at the definition of the word humble I think we would agree that receiving an award is not “a humbling experience” but if anything, the absolute opposite (unless the award in question, is a ‘worlds worst’ award). A humble experience is something that puts you in your place, makes you feel smaller or knocks you down a peg, like, for example, not winning that award you thought you might win. Thus when someone uses the phrase “I am humbled” while accepting an award not only are they wrong, they are also the least humbled person in that room.

Now misuse of the English language by celebrities with shit eating grins is not uncommon, this particular circumstance not only goes by seemingly unnoticed but is also occurring more and more, and often outside of award ceremonies. One of my favorite video games journalists referred to being offered his dream job as a… wait for it… “Humbling experience”. And now every time some kickstarter project passes it’s funding target they will utter some variation of the phrase “We have been truly humbled by the support of our fans”…. Oh dear, oh dear.

 I’m not suggesting that anyone without complete comprehension of the English language should be restrained from speaking, but can people please stop using the word humble to describe a situation that is the complete opposite of humble. I don’t know why this grinds my gears so much and I probably will never know. Rant over. Thank you for reading. Bye.
