Lucene Revolution 2011 is the largest conference dedicated to open source search. The Lucene Revolution 2011 brings together developers, thought leaders, and market makers who understand that the search technology they've been looking has arrived.This is an event that should not be missed by anyone that is using, or considering, Apache Lucene/Solr or LucidWorks Enterprise for their search applications.
Apache Lucene has been around for more than a decade, but 2010 was certainly a big year for Lucene. Many Java developers that I know started to get serious about Lucene in 2010 and its adoption rate certainly seems to have taken off.Grant Ingersoll provides a much more descriptive overview of Lucene in 2010 in the post The Apache Lucene Ecosystem: My View of 2010.
Open source communities, of course, are no different than other communities in this respect. There are many nuances to the business and technology and collaboration models in open source completely lost on those not intimately involved in how things are done.
The new Solr Lucene Zone features that same calibre of content focused directly on Apache Solr and Apache Lucene open source search technologies, along with the critical complements from around the ecosystem. Given its reach into a broad range of developer communities not yet directly involved in open source search, it represents a great opportunity for developers from all walks of technology to get their heads into the Lucene/Solr world. Its fresh, up-to-date format provides continuous visibility into new developments in the space, whether you’re new to Solr and Lucene or a well-traveled veteran.
Listening Platforms are a new class of search based applications which help organizations understand their marketplace by monitoring and extracting information from traditional and social media sources. With these applications, global organizations are seeking to understand, interact with, and react to their customers around the world. As these customers increasingly create and consume media in their native languages, leading organizations are going to rely on their listening platforms to understand and deliver insights using information from many languages.
After a week off to enjoy time with my family, I thought I would kick off the last week of 2010 with a look back at the year as it relates to the Apache Lucene ecosystem. For anyone who follows the amalgamation of projects that I like to call the Lucene Ecosystem (the Apache projects: Lucene, Solr, Nutch, Mahout, Tika, PyLucene, Lucy, Lucene.NET, Droids, ManifoldCF — Lucene Connector Framework, OpenNLP and UIMA) you know it has been an amazingly busy and fruitful year. Instead of going through each project like last year’s review, I’m just going to be a bit less formal and hit on the highlights as I see them.
With the global launch of LucidWorks Enterprise, we’ve also introduced a new online documentation system at http://lucidworks.lucidimagination.com/. This is the complete product User Guide, documenting all the features and functionality of LucidWorks Enterprise.
This talk outlines the full-text search system for the Internet Archive’s Archive-It hosted archiving service which serves 120+ customers, 1500+ collections, and 900+ million documents, adding nearly 1 million new documents each day. We are currently using a homegrown Lucene solution and want to migrate to Solr. I will touch upon the challenges we have run into so far.

Congrats to the Apache Mahout team on their 0.4 release. Lots of new features and bug fixes like online learning algorithms (Stochastic Gradient Descent), more consistent command line interfaces, new clustering algorithms and many speed improvements.
