Difference between a manager and team leader

Team leader and Manager are not synonyms as misunderstood by many. These terms mean different things in different organizations, but it makes  sense to propose general definitions that clarify a somewhat hazy topic. We’ll assume that in both cases, the members of the team report to the manager or team leader, at least for the duration of the project that they’re working on.

If the team fails to meet its goals or is dysfunctional, that’s on the person who’s running the team, regardless of their title. Think about these responsibilities in terms of accountability rather than authority. A manager may be a fine programmer, but their core responsibility is management and coordination, not necessarily bringing an authoritative voice when it comes to making technical decisions.

The difference matters in terms of setting the expectations of the members of the team. It’s a dangerous thing when the members of a team think of the person running the team as a manager but they think of themselves as a team leader. Or if the team members have a manager they expect to be a team leader but who isn’t equipped to function in that role.

How to impress your boss

If you're trying to get ahead at work, one of the key people you want to impress is your boss. Also try to come to office early and leave late. No not very early or late : just 10 – 15 would make a difference. It would show that you are not a clock watcher but rather than you are interested to be at work everyday.

Have industry relevant reading material in your shelf. Take a few minutes between tasks to take a break and read a bit from these books. Thus you would show that you are improving your skills and dedicated towards learning something new in your industry rather than gossiping in your free time.

Dress well – always! Don’t just put on the first thing that comes to your hands in the morning. If you want to go up the ladder : observe how the superiors are dressing to work and dress as appropriately as them. Careless dressing can show that you really don’t care about your role in the industry. Help your boss make more money by saving money. In the long run the little savings that you initiate can return back to you as a increase in pay check.

Take a risk: don’t always say yes and agree with everything the boss says. If you have an different opinion, make sure that you have data to back it up. Having a informed opinion is better than just disagreeing. Come prepared for work every day.
