“I am almost certain I can make that happen.”
"Please do. It's barely been three days and the Slytherins are already getting on my nerves."
“Don’t act like you don’t enjoy them, McKinnon.”
“Never said I didn't— aimless conversations are the spice of life. Although I must say, they become a million times more interesting when I'm drunk.”
“Nah. To that, I’ll reply with ‘I’d have used spectacular, personally, but I suppose marvelous will do.”
" I'm glad we're still having meaningful conversations, Black. "
“ Sundays and Thursdays, actually. ”
" Marvelous. And to this, I assume you'll reply with «Marvelous indeed». "
“ Of course you were. “
" Do you normally state the obvious so often or is it just today? "
“ Nah, talking is overrated. “
Marlene's face broke into a smile, " I was secretly hoping you'd say that. "
[She spun at the voice, but it was slow and bored all at once. She knew that voice however and relaxed in a moment. ]
Yes well, unfortunately I like being on time, and going to class, so I’ll push through. And, if necessary, I’ll threaten the them all with a well placed Bombarda spell if they don’t get moving.
That is, in fact, not a bad idea. Still, I'd much rather skip class altogether. Don't you want to do the fun thing once in a while, Doe? I need someone to keep me company, or I'll be deadly bored.
[ She made a sad face, her sticking out her bottom lip with her eyes turned beseechingly to the other girl. ]
Please?
“ You have no idea. ”
" You're right, I don't. " Marlene sighs. " Do you want to talk about it? I do have to warn you, I'm a horrible listener. "
“ That might actually be my fault. I, er, kind of moved in with the Potters this summer. Got too tired of my parents’ shite and just up and left. ”
" I suppose congratulations are in order then. Given how fabulous your two Slytherin cousins are I'm guessing the Potters are a tremendous upgrade. "
Well, you were the one who said we are friends
but you’re not all bad, for that matter.
Oh, I know that, silly. I just wanted you to say it.
Annalise took a few seconds before responding, staring blankly at her own outstretched hand halfway to grabbing the last cake, She turned to the other girl. “Why do you test me, Marley?” she breathed out, turning her attention longingly back to the cake. “It’s a nice little cake, isn’t it? Don’t you want me to be happy?”
Marlene flashed Annalise a wicked smile and a wink as she closed her hand around the cake, having already paid the trolley lady the three sickles, "I'm sorry, Annalise, but they're too good. I'll let you have a little if you'd like." The blonde took the cake up to her mouth and gave it a large bite.
“ That so? I’ll have to keep that in mind. Yeah, it was great, actually, really great. ”
" Did you see James at all? My family invited him to Switzerland but he refused, and I still fail to understand why. Ben spent half the days moping about how it would be so much more fun were he around. "
Seriously, when did the halls become so crowded? I do not remember it being this bad last year.
[ Doe mused aloud as she pushed her way through the crowd, finally finding a pocket of fresh, open air in which she stopped. ]
You know what my solution to all of this— [ Marlene, sitting casuallyon a window frame and inspecting a scratch on her wand intently, motioned with her hand toward the commotion in the hallway ] —is? Being fashionably late. The teachers don't like it, but at least I save myself the trouble of pushing through the gaggles of ickle firsties.
"You want me to stop? Nice try."
Come on, Vanity, you’re killing me here. [ Marlene hops of her broom and lies down on the Quidditch pitch grass, her breathing shallow ] This is the last time I let you buy me two butterbeers before we play one-on-one. Can we please just call it a day and go back to the Three Broomsticks?
I just think you seem very unapologetic for someone who values friendships as much as you say you do. Especially in times like these.
So you would like me to braid your hair now? I'm getting mixed signals here. Why would you want to be friends with someone who's annoying and has views on friendship so different from yours?
[ takes a deep breath ] Full moon is on the first day of school. I can actually smell the fresh meat this year, it’s fuckin’ far out.
Please try not to maim any first years on the first week, Randolf. I know restraint isn't your strong suit, but I'm hoping that won't be too much to ask.
Not true. And ouch. You’re just bitching because you don’t like most of the girls I hang out with. And that’s your problem, not mine.
We did, but you’re making it a little more annoying than boring. You seem like an old west bandit. Like a blind gunslinger that’s trying to shoot everywhere because of the lack of aim, trying to hit anything at all, trying to have an effect. You insult my looks, my abilities, my girls, And to what end?
Hey, you initiated the conversation. You knew I was annoying. Besides, what else would you like to talk about? Our hopes and dreams? Our deepest secrets? Would you like me to braid your hair now?
