âSometimes the biggest adventures happen within us, not around us. We just need to open up for them.â
Trigger warnings/content warnings:Â Â death, injury, survivorâs guilt
Marlo was born as the third child of Hugo Falk and was the last child of Agnes Falk in Portland, Oregon. She was welcomed into the world by two loving parents and two older siblings, her sister Meredith and her brother Casper. When Agnes came out of labor, she was greeted by cheering and happy tears - the family had grown. However, only four months later they were a member short. Ever since Marloâs mother was a little girl, she had known about her heart condition - something that had limited her in most tasks but she never wanted it to strip her of motherhood, no matter how against it the opinions of the doctors were. So when Casper was born, everyone gasped and when they found out Meredith was on the way, everyone prayed and by the time Marlo was born and everyone was healthy, it felt like things were falling into place. Until Agnes collapsed one day and never got back up, leaving Hugo devastated and the young children unable to comprehend what has happened.
Hugo moved to the States to run a small store with his wife only six years prior, so when the widower was left with three children and a store, he had to reach out for help and soon hired Kate, a young woman who had so much love in her, she picked the family up one by one. It wasnât a surprise when only two years later there was a rushed wedding and when Marlo was three years old, she was at the hospital to greet her new baby brother, Steven, followed by his twin sister Brooke. The Falk family was growing once more with just as much love to spare and the memory of a loving mother watching over them.
By the time Marlo was six years old, the final Falk child, Nathan, was an infant and the family was big, happy and complete. They shared the place above the store, which was tight but it was home. The girls had two bedrooms to share while the boys all stayed in one room. The term âstep-motherâ or âhalf-siblingsâ was never said - they were the Falks, they belonged together. Marlo, a sandwich-kid at its finest was always a powerhouse with much more energy that could fit into her small body. Playgrounds had become boring by the time she was eight so it wasnât a surprise she became an untamable teenager. Always looking for new adventures, always looking for something new to get her heart pumping. So when her parents announced the move to San Francisco when she was sixteen, the girl couldnât have been happier. With two moving trucks and a van, the family moved to California and into a bigger home where everyone had their own space. Her fatherâs new office job paid well and even better once he got promoted. Kate opened a flower store that graced a steep street and Marlo grabbed her backpack, enrolled in mountaineering courses and eventually joined a group as soon as she was out of college, graduating with a bachelorâs degree in Geophysics.
Traveling the world, she eventually had enough experience to be a guide and organize the adventures she once joined. She was passionate about feeling the rush of climbing the highest hills and mountains, moving from one place to another, her end goal becoming the Seven Summits. With her fiery temper and stubborn nature, she wasnât one to back down or turn around, something that got a tired group going. However, it became her doom. When she was twenty-seven years old, her group was attempting to climb the Matterhorn when an Avalanche hit them. Out of eleven people, only Marlo, the other guide and two climbers survived. She was severely injured, sustaining the worst injury to her left eye. But most didnât care about that since her name got slandered by the media, the blame being placed on her. The girl returned to San Francisco and started treatments. Chances of a full recovery were better than expected but the process was long and feasible. However, she had her family at her side and the two-year timespan was much more bearable with them around her.
Once she was out of the hospitals and clinics, she took on a job at the office her father worked at but soon her restless nature kicked in. Sitting at a desk just wasnât her cup of tea. So when she burst through the door with a skydiving license in one hand and her resignation from the office in the other, no one was truly surprised. Eventually, Marlo invested the money she saved and bought herself a space in Devinstone. Her oldest brother had moved there a few years prior and Marlo wanted to be around him and his husband, as well as be a good aunt to their kids. And as much as she missed the mountains, she knew there was no place amongst the mountaineers for her. The new city was the change she needed and a chance to find a new pace in her life.
Her job as an instructor is the thing that keeps her going. The rush each time she steps out of the plane and the way she can share it with other people is a joy to her. She had always craved the adrenaline and this is her greatest outlet. Sheâs been with the company ever since she moved to Devinstone, commuting to Boston each day, but a few months back she took on a second part-time job as an Indoor Climbing Instructor, a job that wasnât as good as the real deal - but good enough. Together, the pay is better than great and she enjoys her work since it keeps her on her toes. However, no matter how hard she keeps up the facade, the survivorâs guilt will creep up on her and Marlo truly canât wipe the faces of the people she had lost that day.
