How a single character inspired me as an artist
If someone were to ask me what in the media inspired me, I would answer with Deadpool. The films, the comic books, you name it. I know you're probably thinking, "wow, how original," but let me explain.
It all started when I went to see the Wolverine Origins movie. Yes, I know it was one of the lesser Marvel movies made, and I am not defending that. However, I loved Ryan Reynolds' as Deadpool… well, up until the end, but that's a discussion for a different day.
After seeing the film, I decided I wanted to research the character a little bit more. I loved his cocky attitude and snarky comments. I felt like Ryan Reynolds brought that out so well and was curious to see if that translated to the comic books. I found out there was a current issue of comics featuring the character and decided to start reading it.
I loved it; I loved the art style, the writing, and the character in general. It was completely different from what I expected of a comic book. To be honest, I hadn't really explored comic books because I didn't realize they could be like that.
The Deadpool series inspired me to get into character design, concept art and start writing my own comics. I began practicing drawing humans more. Before, I had stuck primarily to drawing animals. When the series ended, I was devastated, and I wasn't as big of a fan of the art style in the new series, so I had a difficult time getting into it.
Then there was great news, the news that Ryan Reynolds was going to make the Deadpool movie. There had been rumors about it, but a test footage leak confirmed that it might actually be happening. It's a bit of a blur between the leak and the movie release, but I remember being so excited when I saw the official previews.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, in the span of reading the comics, I definitely bought a custom costume and wore it to Comicpalooza. So, you better believe I was wearing that at the premiere.
The movie was great. What's even better is that the movie worked, and they went on to make a second film. Which was unsurprisingly just as good. I'm eager to see if they make a third film or if Deadpool will be featured in the Marvel Universe in any other way.
Now, I must admit, I have kind of moved away from my Deadpool phase, but I still give the character, movies, and comic books credit for what inspired me as an artist. It wasn't just drawing either. I remember that being the first time I said, I want to work on movies, I want to work for Marvel Studios. Ok, so that was a little ambitious, and I have since realized that. Still, in many ways, it changed my direction.
I still read comic books, however, I have gravitated more to webtoons. I have been exploring creations made by newer and unknown artists. I have even created my own series and have been working towards publishing it on webtoons. I would have to say that without Deadpool, I don't think I would be making comic book art, and I am not even sure that I would be in the digital media field.
