I know this is an old post but I wanted to add my story to this. A week ago today, my older sister who has been verbally and emotionally abusing my entire family for years, attacked both me and my mom. I am 18 and she is 21, but I am bigger and stronger than her, so when she has hit me into the past, it hasn't been a big deal in my family because she can't do much damage to me. I mean, it's been a big deal for me mentally because it's always traumatic, but it gets brushed off a lot because my parents have bigger problems and I've been treated as an adult for years.
However, last week she took it too far and she bit my arm very hard. The bruise has not healed yet and I am afraid that she did permanent damage to my muscle. Also, the reason I even intervened even though she and I weren't arguing, she was screaming at my mom, was because I head my mom yell "don't grab me". I was in my room sleeping (it was 7 in the morning and it's summer break) when I heard this and I don't know the extent to which my sister hurt my mom, but I ran out and put myself between them. Then my sister hit my chin and bit my arm.
This last week, I've been dealing with the aftermath of this all alone. My sister decided that we are the abusers, and that she was moving out, so for two nights after the incident, she stayed at her friend's house. Then, my parents let her come back into our house knowing that she was mentally unstable and dangerous, so I left and stayed with a friend. The past week has been on and off sleeping arrangements because my parents are continuing to let her stay in our home and I can't look at her face without remembering the crazed look she has before she attacked me. I've been have flashbacks on the incident and nightmares about my sister since, all of which my parents don't know about because they haven't asked. They haven't checked up on me since the incident.
My parents are not abusive, but I do think they fall into the "too weak to properly deal with abusive behavior" category that was mentioned in the original post. This past week, when they tell me that my sister is sleeping at home, I've mentioned a few times that I don't feel safe with her around, but it is never given any importance. I even mustered up enough balls to tell them that I feel like collateral damage because they are prioritizing her comfort over mine.
I love my parents. When it is just the three of us, we are a near perfect family. I talk to them about nearly everything, and we have family dinner every weekend. But I've always felt like they are more like my friends and not my parents, because they have never protected me from her. I don't entirely blame them because she is almost impossible to help, they've tried to get her medicated or in therapy consistently but she never complies. I don't think they are capable of protecting me like how I want so I think it's unfair to be too harsh in them in this situation.
This is a horribly long rant so I apologize but I just needed to get this off of my chest. This isn't even the full story unfortunately.
