Jan 30: “The Key of Blue”
My friend Kit (with whom I love to sing) called me last night. She had been at a grocery store, heard “Song Sung Blue” by Neil Diamond and thought of me. She challenged me to write my “Song Sung Blue”. What I ended up with was closer to Gram Parsons and 80s Country Pop. But I’m happy with this sweet song.
Jan 29: “Rice In My Toes”
One of my favorite human beings Roman Pietrs came over with his toys and we used all of them (Eno Synth with vocoder, flute and mandolin-like guitar). Look out James Murphy and all you Krautrockers, we’re coming for you.
Jan 28: “Dr. Healgood, MD”.
Susan Maris and I wrote this. We had a title, “When You’re Right, You’re Right” but that probably would have lead to a fight (song lyric in there somewhere).

I have so many amazing friends who live in the great state of California. I miss them very much.

I won’t get into today’s process because WHO LIKES TO HEAR HOW THE SAUSAGE IS MADE? I will say that this is ten times more interesting and evocative than what I was going to originally record. A difficult birth but I’ll take the baby.

Jan 18: “Starstruck”
Not the most dynamic song but there’s a dreamy quality about it I like. Had I more time, I would have threw in one more hook. Definitely owes a tip of the hat to Fountains of Wayne.
I was most starstruck by Brad Pitt. I saw him at a bar with tons of celebs in LA in 1997. I didn’t know how to talk or to whom. He was probably the most handsome man I had ever seen.
Jan 17: “Smile Bigger”
My high school chum Greg Smith suggested “You Should Smile Bigger” but I truncated it. Sorry and you’re welcome, Greg!
I hear stories about women being told to smile. “You look prettier when you smile.” I’d be upset if some stranger told me that too.
A male friend of mine was sitting at the bar. He had his usual expression on his face. The bartender asked him what was wrong. He said nothing was bothering him. She said he looked sad. He wasn’t said, he said. She tried to convince him otherwise.
As Americans, we over-value happiness. It seems to be our greatest export.
Jan 16: “Jazz Club In The Sky”
This is the third collab with my incredibly talented roommate Adam Cohen. We have fun! You sit down with this dude, run through a song and he remembers all the chords! He needs not write them down unlike yours truly. What a brain.

Jan 15: “Patience of Job”
I have my Fridays off and since I have more time, the songwriting process gets interesting. I get more ambitious. This can be wonderful. This can also work against me. I’ve been successful working quickly in the mornings. When I stretch out, the potential to lose the magic increases.
Nonetheless, there are many things that I like within the song. It has a J.J. Cale vibe. A few quick edits brightened up a bridge I wrestled for nearly an hour.
Mixing this required the patience of Job. Yeesh. ENJOY!
