mellow nodded and looked sad and kept crying, on occasion, but accepted the blankets and pillows and drank the hot chocolate when it showed up on the table next to the couch in the bright yellow mug that mellow loved. marsh had some, too, in the mug shaped like a crab. when the crab was empty, marsh slipped out of the room, and then slipped back in, with slippers, and put them on mellow’s feet without a word. when both mugs were empty, marsh took mellow’s hand.
marsh woke to the alarm as usual. though sleep was scarce, so ‘usual’ was usually too strong a word. recently, however, it had become a more common occurrence, so the term was more accurate than ever before.
so the start to the day wasn’t unordinary. mellow was gone, having snuck out early in the morning – not only a part of the usual routine, but a permanence which was vital to their very existence, and a constant in daily life. mellow had work at the coffee shop.
i'm just one of those people who's going to end up filled with regrets and inexplicably alone

closed off = mysterious; complicated = intriguing; independent = strong; but sometimes i wonder if i’m too ambiguous to love

i suppose that i know, that i knew from the start, the reason your cheeks grew damp. your quivering lips left the air wanting for words and still it filled with sorrow to shatter. but air is stronger than you know, as she always said: out of sight, out of mind but it rushes, fills your lungs, infiltrates your bloodstream, and swiftly enters your heart; try preventing it by willpower alone and you find only failure and more air. i suppose that i know, that i knew from the start, that she finally, accidentally, found that once-in-a-lifetime success. she was old, she was sick, she had achieved her goal, never complaining of its difficulties, raising her daughter’s child to be strong than air; you will not shatter and reduce her to failure.

on bad days, i’ll only wake up to your laugh, which you must know, because you laugh every time. not at me, or with me, but around me, a laugh to encompass, compelling the return of an indirect hug. i don’t return, because on bad days, i need more than a compulsion to move, i need more i than persuasion, i need more than a laugh, i need– there it is. there you are. warm hands surf my hair, a mess that i allow no one else to touch, whispered words in my ears, lilting reassurances, butterfly kisses on my cheeks; everything soft, serenely safe, and all-accepting. on bad days, you know better than to just wake me up; you lift me up, and give me what i need: all of you.

well, every once in a while, i caught myself doubting i caught myself spinning out of control towards the doors of doubt and self-destruction by internal, invisible, combustion. and every time without fail a hand reached out and i never once doubted that it was there to lift me up because I’ve never had reason to believe otherwise. well, with you it was different. the doubting, the spinning, no one ever taught you how it felt to be caught so catching yourself was out of the question. and yet it was expected, because every time a hand reached out, you were taught to doubt, and every time you trusted, instead of being caught, you were pushed down.

the most beautiful, dangerous, disastrous things are almost always kept hidden
mellow. the nuance beneath my skin
the moon is the source of lunacy. i told you as much, once; you didn’t believe me. moonlit hours are of utmost calm, you said. what about insomnia? i thought, what about night madness itself - what else could cause it but the moon? it’s too restless to grow out of darkness alone. but i shrugged, and said: i only meant that it’s the origin of the word. i thought the conversation had met its end, but one night you brought it up again: you took my hand and led us both outside, walked us to the field nearby, which was empty - it normally is, at three am, and most other times - you sat us both on a blanket you brought, told me to wait, and i did. and then there were crickets instead of silence and starlight replaced the dark, and your light - your voice, your words, or something - replaced my madness, and i realized that you were right. and the moon was somehow grounding, lunacy be damned.

wake up now, a whisper, but i groan, i grumble, i moan; i can’t smile just because it’s you. this morning is different, we've changed, and i panic, i wanted it all to stay the same, but now- now you laugh. it's okay. it's okay, you remind me. it's okay: just a pause. just a bad day.
