I do apologize for the numerous amount of gifs I put in my posts but it’s my favorite way of representing my emotions. Again spoilers
This has been the worst month of my goddamn life. No joke and then the last shot I got hit with is the ending of episode 9. They said fuck the cannon ending story of TT written by Atwood. Like????
Yes they did kill off our fucking Joey.
And you know what’s crazy. It was anticlimactic. Like that’s how you just end the fuckinh thing. Like you committed to this storyline then COMMIT. SMH.
I honestly wish I could talk more about it but there’s really nothing to talk about. This betrayal went nowhere. For what?! nothing. We didn’t see the villain they tried to make Nick nor did they try to redeem him.
It’s been a hell of ride Osblainers. I wish all our future ships will end better. I loved reading everyone’s thoughts in this community and being able to read great fanfics. This ship is the reason why I got Tumbler in the first place too. What am i supposed to do now?!? Well I wish everyone the best while we all deal with this.
You know why June and Nick were always endgame (before the show forgot this) and June and Luke never were?
Reason # 472.
On the bridge in 4x03, the only time they both say “I love you” at the same time, June says it first: “I love you.” And then Nick says it back: “I love you.”
See what’s missing from this exchange?
It’s the “too.”
Nick doesn’t love her “too.” He just loves her. Fullstop. No notes. Not tacking onto her statement, just saying it as an entirely new phrase, a separate experience to being loved by her. His love is unconditional, and this is one of so many moments that prove that to me.
The power of “I love you” & “I love you” with no “too” is so potent I could drown in it.
Meanwhile, Luke always uses the clarifier, the “too.”
Why is THT/TT people playing in my face. I have seen a spolier that Hannah possibly has a love interest who is a guardian and smokes when he shouldn’t?
Seems pretty similar to a couple I remember…
Like I wanted Nick and June but the writers said no that’s wrong
I have been rewatching a lot of ghost adventures lately and it just makes me laugh that Aaron is the Murr of GA. Like why are my favorites always getting the worst of it 😭.
Jokers: Murr your punishment it shoot someone
Zak: Aaron go alone in the basement and fight Satan
OK. So, I'll start by saying that I'm not generally a fan of Del Toro's work, which isn't to say I don't see any merit in any of it, I usually just end up respecting it for what it is, as opposed to actually enjoying it, like I really did not connect with The Shape of Water, for instance, but I understood why people did. I didn't dislike Pan's Labyrinth but I wasn't in a hurry to rewatch it and I haven't seen it since I'd first seen it. So I was surprised that I did actually enjoy Frankenstein.
Like all of Del Toro's films, I thought it was a visual spectacle, and usually I like movies that are beautiful/breathtaking/aesthetically pleasing but still feel like they're rooted in real places as opposed to watching movie magic if that makes any sense and I find that it's the latter "movie magic", like Del Toro's vibe is more "this is art, this is artifice, this is spectacle" in his movies
but it worked for me here
the visuals were almost ... lush
Del Toro really knows how to frame a woman in a billowing gown
Like, this is such a gorgeous sequence
I really liked Oscar Isaac's performance, that man is extremely charismatic and he managed to be that, to be someone who carried the movie for so long with his presence, with his energy, with his hint of humour while also being a pretty despicable character, like he thrived in being a Gothic character
plus he was pretty hot in this movie, like slutty hot
and I thought Jacob Elordi was great as The Creature (or Adam), at not simply being innocent but also being gentle and curious and graceful
and anguished and accessing the rage that comes from those places and that comes from despair
I actually ended up watching Priscilla after this because I wanted to make this comment but felt like I needed to see something else he was in because the only other things I'd seen him in were Saltburn and Euphoria but, me and anons have been kind of discussing what doesn't work for us when it comes to Chalamet on my blog recently, and after seeing this plus Priscilla and even Saltburn, I don't think Elordi is, like, an AMAZING actor, I do think though (and I'm not sure if I can qualify it right now) that he actually is what people try to convince me Chalamet is? Anyway.
Mia Goth was also really good, she had a very self-possessed performance while also indicating that Elizabeth has a rich inner life and she expresses her love for the Creature/Adam quite vividly
she does so much with her expressions
Christoph Waltz is always great, he's Christoph Waltz.
I also think this is how you do an adaptation, you take the spirit of the original source and make it your own. You interpret it, you adapt it while staying true to it. That is what makes for a successful adaptation.
Now, I know when I'm watching a Del Toro movie, it's always going to skew heavily towards "the monster", there's always going to be at least an emotional romance with the monster, the narrative will always reveal that the monster is not in fact the monster, humans are the monster and that's what happened here and I'm totally fine with that and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Elizabeth and the Creature, I thought the narrative did a good job in indicating why she would see his humanity, both with visual cues and with dialogue and why she would be so taken with him, why she would actually see him as a godly creature or the purest of God's creatures,
I'm all for that.
Did I think Victor was a bit one-dimensional and kind of cartoonishly evil? Yes. Do I think that the movie still could've been what it was while benefiting from leaning a bit more into Frankenstein being more tragic than mad scientist and it being more horror than rage and frustration at the fact that he didn't think about what would happen, what kind of life he would create once he created it? Yes. Like, I do believe that Del Toro attempts to nuance him a bit by spending so much time on his childhood, which iirc isn't like this in the book, but in the movie, he has a distant and abusive father and he in turn becomes a distant and abusive father and becomes the man he hated -- it is heavily implied that his father let his mother who Victor loved more than anything die giving birth to his brother, which causes his frenetic pursuit to cheat death and in the end, he accidentally kills Elizabeth who he "loves" or at the very least who he desires, trying to destroy his own creation, like there is tragedy and poetry in his storyline, I just think it gets pushed to the side with choices like him lying about the Creature murdering Harlander and then lying about him attacking Elizabeth, it just becomes a bit of a caricature and that was my major complaint about the movie.
A couple years ago, I started working on a big project to edit together all the Osblaine scenes, Nick scenes, and any moments where it’s conceivable that June was thinking about Nick throughout the entire Handmaid’s Tale show.
The file above is everything from seasons 1-5. I started working on season 6, episode by episode, but stopped after episode 6 for obvious reasons… I may return to it and finish the whole thing for the sake of completism, and I was also working on cleaning up a few transitions to make the audio smoother. But for now, here’s my link to everything through 5x10.
I hope this helps anyone who is considering rewatching the show to have an option not to give Hulu any more views from our fandom. ♥️
omg Serena held June down while her husband raped her at nine months pregnant and she gets redemption and nick who just killed 2 people to save June's husband and best friends a mere 5 episodes ago dies a villain
this is the worst story telling I've ever seen
Yep! Serena’s an attractive white woman, so she’s of course given a pass for her countless crimes against other women…
I saw someone try to use the defense that Serena never got anyone killed, unlike Nick. Looks like we’ve all just forgotten about Offred 1 (Serena herself forgot her, too - “I had a Handmaid once” - ONCE)… oh and we’ve also forgotten about, like, literally the entire foundation of Gilead resting on Serena’s shoulders…?? Hasn’t killed anyone, lmao.
I know some aren’t planning to watch it so take this with a grain of salt as it’s just one person’s opinion. Overall, I do think it was a good call for me to watch the episode for a sense of closure, but I get it if some might be too frustrated to watch it at all at this point.
-first of all, to those who were in denial, the plane absolutely blew up and lawrence and nick are dead dead. Sorry…
-the time jump was a bit confusing but makes sense narratively
-within the first 5 minutes there’s a flashback montage of June remembering Nick and his moments of loving her, but that seems to be the extent of her remorse or sadness for the rest of the show (no tears in sight from her but definitely from me!)
-after this montage she mentions in a voiceover, “God always requires a sacrifice” and remembers Lawrence with his hand over his heart.
-Luke has gone full Mayday and honestly good for him. He was never my favorite character but I respect this growth and I’m glad he’s able to finally do something and feel good about it considering he always seemed so disappointed by how little he could do in Canada. (Him and June don’t end up together by the way)
-Janine is apparently missing, but Tuello works on finding her.
-Tuello mentions Mckenzie has been promoted and hannah has moved with them to DC.
-we get some Tuello backstory! He mentions he has a son who lives with his ex-wife in Hawaii. “When I close my eyes, I see them. And I get back to work.” 😭
-There are a couple of flashbacks of June with Hannah at the carnival. Not hugely significant, but relate to the overall message that she will never give up on finding her.
-June talks with Serena and this scene was rough for me… June praises Serena saying none of it (taking back Boston) would have happened without her. Serena responds, “I have become death, destroyer of worlds. Guess I’ve helped boston fall twice now.” (She’s really not beating those god complex allegations anytime soon.) Serena then says she’s very sorry about Nick (“may his memory be a comfort and a blessing to you always”) to which June responds, “Nick reaped what he sowed. He lead a violent and dishonest life, so..” (seriously june?🤮) And serena responds again, “you know if he ever thought he had a real choice, he would’ve chosen you.” I’m having a hard time reading June’s reaction to that line? The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one here I think.
-Serena is then put on a bus to a refugee camp. She’s stressed about not having a passport or having a safe place to go. Tuello plans to get her a passport and says “I’ll find you.” To which Serena seems happy and smiley. (How dare they get the ambiguous and hopeful ending?!?!!!)
-Serena tearfully says goodbye to June saying she’s ashamed and sorry for what she did. And June tells her she forgives her….. I know they’ve been foreshadowing this for a while but dang it’s frustrating to watch HER of all people get the forgiveness, but she couldn’t extend an ounce of that to Nick??
-EMILY IS BACK!!!! That was a very beautiful moment. She had been working out of Bridgeport as a Martha and working with the resistance. And was still in contact with Sylvia and Oliver (facetiming him on his birthday💗). Emily and June walk along the wall and there’s a beautiful shot of the wall all graffitied with women’s names.
-THE KARAOKE SCENE😭😭 it was absolute perfection!!! I was dying to have something like this in the finale. Janine, June, Emily, Moira, Rita, ALMA, AND BRIANA sing and dance together to Landslide (one of my favorite songs too🥲). It’s clearly meant to be a daydream scene since Janine has both eyes haha but still so so so beautiful!!! (If you watch nothing but that scene, I recommend it highly)
-They found Janine and she gets returned to the Americans. (June is there) Naomi returns Charlotte to Janine 😭 (another very tearful moment for me). June says to Aunt Lydia “blessed is the woman who does not walk in stride with the wicked” as their farewell.
-Holly sr and Holly jr fly in from Alaska with other Americans. There’s a sweet scene of the three of them hugging.
-June has a moment cuddling Holly jr where she says she has a job to save the other little girls in Gilead and she has to leave Holly jr with her grandma so she can go off for Hannah.
-June has a moment with her mom at the boston globe wall where they talk about her going off to fight and leaving Holly jr behind. June says that her mom is the one who taught her to fight and Holly sr encourages her to write a book so her daughters can know her story. From Holly sr: “This is the story for people who may never find their babies, the people who will never ever give up trying. This is the story for them.”
-Luke and June also have a moment to say goodbye. He’s moving on with Mayday to keep fighting. June says she underestimated him. June tells him she’s going with Mark to keep looking for Hannah and they’ll meet up after. (June and moira don’t say goodbye this episode but Luke implies that Moira is going with Mayday too.) Luke also tells her to write her escape story and says that “you had people who helped you like Janine, and Emily, and Lawrence, … and Nick. People who loved you. People who you loved. They’re all worth remembering.”
-Serena’s final moment is rough for me again. She’s in a refugee camp hugging Noah and saying that he is her “most precious gift from god.” Going on and on about how much she prayed to have a child and how he’s all she needs. It’s beautifully acted by Yvonne, BUT, the message I take from this is that Serena thinks it’s all worth it. All of Gilead, all the horrors she wrote into law and inflicted on people were worth it because she got a son. Ugh I hate that she of all people gets this beautiful ending with no real reckoning for what she has done to people. She gets to join the refugees and be just like the rest of them.
-In the final scene, June revisits the burned down waterford house and climbs up to her old room. (The choice to put her in a teal coat is a strange one imo…). She ends the series by pulling out a tape recorder and starts telling her story. I appreciated the nod to the historical notes in the book.
Lmk what you thought of the episode! I’m so ready to move on from this show lol.
No matter how you feel about Nick Blaine, that ending made absolutely no sense from a narrative or character arc perspective. Not to mention the fact they're completely changing The Testaments series to erase both Nick and Nicole/Daisy.
This. Should've. Happened. Sooner. And why are you "idealizing" and "romanticizing" him anyway? For what reason would you be doing this? No, you changed what you wanted to do in the final season to be shocking.
If Nick was always That Guy then we should've seen him do shit with the Eyes that went beyond rounding up commanders. We should've seen or have a hint of that the Martha a part of Mayday and who warns him about falling for June, play him as some sort of double agent. Why are the Marthas meeting him in season 4 so he can ask them about June? Would they not know that he's actually That Guy?
No, you can't have it both ways. It can't be All Men Are Bad In Gilead. Nick Was Always A Villain. He's A Nazi. He Was A Part Of The Gestapo. You Should've Seen This Coming. And also, but his and June's love was this amazing thing and he really does love Holly, and June will tell Holly about Nick and how her parents loved each other and loved her So Much. Why would you tell your daughter this if her father was a fucking Nazi? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE.
