“Perhaps. Lots of things don’t seem as destructive when you factor in I used to be the Behemoth.” Heath countered, a quick, wicked smile flitting across his face. The mischief left him a moment later.
“If you are Jesus, am I Judas?” Heath asked, voice hanging low in the darkness. He watched Josh readjust, a spider watching the fly. “Am I to kiss you with betrayal and the foreshadow of death?” But then again, death had always been foreshadowed in Josh’s life. Heath’s blue eyes swirled. “Would you kiss me still, Josh? If I were to betray you with a kiss and you knew? Would you still kiss me and court your death?”
Josh seemed nervous, something Heath inwardly fed off. However, despite his nervousness, Josh appeared to be forcing himself to meet Heath’s face. He didn’t seem to want to look away and for that, Heath was almost appreciative. He preferred people who looked unholy, ugly things in their faces and if there was one thing Heath was - even if it wasn’t physical - it was an unholy, ugly thing. Besides, there was something that drew them together. Perhaps it was what Josh said next, his fingers touching Heath’s face.
No, neither of them were going to prison. Only Josh seemed to feel the bitterness that Heath had. The fact that neither of them mattered in the long run, a cog in the machine of reincarnation. They could die one moment and be replaced by their new self a moment later. They truly didn’t matter. Talia didn’t seem to understand but Josh did.
“I’ll scorn Heaven and Hell.” Heath scowled, face pulling taut. “Neither of them work for me. Raziel or Lucifer? Spare me.”
The words hung in the air — If you are Jesus, am I Judas? — and Josh found he really didn’t want to answer. So he stared, mismatched eyes sparkling in the dim light. But Heath kept talking, and wasn’t he good at that? Always throwing pretty words out into the open and seeing how they were met; playing with golden words like an apple of discord.
Josh’s throat clenched, making swallowing difficult, but he did so before he forced out a whisper of a response; soft and gentle and so undeserving to Heath with the things he’d done ( and Josh knew it, he just chose to ignore it ), “Yes.”
He paused. He caught his bottom lip between his teeth, dragging teeth across the skin.
“I would. But does saying that mean anything when I know I’m going to die young anyway?” Josh kept his stare on Heath’s eyes, the blue mesmerizing, almost like he was begging Heath to give him some respite; begging Heath to stop him from having to confront his mortality and his ultimate insignificance in the universe as an individual. “Death isn’t something I’m scared of.” His fingers tapped twice on Heath’s cheek. “I know I’m going to die for something, and that it’s going to mean both something and nothing at the same time.”
At Heath’s scowl, Josh’s eyes flicked away. He retracted his hand. “I agree with you there, Heath,” he said, voice low and grumbling, but not a whisper anymore, “But right now we have now.” He pressed closer to Heath, eyes focused back on him, and he pressed a gentle kiss to Heath’s mouth; almost hesitant, almost like he was worried about how it would be received even though he’d done it many times before. “Please just let me have now. I’ll…,” he trailed off, throat tightening to the point of feeling like he was choking, “I’ll be dying soon, I’m sure, so please just let me have you now.”
