There should be desks in hospital waiting rooms

My eyes are on Marx;

My ears are on the door.

I pretend I'm in a classroom.

It's almost like a classroom.

Uncomfortable chairs sit in rows,

Seating people who probably would rather be anywhere else.

A book is balanced on my knees

As I do the work that the class has been set.

My book should be on a desk.

I should be in a classroom.

My book falls from my lap as I finish my sentence.

I wrote this poem whilst sitting in the waiting room of a hospital, waiting for my 24hr ECG appointment. The appointment meant I had to miss my A level sociology class write in the run up to the exams.

I felt like shit because my health was getting in the way of my education and I felt like a coward for letting it, even though I couldn't help it and the tests did result in me getting my POTS diagnosis.

Anyone writing, well, anything:

Finish it. Publish it.

Whatever you're working on, someone's gonna love it. They'll stand up and defend it or hold it in their secret heart, a cherished forever favorite.

But only if you finish it.

Novels are real writing.

Short stories are real writing.

Nonfiction is real writing.

Poetry is real writing.

Fanfic is real writing.

Blog posts are real writing.

Prompting a clanker to make up words for you is not writing.

genuine writers getting wrongly accused of using ai because of witch hunt and proper grammar/structure in their works must be what being a woman in the 1600s who is wrongly accused of being a witch because she can read and is intelligent feels like

this and also the only difference between fanfic writers and writers who sell their own original works as careers is that fanfics aren’t monetized. that’s all.

being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.

whether or not a piece of writing is monetized has nothing to do with its quality.
